Daily Dose of BS Oct 3 4 years and a day

Yesterday was my 4 year anniversary for getting laid off.  With that being said, I am happy to be where I am.  On Monday I was finally able to close the door on the feeling I was festering for the past four years.  I finally forgave and let the feelings of anger go.  I am in a much better place for me.  Thank you for all my friends who stood by me and were there for me when I needed to talk, and thanks for La Crosse Radio for taking a chance on me.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 2 no labels

Not sure if this is possible or even probable but to me it makes sense. Why not take away the labels? I know there are die hard Democrats and die hard Republicans, why not take the names away and vote on the person and what they believe in? This way we are voting in the best person, not the person having the label we like the best? It is so funny to me that we are all quick to jump down someone's throat for labeling someone different than us something, but here we are labeling each other and labeling our politics. I have voted for people from each party, I vote more for the way I feel a person will govern our great country, rather than a label that was thrust upon that politician. SO if we throw away the parties and let the politicians wear their colors on their sleeves I am guessing that we could all reach across the political aisle and be friends with and agree with each other more. I am also guessing that there are lots of people who agree with a thing or two about what this that or the other politician believe but are afraid to look because of the label.

BS SIGNS YOU HIRED THE WRONG BABYSITTER ON THE WEEKEND:

-Asked for payment in advance in order to put a deposit on a keg.

-Carried the baby by sinking her teeth into the scruff of its neck.

-As you were leaving, asked if you happen to know the country code for Australia.

-Had her boyfriend move hidden ‘nanny cam’ to your nightstand to better capture the show

-Offered to throw in a circumcision for an extra 10 bucks.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 1 government shut down

The start of the month and the government has shut down. This is real great on our already struggling economy. Who is to blame? Who is going to be impacted the most? I am mad that this has had to happen, why play politics with peoples livelihood? We will all most likely feel the effects, from food safety and health to work safety. A few years ago in Minnesota they had a government shutdown while we were traveling and the beautiful state parks were all closed with today's shut down all national parks, and the Smithsonian Museums, are closed . Talk about a disappointment. Talking about disappointments we will still have to pay our taxes.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 30 oktoberfest

Oktoberfest in La Crosse, what a wonderful time of the year. It is fun until someone gets an eye poked out or car tipped over. What the hell? Why is it that people have to over consume so much that they feel it is ok to tip over a car, or do some other act of destruction? I had a job in Iowa when I first started in radio and one of my buddies tried talking me into cow tipping, after visiting a farm, I realized that this was an impossible task. I watched in amazement this weekend as many not only college aged students over indulged but as many of my peers did as well. In carpooling to get kids from this parade spot to the other and back home again, I noticed so many killing brain cells. I am not saying that I have never done this because I have, but I have never been part of a mob scene that ruined someone elses fun or property. I hope that the La Crosse Police finds, and then makes an example of these idiots, also that it these are students who are attending one of the higher education facilities in La Crosse, that the school also comes down on them. If you do the crime, you should be held responsible for the punishment.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 27 oktoberfest

The day you have been waiting for since last October is finally here. The tapping of the golden keg. I have been enjoying Oktoberfest for the past 21 years and there is a lot to enjoy. I moved here right after the beer throwing ended, I am glad for that because I couldn’t see wasting that much beer. Over one hundred thousand people line the streets of La Crosse for Mapleleaf Parade. It is the great La Crosse Get Together. What is your favorite part of fest? This year I am looking forward to hanging out with friends on Monday night for the Bret Michaels concert. Also remember when someone this weekend says ei ei ei o to you respond with Old Mcdonald has a farm.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 26 Christmas before Halloween

It is not even Halloween and already we are seeing signs of Christmas. What the heck? I am wondering why we are seeing this holiday creep into our sights earlier and earlier each year? Last week Kmart started with Christmas and other stores are following. A few years ago we went from bah humbug I am not saying Merry Christmas to anyone because of the fear of upsetting someone to now already displaying Christmas in September. I don’t understand what was the cause of the change? Are we seeing God sneak into our lives? Oh no what will we do? Are the people who hate Christmas going to not shop at these stores or is it a conspiracy for all of us to be so unsensitized to Christmas and everything to do with Christmas that we start to not pay attention to it? If you know please explain cause I am at a loss. Ho Ho Ho happy Oktoberfest.

A butter dance to Adele

One of the weirdest things I have seen.
A butter dance?????what the heck?

Butter dance

Daily Dose of BS Sept 25 sex

Sex sells. Not the act but the promise of being sexy. Why else would a chainsaw company put out a girly calendar, or would commercials use pretty people. There was an uproar a month ago about little Hannah Montana going over board. Guess what there is nothing real about Hannah Montana, she is Miley Cyrus and she wants to sell records. I get it, be absurd or controversial you will get people to talk about you. Be over the top people will remember you. Remember that guy who liked peanut butter and nanna sandwiches? What about those long hair rockers from Liverpool from the 60’s? They both pushed the buttons with what? Sex. For one gyrating hips, the others long hair and being different. Pushing the buttons and the norms of the time. For Miley Cyrus and the next generation of pop keep pushing. For the rest of us when it is over the top stop looking or reacting, it will go away once there is no waves or anyone talking about it.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 24 saving money

When it comes to saving money. Where do you save it? Are you a coupon shopper, do you wait until what you are looking for is on sale, are you a second hand shopper? Do you hit up the dollar store, or reuse bread bags? It is funny to see the different ways that people save money. I have watched the extreme coupon shows on Netflix and thought there is no way I would do that. I do however clip coupons, from the grocery store deals that are in the Sunday paper to the flyers that are also there. I have not printed off too many coupons off the internet. I was grocery shopping the other day and got stuck behind an extreme couponer and they saved about 50% of their bill. I still don’t think that they needed a case of air fresheners, who will ever even use that many? Dollar stores can save you money and so can shopping clubs but you have to watch what you buy. Do you think it is better to buy an inexpensive something and replace it every year or spend more and replace less often?

