Last time I was at the cell phone store I had to sign in and
show my I.D., even though I knew the guy working. Hard to believe but when buying a case of
beer a few weeks ago I had to show my I.D.
I got pulled over a couple of months ago, guess what, I had to show my
I.D. Check writing, which I don’t do
much of but still I.D., get on a plane, rent a car, a hotel room or a house,
you need an I.D. When I bought Sudafed I
needed an I.D. It is pretty clear to me
that you need an I.D. for just about everything you do, oh wait everything but
to vote, that changes this year in Wisconsin.
Do I think it is a bad idea?
No. Why would I? There are people who will complain that
showing an I.D. will stop certain people from voting, now personally I wouldn’t
want that but I did some research and you need to have a photo I.D. to apply
for food stamps, welfare and unemployment.
I am just saying that I would guess that most adults have an I.D. and if
they don’t there are programs out there that will help someone get one.

Daily Dose of BS Feb 5 waffle bowl
This coming Sunday is finally Waffle Bowl Sunday, it is also big game day, a national day of tv, wings, other high calorie tasty treats and lots of alcohol. My family however has a totally different menu when it comes to the big game, it started many, many years ago. At the Schmidt house we have a family tradition of waffles, and sausage on the day when football plays its big game. I remember the year we started it, it was right after reading the Sunday paper I glanced at a glossy newspaper ad that had a waffle maker on the front page, we went to the store and bought it, as a family we have been making waffles every single Waffle Bowl Sunday since. I love Waffle Bowl Sunday, because even if your team isn’t playing in the big game you can still waffle back and forth and enjoy the plays and of course the commercials. I even left a party a few years ago when the Green and Gold was in the waffle bowl to go home to have the breakfast of hotels with my family. Have a great Waffle Bowl Sunday no matter how you spend it and go team go.

Daily Dose of BS Feb 4 cultural sensitivity
Has cultural sensitivity gone too far? There is a school in St Paul that is kissing off
Valentine’s Day and other holidays as a way of being more culturally sensitive
and inclusive. Some of these schools
around the country are teaching our kids to not have any beliefs, how are we
going to raise this generation now if they cannot celebrate holidays, or other
beliefs, I know let’s have a culturally generic celebration 4 times a year,
spring, summer, winter and fall. But we
cannot call it anything because we don’t want someone 50 years or 100 years
down the way to take it away. Heck I am surprised
that we are still able to celebrate our birthdays and that someone hasn’t complained
that it is Johnnies special day today and no one can be special everybody has
to feel the same. Well if that is the
case do you have a sore ankle today because mine is bugging me?

Daily Dose of BS Feb 3 smile
Ever heard smile and the whole world smiles with you? My mom used to say that to my brothers and I,
there is now some studies out there that support this. These studies show that during conversation
we tend to mimic those around us. I guess
that this makes sense as if you watch a salesperson they will nod and smile
when you are talking with them, inviting you to sign on the dotted line. It works with others as well, note when you
are in a classroom setting or a work event heck even in your own home and
someone is happy you want to smile with them, same goes the other way as well,
if someone is in the room angry they tend to bring the rest of the group down,
it guess what I am trying to say is turn that frown upside down, and make it a
great day.

Daily Dose of BS Feb 2 snow day
Am I the only one that thinks it is weird to cancel school
the night before for the threat of the shoe dropping? I woke this morning to 25 degrees and no
snow, the weird part is every school in our area is closed. Today is ground hog day and I am wondering if
kids want life to be like the movie and relive the no snow – snow day. I haven’t seen that movie in a long time, I should
find it to watch today with the kids. Ever
thought about the history of the first ground hogs day? It dates back to the 18th and 19th
centuries, however the first documented time in America is 1841. I hope that the ground hog sees his shadow,
or is it not sees his shadow. Anyway I am
hoping to enjoy a bit of ground hog at the Moose Lodge later today, the Lions
Club is serving a Ground Hog dinner. All
I gotta say is it is yummy.

