Daily Dose of BS Oct 23 staycation

We work hard and some play hard. As the seasons are changing I am reminded of the fun things to do in our own back yard. A staycation if you will. I love where I live and love to play here as well. From Ice Fishing to Rotary Lights, to Skiing at Mt La Crosse and cross country skiing at Hixon Forest, don’t forget about hiking and snowmobiling as well. We have State Parks within an hour of here and one of my favorite things to look at right across the river with the ice chunks that hang from the bluffs in La Crescent. So many things to do in our area and so little time. What is your favorite thing to do here?

Daily Dose of BS October 22 save money

So am I the only one who gets irritated when I open up a webpage to see a list of lets say 50 things and have each of those items as their own separate page? While researching this Daily Dose of BS I wanted to have a bunch of things to talk about for saving money. From the common like turning off the lights when you leave a room to “visualize the” why you are buying a product. And give yourself 10 seconds to decide if it is really something that you need. I think we are all good at buying products but are we good at using the stuff we buy? If you are like me you have a drawer full of stuff that you bought cause you thought you needed it and there it sits in the package until it either expires or the technology becomes obsolete. I am guessing that you have done that on more than one occasion. Another tip for saving money is to get rid of magazine subscriptions that you don’t keep up on. I used to have time to sit and read a handful of different magazines, now I don’t have the time and this is a good way to save about 100 bucks a year, it doesn’t sound like much but it is a good night out. Saving money on the products you buy doesn’t have to be hard. Just look around.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 21 soup

Making soup is different now than it was even a few years ago. I turned on my heat on Friday night the first time this year, my house was cold. I kind of do heat like I do the crock pot, I set it and forget it. I usually put the heat at 68 or 69 degrees and let it sit there. About 12 years ago we insulated the house, got new windows and got a new more efficient furnace. At the same time we cut our heating bills in half. Yesterday I was glad the heat was on, after spending the morning and afternoon putting in a garage door, I was cold. The kids wanted soup, since it was so cold I did as well. Back when I first started cooking it was open a can of campbells add water cook. I then learned how to cook, I made the broth, added the meat and veggies, it was a labor of love, and it showed. The soup was delicious. Fast forward to about 3 years ago when the dried soups came into vogue, now homemade taste is just a few minutes away. Last night I made the chicken wild rice soup mix but then I added leftover chicken, rice and veggies. You still can’t beat homemade soup but adding to the mix is better than canned.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 18 expired food

The other day while looking for something for lunch I spotted the container of potato salad. Mmm I love potato salad. How often is it when you spot that extra piece for lunch or a bit of leftover for dinner that you notice it is just past the due date? I was bummed that here was a brand new potato salad container that had not been opened yet and had a date that was 2 weeks old. I know that we toss more food at our house because it either expires because of date of because it has been opened. I am usually good at eating leftover in fact I often plan for them so I have something for lunch, but get disappointed when we have to waste food. Is my family the only family with the two week past the due date food? Some things I will push the date on, but others not so much.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 17 snuggle house

I’m a hugger. I enjoy a good hug. I also like to cuddle, there is a job out there in Madison for those of us that like to hug, cuddle, and snuggle. The Snuggle House in Madison offers professional cuddling and snuggling, officially opened its doors Tuesday. So what does it cost for a snuggle at the Snuggle House? Customers pay $60 for a single snuggle, $120 for a double-cuddle and $425 for an overnight session, and it is a snuggle house only, no funny business. Wait how can they say no funny business, I find it funny that someone pays to hug, cuddle and snuggle. I’ll hug ya for free.

ADDICTED TO OREOS? YOU MIGHT BE

Oreos are as addictive as cocaine, at least for lab rats, and just like us, they like the creamy center best. Researchers (at Connecticut College) found eating the sugary treats activates more neurons in the brain's "pleasure center" than drugs such as cocaine.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 16 flu shot

Today I am getting my flu shot. By the time that this is played on the radio for the first time, I will have got my flu shot. I have heard both sides of the story about why not to get the shot etc, but I work in the public and see lots of people and shake lots of hands, and I mean I do shake hands none of the fist bump BS. I also have kids and talk for a living so getting influenza is out of the question for me. Lots of people think if I get the flu shot will get the flu, or you won’t get stomachaches or headaches. Its not the case, you won’t get the flu, and you may still get head and stomachaches. The flu shot will help you from getting influenza which is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. It spreads easily and the Flu symptoms usually start quickly. The first symptom of the flu is a fever but can include: Body aches, Chills, Dry cough, Increased breathing symptoms and much more. I would get you the info from the CDC website but the government is shut down, and apparently passing on information is non-essential.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 15 texting and driving

Here we go again. Another reminder of people breaking the law. Heard a report that 80% of college students are texting and driving and about 50% of adults are also. I have to admit that I sometimes do too. I won’t for the most part but every once in a while I will speak to my text to talk to send off a quick message. I will also occasionally when at a stoplight glance at my phone to check what is going on. I have tried to put it away and not text, but sometimes the draw to know what is going on in the inner circle is too much the draw. I have a friend who traded in his semi smart phone for an old school phone to get rid of the temptation. You used to only see young people glancing down at their crotch and smiling but now you are seeing lots of people doing so, I even saw a senior citizen looking down and laughing the other day, but maybe they were happy it was just a fart.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 14 life

Who has time to listen to secret meanings on songs and listen to songs backwards? I have a hard enough time listening to some music forward let alone backward. Why is it that many look for something that isn’t there from life to music to satisfaction at home, work, school you name it. Life is too short to do the things you hate doing. I got some family news last week that puts life into perspective and you know something life is too short. We spend far too much time finding the bad in things, the stuff that we want to put up or dukes over, ready to throw down at any time. I think we should work for peace and work for unity instead of trying to tear down each other. We all have those friends that when you say up they say down. Why do we put up with this?