Daily Dose of BS Sept 23 stealing food

I think there are people scamming the system. There is no way that everyone who is on food stamps needs them. I heard on the radio last week that one in seven Americans are on food stamps, I have a hard time believing that everyone who is receiving this benefit is in need of it . If you need food stamps, great you should get them, but if you are scamming the system, shame on you. I am bugged that people get in the system and then work under the table so that way they do not need to get out of the system. We are in a world of financial hurt as a country and people lying, and cheating and stealing from the government are adding to this problem. When I say there are people lying, cheating and stealing from the government, I am not only talking about food stamp fraud but now other frauds as well, shame on the businesses who charge governmental agencies more than they charge other businesses. Remember when you are scamming and cheating the government you are stealing from all of us including your Mom.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 20 running

No land speed records were set. Not a one. I work with Lois and she was telling me how she ran for a mile and a half without stopping. I am proud of her, this is my goal this year. I had the goal of doing two pull ups by the time my 25th class reunion, that didn’t happen, not for lack of trying. I then had the brilliant idea of learning to jog, a big guy running cue the evil laugh. I did a couch to 5k last year, and I tell you what I was as close to a couch you could get. I was winded just walking and the thought of a 5k, wow don’t get me started on what went through my mind for that. Well I did it and did a few 5ks last year more walk than run but they were finished. I had the goal in 2013 to run a mile and a half without stopping, well having Lois do it earlier this week is pushing me toward my goal, Yesterday at Anytime Fitness I ran .7 miles without stopping, and like I said no land speed records were in harm of falling, I am a step closer to my goal this year of going a mile and a half without stopping.

Would you eat this?

Gross? Kinda makes me wanna puke a bit.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 19 cookies

When I say cookies lots of you will think of the things that are attached to our computers that make our computer do and think things, right? I love cookies and not the kind that I just explained but a Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie that is made with real butter and is a little crispy. I really dislike when someone makes chocolate chip cookie bars, they just don’t taste the same. And don’t try messing with the toll house recipe. I am also a fan of monster cookies and m&m cookies, but not the fake m&m cookies that are out there, why bother when it comes to the fake ones. It’s funny when I started writing this I was just going to talk about cookies I now feel compelled to also let you know I also like the edge piece and corner piece of brownies and I am a fan of ice cream. And you wondered why I am so sweet.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 18 garbage

We all make garbage. At my house it seems like we end up with more throw away than we do anything else. It is amazing that when you go to make a meal you end up with more stuff for the landfill than you do on the table, why is this? My big concern is that the city is now going to dictate how much trash I can generate at my household. I have six that live under my roof and I am going to get the same garbage container as my neighbor who has herself and no one else. I don’t get it. Also we are going to be required to sort our garbage a bit better than we are used to, like save our plastics number 1-7 what about 8 and above, they aren’t good enough? Also if the recycling is offsetting the cost of the bins, what about the pickers who are going through your trash taking out the metal for scrap and the aluminum cans to recycle on their own.

Daily Dose of BS September 17 save our Library

Come on LaCrosse...We have lots of bars and new ones opening every year. We have 3 libraries in town, the Main, the North Side and the South Side branch, and you want to close the South Side library? Really? To save 160,000 dollars a year? I bought my house in that neighborhood because of that library. I am not sure what you are thinking. You close that library and you wreck the neighborhood. I will start looking for a new house, I bet others do as well. There are people in and out of that building everyday. Libraries are used differently now than when I was a kid, now the library is as a meeting place, a place to take a class, a safe sanctuary, a quiet place to escape the daily grind, a place to live and a place to learn. Oh yea you can get questions answered there, go online, read a book, a magazine or a newspaper, you can learn a new skill, or be read to. Do not close our library, if you are looking for a budget to cut, look else where.

Daily Dose of BS September 16 new car smell

WTH?  When did cars become as expensive as my first house?  We are looking at a new to us car and I can not believe it.  We are looking for something that will move all six of us from here to there and back again, but not a mini-van.  Not sure why we need something new but, that is another story.  When it comes to buying a new or used vehicle what are some of the things I should keep in mind?  I am not a car guy, really I know how to put in gas, check the oil, and put air in my tires, that is it.  I am not sure that all the bells and whistles are needed, I would like power windows, air conditioning and cruise control and a radio that gets am.  I would like to get good gas mileage and want it in my budget, any ideas what to look for?  Any ideas on where to go?  Anything I should steer clear of?

Daily Dose of BS Sept 13 you are not always right

I hate to say it you are not always right. I know it is hard to hear but you can be wrong sometime. I also have to admit that I am not always right. I think that we feel as we get older that it is our why or the highway, and guess what that is not the fact. We can be wrong, deal with it. I post here on facebook just about every weekday that I am working, and I read every single comment that someone posts to my writings. I really do appreciate every single one of them, even the ones that I don't agree with, before yesterday have never edited or took off any comment that anyone has made, on or about my posts, because it is a free country and we have freedom of speech. However a few of the comments yesterday were mean, with name calling and finger pointing, I took those off. I write my Daily Dose each morning as a journal of what I am thinking of for the moment and I put these up to create a vehicle for thought, and always enjoy a bit of feedback, but life is too damn short for us to name call, and bully.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 12 health screening

I had a health assessment today.  I had to fast for 12 hours before I did it, they draw blood, they take your blood pressure and ask you some questions.  I am assuming that after the Affordable Health Care act goes into effect I will no longer have to do this.  When I set it up I asked for the earliest time they had, they said the nurses were there as early as 5am I said sold.  Otherwise I would have to do my show without coffee, and that wouldn’t be good for anyone.    It is good to talk with other morning people.  Most the time I am up early I am at work, fishing or hunting and when fishing and hunting most of my friends are not morning people, so talking with someone this morning other than the grunt of a buddy or a mumble from a family member, it was welcome.  If you are a morning person and like to talk early, I suggest calling a morning talk show, like mine (608) 782-2554.  Talk to you on the radio.