Daily Dose of BS Feb 1 trains
When I was a kid I always heard that if you put a penny on a
train track that it could derail a train.
I am not going to lie, as a rebellious teenager I tried it. As soon as we ran away the feeling of guilt
overtook the thrill of doing something bad.
The sudden urge to run back toward the oncoming train to rescue the
Lincoln from the oncoming train, only to be reminded of the almost certain
decapitation of an arm or worse. Thank goodness
that the derailment didn’t happen, in fact a quick google search shows that it
has never happened, but as an adventurous boy it could have. Again, thank God that it didn’t happen. With more trains moving through the country,
there have been more and more derailments there has even been a couple close to
home. Shouldn’t the railroads be
required to make the manifest public as soon as a train jumps the tracks, I for
one would like to know. Especially since
there are tracks about 100 yards from where I work.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 29 luck
I have heard all too many people say you are lucky. I am not sure that I believe in luck do
you? I think that we make our own luck,
sure great things happen to all of us, but does a 4 leaf clover, a fuzzy troll
or a horseshoe make or break your day? I
think that those work because you think that they will work, I am not sure that
some people are luckier than others. Here
is why I think that, the people that lots of people think are lucky have worked
harder or longer on something, not making them lucky but just more versed. I think that the same goes for bad luck, I get
it that we have bad things that happen to all of us some of us choose to have
that derail us others look at it as a step and others just look at it as the
cost of doing business. Which person are
you?

Daily Dose of BS Jan 28 school
What an awesome email I got from Western Technical College
the day before yesterday, I found out that I received two different
scholarships for my schooling this year.
I am humbled by the fact that I received these. When I was a student in High School and then
in radio school I wasn’t the best student, I guess I really didn’t care about
school so much, I had other things in life to do, like go out and hang out with
friends. As an adult I still have things
to do, more things than I did as youngster, like support a family, go to work
every day, run a small business, and hang out with friends, but now have the
drive to succeed and find the way to make it happen. Besides getting the scholarships I also made
the Presidents List all three trimesters, ending up with 11 A’s and 1 B, not too
shabby. This past year of school has not
been easy but I made it and also made some really great friends as well.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 27 debate
I guess if you don’t want to do something you don’t have to
do it. I get this from Donald Trump
backing out of the debate in Iowa. Whether
you like him or not he is garnering tons of free publicity, and it seems as
though he is getting the publicity for doing the unheard of standing up and
being a bully. I was bullied when I was
a kid but I think that all of us were to some extent. I decided quite a while ago that that wouldn’t
put up with bullying. We still have 10
months and honestly out of the candidates that we have running for President I am
not sure that I like any of them. As
for the bullying and the child like behavior of not doing the debate because you
don’t like the commentator, shame on you, if you are running for President you
should be able to deal with something you don’t like.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 26 sick
Seems as though just about everyone I know has a cold of
some sorts. I am hacking up a lung and
feel run down, some of my fellow employees are doing the same, in fact
yesterday it was like an echoing sneeze effect as I started it in the studio,
it moved out to the front desk then I heard it ricochet right on down the
building. What are your opinions of
calling in sick or coming to work? I am
not a fan of calling in sick and have done so only a few times in my whole
career where some people have a hang nail and call. Also are there any home remedies that work
for you? I am a fan of a hot totty made
with brandy, water, honey and lemon, I am not sure if it helps but after a
couple I really do sleep well.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 25 snow
For the majority of my life I have lived in the upper Midwest. I often complain about people not being able
to drive, I am guessing that this is a common thread for most of the
country. The east coast got belted with
snow this past weekend, and they basically shut everything down. I recall a few big storms in the upper Midwest
that slowed somethings down, and there were times when some of the roads were
suggested not to drive on but, a few years ago I remember driving across the
state of Wisconsin to get home from a hockey tournament when 20 plus inches of
snow fell and there were drifts about 4 feet high on the sides of the
road. The thing is even when that much
snow fell there were still stupid drivers on the roads, I guess including
myself for risking it, but at the time I didn’t even think of it. I guess I am
trying to say I am glad that the snow that fell in the east didn’t fall here,
so we don’t have to deal with idiot drivers in the snow, just regular idiot
drivers.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 22 friends
Back in August I proved to myself that I could step away
from Facebook for a week, I made it 9 days.
I took the app off my phone and it is still not back there. I do however look at Facebook on my phone
online, but there are more steps to it than the app. I read today that even though there are tons
of people with tons of friends on their “friends” list that we really only have
about 4 friends. Do you know who your
four are? I do but it is funny even
though we are friends we really don’t flaunt our friendships on Facebook. From the 4 real friends we have about 15 we
can confide in and about 50 who are close from there we go to our casual
friends and then acquaintances tops out at about 500. Do you who all your friends are?