Daily Dose of BS Oct 11 I got nothing

I usually have a hundred things flying around in my head on a regular basis. Today, I got nothing. As a person who is in a creative line of work and usually observant is quietly stewing in a mass mush of nothing. I thought if I started to type that something will come to me but still I got nothing. If you have any ideas on what I could talk about today, please help, ideas are always welcome, my worry is what will I talk about on the radio and can I bs about nothing for an hour? If you would like to help, please call this morning 608-782-2554. Thank you.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 10 gas prices

Not quite 3 for 10. Gas prices are down a bit and the prices are a bit misrepresented, here is what I mean the price you see in red neon is 3.33 per gallon. What we are really paying is 3.339 per gallon or 10.017 dollars for ten gallons of gas. I know that many of the gas stations have the penny jar there, so you could sneak that extra .017 out of the price but simple math in my head tells me I get 3 gallons for 10 bucks. It is a sad day when I drive by my local gas station and see that price and think to myself look at that gas is cheap. When did I become that guy to think that 3.339 is a cheap price, it is not. I think at this point I would be happy with 4 gallons for 10 bucks or 2.499 per gallon...or cheaper.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 9 stop bullying

October is anti-bullying month. I think we have all experienced bullying in some form or another, what starts sometimes as good natured ribbing can turn into the worst experience to that point for a kid and can be a stressor for that child. We all give our siblings and our friends a hard time, but once in a while that hard time keeps up and the line gets crossed, that is when it is considered bullying, we picture the bully to be the hard ass kid from down the street, but in fact it can be anyone from a brother and sister, to your parents, to friends, family, teachers and bosses. Here is how to define bullying its Intentional- aggressive and a deliberate attempt to hurt another person, it is repeated- over time to the same person or group of people and there is a power imbalance- the person bullying has more physical or social power than the child or children being bullied. Lets stop the bullying.

Anti-Bullying Day October 9

I had a chance to talk with La Crescent student Max Merrill a few months ago, Max started his own clothing line he calls MeInfinity, which is meant to remind people to be who they are forever. Tomorrow is Anti-Bullying Day.  It reminded me of Max and what he has overcome.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 8 day 8

Is your job essential? I’m not sure mine is. In fact I know mine is not. I have few friends who are being affected because of the shut down. We are in day 8 right now and enough is enough. If the government truly wants to make a difference instead of a point have the whole government shutdown. I am guessing that that will not happen cause the man never goes without. Could you imagine the people in congress or the senate say no to a pay check? There may be a few out there who will as a gesture give it up but really? It isn’t affecting them anyway it is cutting to the core the backbone, the people who are in the trenches and are busting their hump for the man. Lets put politics aside and unite as a country and put these people back to work. The gesture is there we “shutdown” the government now lets show the world that America is open for business.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 7 nothing on tv

Bruce Springsteen had it right back in 1992 he sang about our unhappiness with life. Think about it his song 57 Channels and Nothing on, if you think about it, it could have multiple meanings from us being unhappy with our lives even though we have everything we could want. And our constant quest for more, and still not being happy. To the obvious choice of all the tv that is out there. I think it is odd that we keep getting more channels and more choices but none of them are getting better. We do have over 57 channels are are still struggling to find something to watch. I am thinking of pulling the plug on cable tv since we only have the basic 2-20 channels now no extra sports, no extra news, no movies, still too many channels of nothing on. Have you pulled the plug, and if so how did you survive the nagging from the kids?

Daily Dose of BS Oct 4 reduce reuse recycle

We have heard of reduce, recycle, reuse. I have been good about the repurposing of products, getting most of the supplies for finishing off the family cabin from places like the restore. I am a frugal man so the reuse comes easy but the reduce I have not been very successful at that, we still have at least a bag of garbage a day. I am going to have to learn how to reduce my garbage because of the new rules that go into effect at the first of the year. I have heard from friends who have moved here from other communities that this new system will be “awesome” I guess we will have to wait and see.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 3 4 years and a day

Yesterday was my 4 year anniversary for getting laid off.  With that being said, I am happy to be where I am.  On Monday I was finally able to close the door on the feeling I was festering for the past four years.  I finally forgave and let the feelings of anger go.  I am in a much better place for me.  Thank you for all my friends who stood by me and were there for me when I needed to talk, and thanks for La Crosse Radio for taking a chance on me.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 2 no labels

Not sure if this is possible or even probable but to me it makes sense. Why not take away the labels? I know there are die hard Democrats and die hard Republicans, why not take the names away and vote on the person and what they believe in? This way we are voting in the best person, not the person having the label we like the best? It is so funny to me that we are all quick to jump down someone's throat for labeling someone different than us something, but here we are labeling each other and labeling our politics. I have voted for people from each party, I vote more for the way I feel a person will govern our great country, rather than a label that was thrust upon that politician. SO if we throw away the parties and let the politicians wear their colors on their sleeves I am guessing that we could all reach across the political aisle and be friends with and agree with each other more. I am also guessing that there are lots of people who agree with a thing or two about what this that or the other politician believe but are afraid to look because of the label.