Daily Dose of BS September 11

Today marks the 12th anniversary of an emotional day for many of us as Americans, I recall being on the air and having someone call and say a plane flew into the World Trade Center. The studio had a black and white tv so we turned it on, it was a punch to the gut,  shock and awe was the feeling, here a turning point in American history was playing out live on TV.  I recall picking up my son from school and trying to figure out how to talk to him about what had just happened.  I can still picture the images of the planes hitting the world trade centers over and over again.  I had just been in Boston two weeks prior and thinking and saying out loud that there is no security here.  The days, weeks, and even months after this tragedy we as Americans pulled together.  We flew our flags high, we said hello to our neighbors and held the door for others around us, we were actually polite to each other.  Why does it take a kick in the pants to have this happen, we pulled together again after the Boston Marathon too.  Why can't we just like and respect our neighbors all the time, Instead of after- life- altering events?

twerk fail....fake

Daily Dose of BS Sept 10 death

When the end is near it is hard for all loved ones.  I don’t know if you can ever plan for that day when you don’t have that someone there be it a spouse, a child, a parent, a grandparent, a friend, a boyfriend or a girlfriend.  We all have to deal with loss at some point in our lives.  It is different to see different people deal with loss in their own ways.  How do you deal with the loss of a loved one’s life?  When the end is near for a loved one how do you cope?  What do you say?  How do you comfort?

Daily Dose of BS Sept 9

Should we go to war with Syria? Congress reconvenes today and will be voting whether or not to have a military strike on Syria. US Secretary of State John Kerry now says there is the support of at least ten countries on taking "limited" military action, my biggest question is what is limited military action? Don’t we fight to win? I don’t think that any people of the world should have to be in fear of poison gas attacks like those that happed in Damascus at the end of August. But I also don’t know at what level of assistance we as a country should offer, don’t other people in the world hate us because we jump in the middle of things?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 30 country going to pot

Yesterday was a special day.  I am blessed to have as many friends as I do, thanks to all who made my birthday special.  I woke this morning to a story that made me feel as though I was still asleep, the Justice Department said yesterday that states can let people use marijuana, allow people to grow it and even allow states to allow adults to buy it as long as its kept away from kids.  I am not sure how I feel about this.  Marijuana is considered the gateway drug personally I think of tobacco as the gateway drug, but that is a whole other story.  I think that legalizing pot will bring some of the drug dealers down and bring in millions of tax dollars to the government, and any tax cut would be welcome.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 28 smoking

Tomorrow will be 6 years since I smoked a cigarette.  I had been a smoker on and off from the time I was in high school till 6 years ago, I quit for 4 and 5 years in there at different times but 6 years ago I decided after my oldest son caught me smoking to give it up for a year.  I gave it to myself for my birthday, it was a one year contract that I had with myself.  I then continued to give myself that gift.  That time I quit was easy, as I was doing it for my kids and for me.  Don’t get me wrong there were times when I really wanted to light up, especially when faced with stress, but each day it got a bit easier and the cravings less.  Which brings me to the e-cigarettes that are now seemly everywhere, is that just trading one habit for another habit?  Are the people who are “smoking” these doing good for themselves?  I have a friend who used them for awhile to try to quit, it didn’t work he smoked both the e and regular cigarette now just the regular.  I am now hearing that these are causing cancer similar to regular cigarettes.  I am also bugged by the fact that users of these feel like they can do it anywhere, like the grocery store.

THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS BEFORE SCHOOL BEGINS

Summers winding down, time to prep your kid for another school year. A few tip:

Start adjusting bedtime before school starts.

Set your morning routine.

Go see your new classroom or school.

Make playdates with classmates.

Make school shopping special.

Fill out school forms ahead of time.

Create a homework workspace.

Organize closets with back-to-school clothes.

Do something fun school starts soon.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 27 parade

Would you pay 35 bucks to reserve a prime parade viewing spot?  The city of La Crosse is considering a new and different approach to the squatting problem along the Mapleleaf Parade route.  Up to 55 prime parade watching spots could be available for “rent” for the parade.   The city is thinking of issuing $35 street privilege permits to keep people off the streets till the parade starts.  I think this is ridiculous, isn’t this just another tax?  My goodness we already have hoops to jump through in order to watch the parade from a prime spot by having someone stake out the area starting at midnight, now we have to pay for the “privilege” of doing it, no thank you.  Unless this is how they are going to let the parade go on without fees to Oktoberfest.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 26 rape

She deserved it, do you see what she is wearing.  She is asking for it, I’ve heard the stories.  I got needs.  I’m a man.  She flirted with me I could tell she wanted it.  She didn’t say stop, I heard don’t stop.  Her friends said she likes me.  You can’t rape the willing.  Come on MAN UP.  It makes me sick that a sexual assault happens every 2 minutes in this country.  Every two minutes.  We are the land of the free, the home of the brave.  I see nothing brave about forcing yourself on to someone.  Remember NO means NO.   It is about respect and not just for your partner but for yourself as well.  Here’s the thing 54% of all sexual assaults go unreported, if we want to see that number change, start reporting.  I am a Dad, a Son, a Husband and a friend to many women and I do not want to see this go on.  Let’s put a stop to sexual violence.

WHO EATS THE MOST FAST FOOD?

Some surprising highlights of a new Gallup poll on the topic

80% of us eat some type of fast food monthly almost 50% weekly.

57% of young adults aged 18-to-29 indulge weekly, the highest frequency of any age group.

51% who earn $75,000-plus annually are more likely to eat fast food weekly, in comparison to just 39% who earn less than $20,000 a year.

Only 4% of us claim to NEVER eat at fast-food restaurants....I am not one of them.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 23 forget

There are times that I am in the middle of conversation and forget what I am talking about.  Sometimes I think is there a better way to get somewhere that I go to regularly, there are times that I am thinking of a number between 1 and 10 and when I am asked what the number is I lie because I don’t remember.  But then there are times that my memory is so good that I remember things that haven’t even happened.  I am not sure if these are the signs of old age or because there are always 37 things going through my head at a time.  Sometimes it is so crowed up there that the less important things get pushed out or taken to the slower part of the brain.  Most days at work I give the weather forecast 20 times in a day and then someone will ask me after work what is the weather going to be tomorrow and I give them a blank stare and ask why would I know, the response is always don’t forget the milk.