Daily Dose of BS Jan 21 school
It is funny the difference between a child starting school
and an adult starting a new year of school.
As the college students head back to LaCrosse and college classes
starting all over the country, myself included.
Yesterday I started year number two as a student at Western Technical
College, working toward my Associates Degree in sales and sales
management. While driving to class last
night I was laughing to myself as I thought about the pomp and circumstance that
goes into a child’s first day of school you get a new backpack, have new
clothes, maybe Mom and Dad will take you out for breakfast, you most likely
will be measured with your back up against a door jam. At least that is the way it is for my kids on
the first day of school, and it didn’t matter if it was the first day of
kindergarten or your senior year, every year the same routine. I guess when you start college the second
year you get none of that, come to think of it I didn’t get any of it last year
either I guess.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 19 not fast sandwiches
You need a password for just about everything these days, long
gone are the days when you can use the word password as your password. In fact they are now suggesting that we use
12 characters to keep our things safe, using symbols and numbers and caps. As we are moving toward a more person-less
and paperless society with more and more businesses offering apps for us to
order, in fact I used a sandwich ordering app yesterday to show my kids I am
hip, and know how to use my phone, we ordered sandwiches online, drove to the
store, told the people working we were there to pick up the sandwiches, watched
4 other customers come in and order and pick up their sandwiches, and wonder in
amazement how that could be freaklishly fast.
It wasn’t, on top of having to wait we got a wrong sandwich and I now
have to remember another user name and password to order a sandwich that was
proven I could order there, and pay for it in about a third the time.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 18 cold
As I drove in this morning I was worried what if I get a
flat tire, or what the freezing point of rubber is, what if my tires hit a pot
hole and just blow out. Then I thought nah it won’t happen, guess what it
didn’t. It is weird how our minds sometimes start building up scenarios in our
heads then we end up convincing ourselves that that may happen. I knew in the
back of my mind that there was no way that this would happen but there was the
shadow of doubt that it may. I guess what I am trying to say that even though
it is 10 below outside that my mind is still active and being active on a day
like today is great. Get up and do something, inside, it is way too cold
outside to do anything. By the way do
you warm your car on a cold winter’s day?
I do for about 15 seconds. Stay
warm.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 15 customer service
All this talk nationally about Zulily and how they told a
customer to give their wrongly ordered item to someone who needs it is all good
and gives me hope for customer service into the future, but we didn’t have to
go nationally to hear a story like this.
My friend Kenny’s wife had the same issue happen to her, she accidentally
ordered three extra items from Zulily. When she called to return the items, the
customer rep said, "No problem, we will credit your account and please
give the extra ordered items to someone who could use them or donate." I
find this to be outstanding customer service.
I have also had super customer from Amazon, and quite often the customer
service at many of the big box stores is great as well. Now not everyone has great customer service,
but I believe in order for companies to grow, great customer service needs to
be present.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 14 lottery
Imagine my surprise this morning when I didn’t win the
lottery. I am not much of a lottery
player and I thought that the guys that never plays wins, sure- I throw in my
two bucks every time that work has a buy, just so I am not left out when
everyone else gets to quit. But yesterday
I asked my wife to do something that she had never done in her life, I asked
her to pick up a few lottery tickets. During
dinner last night we talked about how our lives would change if we did
win. Funny how the first thing that the
majority of the family said we would move.
I love where I live and don’t think I would have moved from the city, I don’t
even think I would quit my job. Any way
it was fun to dream for a few hours and it actually influenced my dreams last
night. I didn’t win and neither did you,
so off to work.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 13 sportsmanship
Poor sportsmanship was the theme of an email that went out to all WIAA schools last week. April Gehl a student at Hilbert High School had an opinion of her own about the email that said the schools need to step back up in enforcing what the WIAA sees as disrespectful fan chatter. Aprils response was “Eat shit WIAA” and she was subsequently suspended by her school for 5 games, the same amount of suspension as a player caught drinking or smoking pot. The email suggested that the typical banter that is commonly heard at games is detrimental to the players of the opposing teams - chatter such as “You can’t do that,” “Fundamentals,” “Air ball,” “There’s a net there,” “We can’t hear you,” “scoreboard,” ‘Warm up the bus’” and “season’s over” during tournament play. I am all for respect of all players and teams but suspending a player for her right to freedom of speech is, in my opinion, BS.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 12 pet peeve
I am sure I have my faults, and I do things that annoy
others, there are days that I feel as though I do some of these things just to
do them. Sometimes though they just happen,
like forgetting to close the cupboard after getting a plate, or not hanging up
my coat in the closet when I get home, I am sure that my wife can come up with
hundreds of things that I do wrong, or that she finds annoying. None of us are without our faults, not a
single one of us. What is your biggest
pet peeve? I have a couple, when someone
leaves the roll without toilet paper and when there is only a little bit of
coffee left in the pot, because someone can’t be bothered to make more. When someone annoys you do you point it out or
are you Teflon and don’t let it bug you?
For me it depends on where I am, and who I am with.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 11 sneezing
God bless you, gesundheit, bless you or don’t acknowledge
it. What do you do when some
sneezes? I have always said either God
bless you or just bless you. It is funny
but I think that there is some sort of protocol for saying something after a
sneeze. I think it is weird when someone
doesn’t say anything, for example have you ever been in a group of people and
someone sneezes, my first inkling is to blurt out the quick blessing, but time
has shown me that you must give the person that that person is with ample time
to give their blessing, if you don’t then you have committed an improper sneeze
etiquette, or a sneeze foul. And no one
wants to have that on their permeant record, now do they. I guess what I am trying to say is if someone
sneezes give the proper amount of time before acknowledging it however you
acknowledge it.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 8 credit cards
My folks always used to say those that understand interest
make it and those that don’t pay it. According
to polls 71% of us have credit cards. When
I was younger I thought I was rich I got a credit card with a large limit, and I
spent it, and spent it, I was maxed out by 21 and it sucked. I took out a loan paid it off and have been a
smart credit user since. When my bill
comes I pay it and at most only carry a little balance. That brings us to Walter Cavananagh otherwise
known as Mr Plastic Fantastic he has 1,497 valid credit cards, with a line of
credit at 1.7 million dollars. I have 3
cards myself one reward card, my business card and one issued by our bank. In your mind how many cards are to many?