Daily Dose of BS August 22 ahh um

Today I got nothing.  I am surprised by this as there is always something swimming around in my head.  I was thinking on my way into work this morning about how many times we say um in a day.  I am guessing if you work at Subway you hear it more than the average person.  Try to order a custom made sandwich or a built for you burrito from a made to order place without saying the word um.  I bet ya can't do it.  I tried the last time I ordered and was unable to do it and I mentioned it out loud to the person working, they laughed and said they didn’t notice.  I bet they do now.  I had the chance to meet President Bill Clinton right after the Monica story broke, he spoke in La Crosse and about 15 of us got to meet him and ask questions, being me I asked how do you speak without saying ahh, or um?  He looked me right in the eye and with my best Bill Clinton impersonation said ahh, um…

Daily Dose of BS August 21 speed limit

We all are in a hurry, if you are driving through Wisconsin, slow down.  Most the states around here have a higher than us speed limit, and I hope ours increases soon.   I remember when the slogans arrive alive drive 55 was out, and then we moved it up to 60 and 65.  While driving to visit my folks in the Twin Cities you get to drive legally 70, but if you go only 70 you will be passed.  The state of Wisconsin is now looking at moving the speed limit up to 70 from 65, I personally think we should move it to 75 or even 80, people are driving it anyway, and why not have a little truth in signage?

BS TRUTHS ABOUT KIDS

If you have trouble getting your kids attention, just sit down and look comfortable.
One child is often not enough, but 2 children can be far too many.
Summer vacation is a time when parents realize that teachers are grossly underpaid.
There are 3 ways to get things done - do it yourself, hire someone to do it, and forbid your kids to do it.
A child will not spill on a dirty floor.
The best thing to spend on your children is time.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 20 bored killing

Heard on the radio this morning that three teens shot and killed someone cause they were bored.  Where did the respect for life go?  We killed him because we were bored.  The boys were aged 15, 16 and 17.  I am appalled by this and I think the biggest reason is that there is total disregard for life, secondly I have kids that are close in age to those kids.  How can you be bored?  There are so many things to do from reading a book, to hiking in the woods, to hanging around the mall or playing games, either video or good old fashioned board games.  I do not get the mentality of people who for no reason cause damage to someone else’s stuff, steal from others or take the most precious gift of all life.  Here is an idea if you are bored find something to do.

Daily Dose of BS August 19 marriage

My buddy got married on Saturday and most of our card/hunting group was there, I got into a conversation with one of my buddies on why marriages now a days seem to end more often in divorce, great topic at a wedding right.  He gave me his thoughts on the reason, and for me it makes sense.   We are now waiting to be married and we live together before we are hitched, in waiting we are getting more set in our ways becoming more independent than we were in the past.  We are forgetting about compromise that makes any relationship work, lets say you are an over the top toilet paper person and your spouse is not, bam a fight, you roll your tooth paste from the bottom and he squeezes it from the middle bam a fight.  No compromise.  This works at work also, the people you fight with at work or in other relationships are people who won't compromise with you but one of you ends up backing down and a good foundation of relationship can't be built on that, can it?

BS BALD GUY PICKUP LINES

You’re beautiful, and that’s not just the Rogaine talking.
I will shower you with gifts with the money I save not buying shampoo.
Would you like to run your fingers through my head?
Your eyes are sparkling … or maybe that’s just the glare off my head.
I don’t have any paper, but you can write your phone number on my extensive forehead.
Wanna go back to my place and see my hairpiece?
There are 2 things missing from my life: Healthy follicle growth and you.
Wanna buff me?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 16 don't judge me

I am a big guy, I know that people look at me and think, lazy.  I think that we as a society tend to judge people on their outward appearance.  I don’t know if I am judgmental or if I just am noticing things and either like or don’t like based on what it is that I see.  Yesterday I spent the day at the Wisconsin Dells and you could not have asked for a better day.  I made many observations and want to share a couple of them, first of all why would you go to a water park dressed up in your Goth stuff, (A) it’s a water park you are going to get sun and (B) it’s a water park and you’re going to get wet.  If you are wearing pants over your underpants, why if you are allowing your whole underwear to show, I saw no less than three young men wearing their pants so low, with a belt mind you that they had to walk doing the splits to keep the pants up.  I guess I am glad that under garments were worn.  There were belly button rings, and pierced chests, and I saw lots of cool ink, some really bad ink and a fake tramp stamp that ran.  I guess when you boil it all down it is your canvas to do what you want, but there are lots of artists out there that even their Mom won't hang the art on the fridge.

Daily Dose of BS August 14 computer crapped out

What a craptastic start to the day.  I started off my morning routine then headed to the office to go through emails and check my facebook.  Went to turn on my desktop computer and nothing, the display said primary master drive error hit control, alt and delete.  It went through that twice, then came to the display of reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media.  Well the quick look through the drawer of computer stuff, I found some 5 inch floppys and 3.5 inch floppys some windows 98 and xp start up discs, guess what no windows 7 Asus start up discs.  Uggh what do I do, my business is run from that computer, I have tons of pictures, audio, and memories on that computer.  In fact thinking about it I am starting to get antsy and irritable, any help would be appreciated.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 13 open package

You would think that as a business you would want consumers to try and enjoy your products.  We bought some of the snack packs of the oatmeal squares to go, and they were definitely to go.  Go back to the kitchen to get a scissors to cut the thing open.  It is a nice looking snack pack that stands up by itself, the top of the pack says push down and pull apart, I don’t know what Herculean person can open this package by pushing down and pulling apart but it should be an Olympic sport that is how difficult this task is.  Which brings me to other quick grab and go snacks from chips to bagged lettuce and carrots who designed these tear here strips and what is the success rate?  One in 1,456?

Daily Dose off BS Aug 12 messy desk

We have all heard that cleanliness, after all, is next to godliness.  Boy was I in trouble before researchers at the University of Minnesota decided to take a look at this, you know keep your work area clean and you will be more likely to work your tail off, stay honest, be generous with your coworkers, and on and on.  They found that all the clutter may be part of the reason that we are so creative, so lets grab a coffee stained mug filled with your favorite caffeine and toast the slob next to you.  Remember the old saying "If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"  it seems as though a messy work environment, can bring out a person's creativity and lead to the birth of bold, new ideas, this new research makes me happy.  Now if I could only find my stained coffee mug to make that toast.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 9 vacation

I get 3 weeks’ vacation a year, and I get a handful of holidays a year but then we as a company take a day in the summer and take a family trip, this year we are going to the Dells, and it truly is a family trip, not only am I invited to go but my immediate family as well, they supply the bus and the tickets.  Pretty cool huh?  As Americans we are on the low end of vacation when it comes to the industrial countries no wonder there is burn out.  Here are some signs that you need a vacation, that you are driving your family nuts with all your complaints, that your industry is dying, that you feel as though you don’t fit in, and that you would rather go get a root canal than go to work.  We need to use our vacation instead of loose it, take a day every once in a while to either sleep in, stay up late, go to breakfast or just sit around in your jammys.  If ya got the vacation use it don’t loose it.

Daily Dose of BS August 8 lessons learned

Life is short, and is filled with rules and lessons.  We never stop learning and we often forget those lessons.  For example remember the big rage a few years ago about the lessons learned in kindergarten?  I think with each step in life we have a take-a-way.  For example in kindergarten we learn to share, and not fight.  Good life long advice.  In middle school we learned that we must be able to march to the beat of a different drummer, to take what is given and make the best of it.  High school we learned how to fake it till we make it and act like we belong, and this is great advice that will continue to help us well into our future.  In our first jobs we learn that Mom does not work there and isn’t there to pick up after you and also that it is ok to ask for help.  In dating and relationships we learn that in-fact the world does not revolve around you.  Lessons everywhere, how we choose to learn and implement make us who we are.  One of the biggest things I learned in radio is to listen.  What are the best lessons learned in your line of work?

BS METHODS FOR SHORTENING CHILDREN’S BOOKS

Reading to your child is one of life’s greatest gifts, right? But sometimes you are just … too … tired (or have read your child’s favorite book a hundred times) and wish you could turn that 36-page story into a 12-page story. Here’s how …The 2-Page Turn – Children are extremely susceptible to sleight-of-hand. Make use of it! While pointing to a picture on the left page, grasp 2 (or more) upcoming pages to flip over.  Word Skipping  – About half of the words in kids’ books are modifiers. Skipping needless terms like ‘very’, ‘quickly’, and ‘super’ will get you out in a little over half your usual time.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 7 tongue cleaning

Yesterday was national fresh breath day.  Did you celebrate?  I know I didn’t.  I did my typical daily brushing of the teeth, I think I even flossed, but I am like most people and don’t floss as much as a I should.  I read the other day that people who use mouth wash on a regular basis that they tend to lie more often than those who don’t use it.  I wonder if it is because it offers them a chance to share their breath more cause of the fresh minty smell and they feel as though they have to talk and share the minty goodness.   Since I missed national fresh breath day yesterday I just wanted to know if you have ever scraped your tongue.  I  never have but I brush it a few times a week.  According to some it is like someone who doesn’t clean a shag rug.  My question is who still has a shag rug?

Daily Dose of BS August 6 beer

20 years ago beer was the most popular alcoholic beverage by far, since then beer is down.   I know I personally drink less beer than I used to but I blame that on getting older and having to get up at before the crack of dawn.  I also am more aware of the damage that drinking can do to you, your family and those around you.  I used to make the claim that I could close a bar and be up and at work at 5, and I would do it on occasion.  Those days sucked and I have no idea what possessed me to make that choice, oh yea, because I could.  When the national media is saying that beer consumption is down, and other alcohols are up, I wonder if it has to do with marketing and the disappearance of beer bars.

Daily Dose of BS August 5 trip

I talk for a living and if you meet me in person you will know that I talk pretty much all the time, even in my sleep.  I was on an extended weekend trip last Friday and Saturday making a trip to the Twin Cities, with stops at the Mall of America and the Minnesota Zoo.  At the MOA we did the aquarium there it is called Sea Life and believe me I was whistling the song while walking thru the aquarium, if you like having an up close and personal experience with sea urchins and starfish and have a shark and sting ray float over you then the is a great place for you to visit.  The next day the zoo, always fun and took one of the last trips on the monorail, they are closing it after Labor Day.  Getting back to me talking, we were enjoying the managers reception on Friday night at the hotel we started to talk with the family next to us, they we’re just wrapping up their 3 weeks’ vacation that brought them all over the West Coast and back thru Minnesota to fly home to DC, vacation without a plan, that to me sounds like fun.  Would you be able to do it?  Plus we met some people from La Crosse staying at the hotel.

Daily Dose of BS July 30 tv

Old school tvs.  I remember when I was a kid and the tv broke.  My Dad called a tv repairman and he came to our house to fix the tv.  I even bought a tv that didn’t work when I was a kid at a rummage sale.  It cost me 7 dollars to fix it.  I remember that cause it was a $7.50 tv.  It needed a cord, it was black and white it didn’t have a remote and you had to turn the channels by hand.  Remember grabbing ahold of the knob and seeing if you could turn the channels all the way around with out letting go of it.  There was uhf and vhf and no cable….at least where I grew up in the twin cities.  (I think that is just what my parents told us so that way we didn’t have to get it…a whole other story that is.)  We had the networks abc, cbs, nbc and pbs….nothing more nothing less.  I think I like tv today as we graduated from vcrs and dvds to tivos and internet tv.  Where are we going to go from here?  Tv that beams to our phones?  Nevermind it is already here.