Daily Dose of BS Jan 7 Netflix documentary
I have not watched the Netflix series “Making a Murderer”,
well not yet. It seems as though every
person out there has an opinion on the series.
My dad told me when I was a kid a couple of different things about
opinions first of all that everybody has got one, and a couple times I was told
that my opinion was wrong, that is a story for another day. Back to this series, the thing about this “documentary”
is that it casts doubt yet again on the media and the media that covered the
story in the first place. As with many documentaries
the makers have an agenda, and I am guessing that the film maker of this piece also
has an agenda that they want to push.
Think about it this way, anyone can go in after the fact and twist
things to fit into the framework of what they want. How many times were you able to explain away
something that you did?

Daily Dose of BS Jan 6 e-cig
I used to be a smoker, I look back at it now on it and
wonder why. I see many young kids
picking up the habit and think the same thing, why. I heard the other day that smokes are going
to be even closer to ten bucks a pack real soon. One of the smarter things I
have done was to quit. I have a few
friends who still partake in the habit but for the most part they have all quit
as well. I have been seeing the
e-cigarettes more and more and in the weirdest places, like while walking
through the grocery store and in the movie theater. I am now hearing that these are causing
cancer similar to regular cigarettes. Why
is it ok to smoke these in public but not a regular cigarette? I understand that these are only water vapor
or steam but I don’t want to smell it. I
get offended when I see someone walking through the grocery store puffing away
at their vape pen. You don’t like
walking through my sneeze do you?

Daily Dose of BS Jan 5
Too many people have the entitlement mentality, the I deserve
it, and the you owe it to me mentality. How
do we break free of that? We have the affluenza
teen, the kid that has had everything handed to him and he doesn’t know right
from wrong. Whatever happened to
teaching your kids right from wrong, whatever happened to the stand up and
fight for yourself, what happened to take responsibility for yourself? I am not sure I like the way that the world
is going, and I am sure that my kids are looking at me the way I looked at my
parents when they said that, but I really do believe that we are growing a
bunch of kids with the sense of entitlement, and it doesn’t make me happy.

Daily Dose of BS Jan 4 fight for it
As we settle in to work in the New Year, and think about the
up and coming year, get our goals set and our budgets ready. We think about the things that we want to
change and the things that we did pretty well over the past while, it is the
time for us to reset our priorities. I read
an article over the weekend that hits on this exactly an article that invites
us to look at it in a different way, rather than what do we want for the New
Year but to ask ourselves what would we fight for? This is a whole different way of looking at
the same ol same ol. Maybe a chance for
us to reexamine our life and existence. I
know what I want out of life but do I know what I am willing to fight for? That is question I have been pondering since I
read that article. In 2016 ask yourself
what are you willing to fight for?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 31 end of year
This time of year gives many the chance to reflect and
remember. As we wrap up 2015 and begin
our journey of 2016 I just want to hit a few highlights of my 2015, my wife and
I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary, I was a full time student
at Western Technical College, earning a total of 11 A’s and 1 B, in my 1 year
of college I achieved better grades than my whole career in High School. My favorite memory of my family was trumped
every Sunday when we all got together and laughed and loved, but if I had to
pick one it would have been Father’s Day, just because of the laughter and good
times. My job is awesome and I wouldn’t trade
it for the world but I did get to do the coolest thing I have ever got to do as