Daily Dose of BS August 1 poverty

I read a news story the other day that shocked me it said  “Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives”.  I call BS unless the poor are hiding somewhere, I believe that we have a problem but 4 out of five, that works out to 80% or about as many dentists recommend chewing Trident.  When I look around at my fellow man, I see iphones, lap tops, big screen tvs, restaurants with patrons,  people to spending money.  I just don’t get how this report can say 4 out of 5 struggle, if they were to be honest, maybe just a handful of people don’t struggle with money, but I am guessing that much of the struggle is brought on by bad choices or poor spending habits.

Daily Dose of BS July 31 guilty

GUILTY. That is the verdict of Jeffery Lepsch, the Minnesota man accused killing Paul and A.J. Petras at May’s Photo last fall.  The La Crosse Police did a quick and fast job of finding, and then charging him.  I was shocked when I heard what the killing was over, 17 thousand dollars’ worth of camera equipment.  Really a couple of lives are worth only 17 grand.   The 12 peers from La Crosse, the jury, found Lepsch guilty.

Daily Dose of BS July 29 bail and guns

Should we as a country bail out Detroit?  Most of us have issues with money, so should the country take on the burden of helping out our fellow countrymen and women?   I am not sure how I feel about this, on one hand I wonder if there is truly anything we as outsiders can do to help this struggling community, if what we do as a country will really be a long term helping hand or will it be a hand out?  But on the other hand I feel bad for those in the situation that have no choice, like the kids.  I also heard that the city of Chicago wants to take the guns from those that aren’t supposed to have guns like those that are mentally ill or have felony records; I guess that I thought that this is something that is always done.  Guess what it isn’t.

Daily Dose of BS July 26 phones

At work this morning the phones didn’t work.  I see I have a voice mail, I couldn’t retrieve it.  Then the phones turned on and crackly then it worked for a while then I got hung up on.  It is weird I really never thought about how much I use the hard wired phone for my job.  I guess that since I take calls on the air and make calls to different people to interview them a phone is needed.  Hard to think that with all the cell phone and internet technology that is out there that the wire in the wall and the phone on the desk still has meaning.  I remember as a kid taking a super long phone cord and running a phone up to my room, then when I first moved on my own having a phone in a couple of rooms.  Now at home when the home phone rings it doesn’t get answered half the time because no one can find one of the cordless phones, or they are not convenient.  Are you still wired?

Daily Dose of BS July 25 cell phone

July is “Cellphone Courtesy Month”  What phone etiquette faux pas really ticks you off?  Some of the things that tick me off about cell phones, when people talk loudly on the phone in a public place or texting while dining with someone in a restaurant or my favorite taking calls while in a serious conversation, or make that any conversation.  Enough of  the bad etiquette, lets all work together to make it a successful rest of the month, after all its less than a week, and if we do it day by day we will eventually make a dent in rude cell phone etiquette.

Daily Dose of BS July 24 breakfast

I guess I do something right, I heard a report yesterday that it is true breakfast is the most important meal of the day and as a man it is even more important.   Men who regularly skip breakfast are at 27 percent higher risk of suffering a heart attack or fatal heart disease, they go on to say a bunch of other stuff about it too but I tuned it out and started hunting for something to have for my breakfast.  I think Homer Simpson said it best, mmm donuts.  I am guessing this isn’t the kind of breakfast that the study was talking about.

Daily Dose of BS July 23 a bit of a bunch

1490 that is the amount of gnats flying around my deck, does anyone know how to get rid of the dang things?  I also got many things running thru my head today as I usually do.   I am trying to teach my kids not to lie, yet here we have a major league player, one who many look up to getting suspended for doping, cheating and lying.  When someone that kids look up to, or anyone dopes, cheats and lies to better themselves for the game there is a problem.  I have always found if I do something wrong and am called on the carpet for it, if you come clean the wrath may be swift but is less then when you lie about it.  Also does anyone else besides me not give a royal rip about the royal birth?  There are women all over the world giving birth everyday, and many of these kids I bet end up making more of an impact in the future than a royal birth.  I guess I better keep my mouth shut about this or I may ingest another gnat I think I am up to 105 so for this summer.

Daily Dose of BS July 22 bad motel stay

I believe that things happen for a reason.  Think of most of the things that have happened in your life and look at the eventual outcome.  I think that things happen for a reason.  On my vacation that I just got back from I needed a room and I needed it quick so I booked a hotel room on a travel website, boy was the family disappointed.  It started when the cottage that we were staying in couldn’t accommodate us for a 3rd night, they worked to find us a room and couldn’t get one for us.  We found one a few towns away it was the only room left in town according to the site.  We took it, it had the stench of smoke, a few cigarette burns on one of the bed spreads and an air conditioner that was plugged into one of the brown non grounded extension cords, an a dirty towel hanging on the back of the bathroom door.  We thought we could overlook all of the above since we were doing outdoor things we would just stay outside until it was time for bed, we did, we hiked and fished and had great family time.  Got back to the room and my daughter moved a pillow on the bed and a bug scurried away.  I took the key to the inn keeper and asked for my money back, he refused.  We left anyway.  Worst motel experience I have ever had.  We ended up staying in Hayward that night over an hour away from where we started, still a great vacation.

Daily Dose of BS July 16 Wisconsin Vacation

We all work hard, well some of you do. I am not sure I put myself into that category; you see I love what I do every day so for me it isn’t work. The job that pays me offers me 21 paid days off a year, 3 weeks to do what I want, and I sometimes have a hard time taking all those days. I am not sure why, the years creep up quickly and with that being said, the vacation days keep accumulating. I took a day off last week to enjoy Rock on the River in Prairie du Chien and will be taking some more days off to enjoy a Wisconsin vacation. This year going to Madeline Island for a couple of days, then later heading to Milwaukee for a Brewers game and a trip to the Zoo. Already hit up my favorite place in the whole world the family cabin in the Town of Freeman Wisconsin and looking forward to many more nights there this year, and also just hit up the Dells. Where is your favorite vacation spot? Come to think of it, it isn’t too hard to burn through those days when you live in God’s Country.

BS PLACES WE’LL LIKELY WIND UP GOING THIS SUMMER VACATION

• Wrong turn through unexpected suburban neighborhoods.
• Overnight accommodations in enclosed space near screaming baby.
• The visitor center of broken exhibits serving 0 million visitors a year.
• Breathtakingly cold water in locals-only municipal swimming pool.
• Historic B&B with peeling paint and … is that cat pee? It’s definitely cat pee.
• Staycation in living room, nestled between eatery (kitchen) and spa (bathroom) with all the comforts of home.
• High school reunion featuring wine coolers and vengeful payback.
• Some national monument with more stairs than a stair factory.
• Immersive, authentic experience in depressing town you left at age 18.
• The We-Paid-a-Lot-of-Money-So-Quit-Crying Amusement Park.

Daily Dose of BS July 15 stuff

Does the not guilty verdict surprise you?  I am not sure it surprises me.   There were many calls for peaceful activism, after the George Zimmerman verdict was read.  I heard of a few disturbances of rocks and batteries being tossed at police and crowds, but lots of other peaceful protests.  Elsewhere in the news over the weekend one of the stars from Glee was found dead in his hotel, apparently from a drug overdose.  I have never seen the show, but it is always sad to see another person overdosing.  We have a drug problem all over our country including small towns, and it is a scary that drugs are so prevalent and easy to get.

Daily Dose of BS July 11

George Zimmerman is not going to testify.  I for one would like to hear his side of the story.  His attorney felt that he had already told it in multiple interviews played to the jurors.  I wonder if they are suppressing his testimony so that way they can set up the trial as a mistrial?

Daily Dose July 10 food

Has your favorite food changed?  I know that my favorites have changed size, things used to be in a much bigger size, now with packaging things that once were a half gallon are now 1.75 gallons.  The family sized bag of chips used to be large and would feed a family now it is a smaller bag, plus the taste isn’t as good.  Next week brings back the Twinkie I wonder how that will change and will it still be a stoners favorite food?

Daily Dose of BS July 5 no talk

Is technology going to be the death of conversation?  I don’t know about you but I have not answered a phone because of who was calling, I checked the caller idea and didn’t feel like talking to whomever was calling.  I am guessing that I have been on the receiving end of that as well.  In fact I have seen someone who I was calling look at their phone see it was me then didn’t answer it.  I tried calling my mom and dad and brothers yesterday to wish them a happy independence day and got voice mail from each of them, I got two return calls.  I guess I made it to the Schmidt list from the other Schmidts as well.

Daily Dose of BS July 9 stupid questions

There are lots of stupid questions out there, I have asked my share but being in talk radio you have to fill time.  There are tons of dumb questions asked every day and one of the most annoying to me is “Is it hot enough for you?”  Um do you see me sweating just standing here?  If it is too hot and uncomfortable for you here is an idea use your brain and think before asking.  I was always under the assumption that there is no such thing as a stupid question but we all have been wrong on that one right?   I always love the one when you answer the phone….oh are you home?

BS TIPS FOR BEATING THE HEAT:

• Replace the pads on your Beats By Dre Headphones with frozen hamburger patties.
• Chill a couple of used tea bags; hold one under each arm.
• Enter a wet T-shirt contest … in a wind tunnel.
• Go to a morgue and ask if you can sleep in one of the drawers.
• Drain your air conditioner and make a refreshing frozen smoothie.
• Crawl back under that rock you came from.
• 2 parts hydrogen + 1 part oxygen = delicious homemade water.
• Take a piece of cardboard and wave it in front of your face.

Daily Dose of BS July 8 earworms

Ever had that song or jingle roll through your head at the moment you are ready to sleep, talk to someone,  close a sale or just about any other activity?  There has been the same 5 or 6 songs going through my head  over the past few days, and it changes with whatever the situation is.  I don’t know why but that Taylor Swift song we are never ever getting back together keeps rolling through my head at the weirdest times, its weird cause I think that is the only part of the song that I know and its like on a loop.  UGGH stop the madness.  These types of songs are called earworms, According to Wikipedia an earworm is a catchy piece of music that continually repeats through a person's mind after it is no longer playing.  What are some of the songs that are the earworms for you? These types of songs are enough to give you heartburn, I know a relief, plop plop fizz fizz oh what a relief it is.

Daily Dose of BS July 3 flat beds

Do you save receipts?  I usually do for a couple of weeks or till I use the item a few times.  I bought an intex brand blowup mattress, from a local merchant about 3 months ago and have used it 2 to 4 times. Then tossed the receipt, weird because you wouldn’t think of saving the receipt for something like that, at least I don’t.  I am disappointed in the life cycle in these blow up beds, it should work more than 4 or 5 nights.  I would think if you are spending about 50 dollars for a blow up extra mattress that it would last at least ten times.  I did toss the receipt after a few nights sleep on it but am not happy with the quickness that the bed flattens.  Is there a good quality blowup mattress out there that will last more than a few nights?  Also what do you suggest I do?

Daily Dose of BS July 2 as American as

As American as baseball, Cracker Jacks and apple pie.  The 4th of July is a day to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  The document that gave us freedom and equality by declaring that all men are created equal, well equality if you were like everyone that signed it, I think we have a long way to go for total equality.  But we are striving for it as a nation I believe.  I heard a story on the news this morning that Jeep is the number one brand name that pops into the heads of many Americans as patriotic, weird since it is owned by Fait.  I am guessing that on the 4th of July we will be washing down our brats and burgers with an ice cold Budweiser, owned by IN-Bev a Belgium brewing company.  Which brings us back to Cracker Jacks, they still as far as I know owned by an American company.

Daily Dose of BS July 1 words

Today marks a year since we switched WLFN to Today’s Talk 1490, thanks for giving us a shot.   I was playing cards with my buddies the other day and we were discussing words that people say since the bottom fell out of the Paula Deen empire over the past couple of weeks.  I am guessing that every person out there have said words that they are not proud of over the course of a life, especially if you throw in words said either in jest, or in the privacy of their own homes or in private conversations.  I always remember my Mom telling me to watch what I said as words can hurt but also to brush off those words that sting as the old nursery rhyme goes “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me.”   The do sting a bit though don’t they.