a radio personality, I got to climb down and go inside of the I-90 bridge
during the construction phase. Here is
to the memories of 2015 and also to the unpublished pages of 2016, may they be
the best ever. Happy New Year.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 30 pizza
Everyone who eats pizza has a favorite. Either frozen or fresh. I have a couple of favorites in the area, but
don’t have a favorite La Crosse pizza. I
like Pizza Coral in Holmen and Great River Roadhouse in Desoto, but haven’t found
the perfect place to get a pie in La Crosse.
When it comes to frozen I love the Sweet Home Chicago from Lloyd’s Pizza
and am really beginning to like most of the Lotsa Motza pizzas that are out
there, lots of cheese and a pretty good ratio of toppings to bite. My question today is what is your favorite restaurant
pizza and frozen pizza?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 28 phone
I have had a cell phone for about 15 years give or take, not
sure exactly when I ended up with one but I am sure I can count on two hands
how many times I have forgotten it at home.
And two of those times were in the past 3 days, and I actually left the
home yesterday forgetting my phone and then recalled that it was forgotten
before I even hit the garage, so it could have been three for three. I wonder how often this happens to people
when they forget their phones and then obsess about it for the day? This morning I was about 3 blocks from home when
I realized I had forgotten it and thought the heck with it I am going to leave
it home. The weird thing is that it is
habit and even though I don’t make many phone calls or text lots it is a
security blanket, it will be missed. I kind
of feel naked without it.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 24 Christmas
It’s the day before Christmas and no presents are
bought.
You are feeling quite down, real sad and distraught
What kind of gifts can you buy now and not look real bad
Some last minute presents cause feelings of sad
There are things that can be bought and wrapped or downloaded
and shared
And also items that showed that you cared
The trick to shopping last minute is easy
Is to not look like you waited, don’t make it look cheesy
As Boy Scouts have taught me to look all prepared
And when going to buy last minute gifts don’t look scared.
From BS with Bob and crew that work here.
Merry Christmas to all and have a great year.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 21 pageants
By now I am sure that you heard about Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe
flub. If not he basically read the wrong
name, he read the runner up rather than the winner’s name. Ok it was a mistake, let’s move on. I get it working in the public when we make a
mistake people know, the outcomes are different than those who make mistakes in
the privacy of your office cube or the walls of your home. Steve’s mistake isn’t going to ever make
anything that you do any different than what it is was. Time to let it go and honestly who
cares. With that being should we even
have beauty contests anymore? I can
honestly say I have never seen one, and couldn’t tell you who any of the Miss
Americas have been with the exception of Vanessa Williams and the only reason I
know that name is because of the controversy she was in. For Steve Harvey I get it man it is tough to
mess up in front of people but move on and don’t let this be the defining
moment of your career and for the promoters of the Miss contests is it time to
hang up the crown?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 17 economy
The Fed is working on trying to get the economy back to
normal. After 7 years of about 0%
interest the Fed is now going to be hiking up the interest rates by a whopping
.25% in hopes of stabilizing the economy.
I hope that it works. The decision
to move the rate up reflected the federal officials’ faith in the resilience of
the nation’s financial recovery and with the announcement stocks surged. The biggest change for most of us will be a
higher interest rate on our credit cards and our loans that we have
outstanding, it will be a long, long time I think until the banks will start
paying interest for the savors of the group.