Daily Dose of BS June 28 jobs

If you don’t have the job that you want why not look?  I know I have brought up jobs and job search here before, but why work a job you hate?  We all have only so many breaths on this earth, so why be miserable?  I lucked out and have the best job for me.  I couldn’t imagine being shackled to a desk or have the noose of a tie around my neck day in and day out.  But I am also happy driving a 1999 car with 346 thousand miles, so wearing shorts and flip flops to work works for me.

Daily Dose of BS June 27 food on a stick

Ever wonder why there is summer time blues?  Could it be the sun?  Could it be that we have daylight for the majority of the day or could it be that we eat crappy food.  I am guessing that it is the latter.  I have two kids in organized sports and that means either a baseball game or softball game every day of the week, and when they don’t play they have practice.  Practice times and games are often right after work and its either rush to the games or divide and concur to make sure that each kid has someone there and someone to give them a ride.  I was thinking this isn’t the only time that we grab and go with our foods, summer is also the time for state fairs and the food that state fairs bring.  A friend of mine Kim sent me the foods that are new to the Minnesota State fair.  What arte the weirdest foods you have heard of and what are the weirdest foods on a stick you have ever eaten?   I tried beer on a stick once, not impressed.

Daily Dose of BS June 26 pop drinker

I am a big drinker…of water.  I used to have a pop addiction and when I did I would consume 6-10 12 oz cans of pop a day.  I am glad I quit that habit, it is like any other habit, day at a time, I was lucky when I quit, I did just cold turkey.  The nice thing for me is that there was no cravings or other withdrawals and also what is nice is that I can enjoy an ice cold pop every once in a awhile with out the need to drink more.  When I drank pop I used to drink diet dew or diet coke, now I like a regular dew or a good root beer, make that most beer.  By the way have you ever had an unopened pop explode all over the inside of your car?  I have and for that I am glad I quit.

Daily Dose of BS June 25 wheres my money

Living the dream….paycheck to paycheck, about three-quarters of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, according to a new survey.  The survey also shows that about 50% had saved less than three-months worth of expenses and 27% have no savings at all.  Doing this we leave ourselves open, wide open for the blips in the road that life seems to throw our way like hikes in gas or food, this is pushing us more and more into debt.  To get out without winning the lottery, budget, make more money and save.  You can do it.

Daily Dose of BS June 24 weather

You know it’s funny the way we react to weather, we are never happy.  Last year we were wishing for rain, this year we were hoping for weather like last year, I really don’t think that there is any pleasing us.  When I first moved to La Crosse the saying that was always tossed my way was wait 15 minutes and the weather will change, I do not agree with that but the weather is ever changing and that is good.  I am glad that I live in an area where we do not have the vanilla forecasts day after day.  There are days that I wish we had 82 every day and 65 every night but guess what it would get boring fast, and if I really wanted that temperature day in and day out I would have to take my own advice and move.

Daily Dose of BS June 21 love your kids

I tell my kids I love them.  I do not have an issue with telling people that I care about these words.  Someone said to me yesterday that they like to hear when men say I love you to their kids.  I was raised with this being ok, also I hug my parents and tell them I love them as well.  I think it is weird when people don’t tell their loved ones this.  You do love them right?  Tell them.  If you didn’t or don’t hear it from your parents don’t you kind of wish you did or do hear it from them?  Take the first step and let them know your feelings it is 2013 after all.

Daily Dose of BS June 20 Haydens birthday

Happy birthday to my oldest son Hayden, it is hard to believe what changes have been taking place at the Schmidt house over the past 18 years.  Its funny when you become a parent for the first time, you have no idea what to do, you look at your own parents and use the things you thought worked and not use the things that didn’t like.  I remember when I was a kid myself and telling myself that I would never yell at my kids, I failed miserably with that goal, I hope that my children understand why it is that I yelled over the years.  No one hands you an owner’s manual that is a great way to raise your child, every kid is so different and every child has different things that motivates them.  I find it hard to believe that of my four children they are so different yet so much alike.  They say that as a parent you are a child’s first teacher, I would like to say that I have learned so much from my kids.  I am so proud of my children, especially Hayden my oldest, he has become a great young man and a man who I love and look forward to watching him blossom into his potential.  Happy Birthday Hayden, I love you.

Daily Dose of BS June 19 paying more

Sometimes don’t you feel like you’ve been a victim of bait and switch?  When you got your mobile phone, or your tv package and you were told that your monthly charge would be for ease of math 50 per month.  You think that is a great deal you sign the dotted line and the first bill arrives, that bill is over twice the expected rate, you call listen to some bs on how with this deal you have to prepay a month and you can't forget about taxes and other fees.  What happened to truth in pricing?  When I go put gas in my car I know that today I am paying 3.69 per gallon and if I put 50 dollars in my tank I will pay 50 dollars.  I may not like it but I know what I am paying.  I am not a fan of the change in the pricing or the bare bones billing scheme, tell me what my costs will be and let me budget for it so I will know if I can afford the luxuries or not.

Daily Dose of BS June 18 neighbors

Usually I like my neighbors, this morning not so much.  I was awakened with the crashing of the basketball against the hoop and the dribbling of the ball on the ground in between misses.  Couple that with the dog barking at the unexpected noise and you have a cranky Bob.  My neighbor kid got home about 1:56 this morning and started shooting hoops.  I just want to say thank you from the Schmidt family and the rest of the neighbors you woke up.  So 1:56am for me is maybe like 9:56am for him, but then again he is young and could probably sleep through anything.

Daily Dose of BS June 17 sunburn

We had a few nice days in a row, and I got a lot of sun.  I didn’t get burnt but I am guessing that lots did.  It seems when we have a few nice days in a row that we tend to forget about the sun being hot and ready to burn.  If you are a little red this morning don’t forget the aloe.  I had a buddy that swore by taking a few aspirin after too much exposure of the sun and you will wake up with no sunburn, I did try that a few times and it seemed to work for me, do you have any tricks for either keeping from peeling or for no sun burn pain?