Daily Dose of BS December 16 snow
I heard something this morning that I hadn’t heard in a
while. The heat was running at my house
when I got out of the shower. We have
had a weird 4th quarter weather wise. My grass at home is greener now than it was during
the summer, but I am guessing that this is because I don’t water my lawn. I am one of those that use the natural form
of watering, when it rains the grass gets wet and when we don’t get rain I end
up with a dry brown lawn. Here we are in
December and I have a full lush lawn that is going to need mowing if we keep
getting rain. I grew up in the Twin
Cities and it is funny how you just think there is supposed to be snow on
Christmas but did you know that in 116 years of snow measuring in Twin Cities,
a white Christmas happens about 72% of the time. And there have been 33 years
with either a "zero" or a "trace." In fact the last time the Twin Cities has seen
a brown Christmas was 2014. Are you ok
with this weather?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 11 Debbie Brague
I remember meeting Debbie Brague about 10 years ago at a now
Parenting Place event, we started out as competitors working for different
radio groups. Even though she and I were
competitors she was friendly. A little
over 5 years ago we began working together with her as my boss, I guess I am
not that easy to work with. Over the
past 5 years our forced union of boss and employee became a great
friendship. Today I am sad and happy as
my good friend / boss is moving on to a new adventure. I have no doubt that Deb will rock her new
job as a regional manager for Verizon. Deb
will be missed here at La Crosse Radio , she is absolutely the hardest working
person I have ever worked with, according to the Deb Brague way of thinking
there is nothing that can’t be done.
Also there is nothing that she would ask you to do that she wouldn’t do. I am glad that I have had the chance to learn
from her. Best of luck for everything in
your future Deb, I will miss our conversations….A lot!

Daily Dose of BS Dec 10 shutdown
Are we headed for another shutdown? The answer is no, the government just keeps
pushing funding through, pushing us further and further into debt. It makes me sick. Have you ever thought about your job when
they talk about non-essential jobs? Is
your job essential? I’m not sure mine is. In fact I know mine is not. Funny thing
when they do have these government shut downs, the non-essential people get
some days off, then they get back pay for the time that they didn’t go into
work. Hum. I call that a vacation. If the government truly wants to make a
difference next time they do one of these instead of a making a point - have
the whole government shutdown. I am guessing that that will not happen cause
the man never goes without. Could you imagine the people in Congress or the Senate
say no to a pay check? What about the
President? There may be a few out there
who will as a gesture give it up but really? It isn’t really going to affect
them the way it hurts the common person.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 7 verted?
Introverted or extroverted that is the question. I am not sure where I fall in the
spectrum. I like people but love my time
alone. Anyway I found an article that
could help anyone with networking. We
all have Christmas parties and other family get togethers this time of the year
and these tips can be helpful in any social instance. Don’t label yourself. Some of the labels we
assign to ourselves are holding us back. Let go of negative focus. Train your
mind to stop focusing on a potential negative outcome. Imagine the obstacles aren’t there. Most of
the time, we tend to imagine the outcome as a worst case scenario. Find the common ground. Preparation often
eases anxiety. Use self-fulfilling
prophecies to your advantage. But what if you appear less nervous and warmer. New behaviors are like new shoes. When you
first wear a new pair of shoes, it’s bound to feel uncomfortable. But the more
you break them in, the better you feel wearing them. It’s the same with new
behaviors. I think that these ideas and a couple of egg nogs will help with the
dreaded Holiday party.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 4 work
I will help my kids with their shoveling and mowing jobs but
they have to pay me for my time. I said
that on the air about 10 years ago and took the wrath of many but I got the
praises of a few. I still do help my
kids with jobs that they are hired for and still do collect a wage for my
time. What are your thoughts when it
comes to this? I have always had the
strong entrepreneurial spirit and have always found new and different ways of
making a few bucks, from doing commercial voice overs for businesses, to building
and hosting and websites, I even had a couple of candy machines placed around, I
have always had the drive and desire to get this done even as a kid and am
trying to pass that spirt on to my own kids.
There is nothing wrong with going out and working for your money.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 3 shootings
Another day another shooting in America. Do you feel safe? Are we as Americans safe? I don’t know if it is naivety on my part but
up until yesterday I think I felt safe, like I am an American and this is my
home. This morning I woke up to the
realization that these shootings can happen anywhere, and that no one and no
place is safe. There have been shootings
in schools, churches, malls, neighborhoods, homes, work places, movie theaters,
parks, when did this happen? What made
us as a society susceptible to all the violence? September 11th showed us what
could happen, but it was in a big city, but these shootings we are now seeing
are middle America. What can be done?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 2 names
In my 47 years of being on this earth we have seen a lot of
changes from our cars, and houses to the things we buy and eat…heck about 15
years ago I would have never bought bottled water, now water is one of my
favorite drinks. I would have never
thought I would be able to have a phone with me at all times let alone a
computer in my pocket. When facebook
came into existence I avoided it like the plaque now I post on facebook
everyday, It is kind of weird when I don’t.
The reason I bring this up is because I was thinking I don’t know any
kid named Bob, when I was growing up there where about 15 of us in my class
from Rob, to Robby, and Bob to Bobby and don’t forget about Robert. I was born in 1968 and then the top names
were Michael, David, John, James and Robert….for the boys and Lisa, Michelle, Kimberly,
Jennifer and Melissa for the girls.
Number one for 2010 was Jackson for boys and Sophia for girls and Robert
was no where in the top 50. Michael or
Lisa the top names from 1968 haven’t even broke the top 10 in this
generation. To see where your name ranks

Daily Dose of BS Nov 25 thankful
Everyone is thankful for something, for example family, job,
and the people in your life. I get those
things to be happy and thankful for, I really do. I am also thankful for shelter, the food in
my belly, the fact that I have modern conveniences all around me. I am thankful for the media, I get my news,
my laughter, my tears, my excitement, my livelihood from the newspaper, tv and
the radio. I am also thankful for
education and learning, if not for that we would be stagnant. I am thankful for the newer technologies that
are all around us, even though I get irritated by people being on their
computers and their phones all the time, I am grateful that this technology is
here and within reach of most of us. I think
that it is fantastic that we live in a free society where if we want to
complain about something, we can and that the government doesn’t throw us in
jail, I am thankful for the men and women who protect us both at home and away. The fact that I can turn on a light and have
it flip on and flush a toilet and not have to worry about where it goes, that refrigeration
keeps my food safe and that heat keeps me warm through the day. It is great that we can hop into our cars and
go. When you are feeling down and that
life sucks, step back and think, then thank.
Most off all I am thankful for you for reading this. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 18 Syrian refugees
Unless every state says no to the Syrian refugees, the
refugees can come flooding in right? And
what I mean by that is that if someone is in the United States there is nothing
stopping them from freely traveling from state to state. If there are fears of letting evil in why
risk it? On the other hand if the
boarders were never open where would all of us be today? There are not too many that don’t have some
other nationality as part of our heritage.
On this topic I really don’t have an opinion, on one hand I would like
the boarders closed, but on the other most of us wouldn’t be the people we are
unless someone in our linage wouldn’t have seen America for what it is. What do we do? I am glad I am not a politician.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 17 HIV
You know talking about HIV isn’t the most popular thing in
the world, but lots of talk on HIV and AIDS will be talked about in the next
few days because of Charlie Sheen and his revelation to the world that he is
HIV positive. I wonder if his diagnosis of
HIV is what pushed him over the edge while on the show 2 and a half men. I could see something like that making
someone want to drink to forget. I was
growing up in the 80’s when the AIDS virus was first diagnosed and was of the
generation that learned that you should always practice safe sex. The thing that bugs me the most about this is
that if Charlie Sheen did in fact have unprotected sex with people after
getting diagnosed with HIV and didn’t tell them about it, if that was the case
how many unsuspecting people may have the virus that causes AIDS due to his indiscretions,
or for that matter anyone who has the diagnosis and doesn’t share their
status.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 16 senseless attacks
I don’t get the senseless violence that is spread across the
world. The latest the attacks of concert
venues in Paris. What did those venues
do to anyone? 129 dead and for
what. This is the kind of stuff that
angers the world and makes people want to ban together not tear them
apart. I get that we are all different
and have different beliefs but sane group has the bombing of unarmed innocents
as the target? What is trying to be
accomplished here? Anger the world and
make people not trust? With these
attacks brings consequences, what do you suppose those will be?

Daily Dose of BS Nov 13 fear
The fear of something new and unknown those are the things
that scare me, a few weeks ago we had Halloween, that is not scary, Today’s
date Friday the 13th, or triskaidekaphobia, not scary. The fear of black cats crossing the road, or
any other fears or phobias. Again not
scary. For me it is speaking in public,
which I am working on and new technology at work. I was dragged kicking and screaming to move
from the old days of producing commercials on tape to digital, in about a week I
was able to surpass what I could do old school with the new technology. The newest step or bit of technology that I need
to embrace is twitter, I have had an account since 2009 however it has mostly
been dormant. According to my boss it is
time for the butterfly to emerge from the cocoon. If you can help me. Please do.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 9 trains
Little old Alma Wisconsin made national news. 18,500 gallons of denatured alcohol spilled from tanker cars into our beloved Mississippi. The train was heading south bound, isn’t La Crosse south of Alma? I know that having the double tracks in La Crosse now means that more trains are moving through our community but do you ever really wonder what is being run through our town? This ethanol that spilled into the river could have serious implications to the habitat in the Mississippi, and all the water ways south. I kind of find it ironic that the day after the Keystone XL pipeline was vetoed by the President that 2 tankers end up in the ol Miss.
Daily Dose of BS Nov 10 cam
Before the game on Sunday between the then 6 -1 Green Bay Packers and 7 – 0 Carolina Panthers NFL quarterback Cam Newton took a banner down that said North Carolina Cheesehead, with a Packer Logo over the state. Newton claimed that it was disrespect in the home of the Panthers, I don’t disagree that it was disrespect but isn’t that what sports has become? Disrespecting the other teams? I am all for the friendly rooting for your team, wear your team colors and show the pride of your team but you shouldn’t be worried that someone will take your sign. Especially a multi-millionaire prima donna quarterback. I would be willing to bet if it was a fan that took the sign down that the fan would have been tossed out of the stadium and also be criminally charged. I guess I would like to know if you think that it is wrong for a fan to show support for their team when in the house of another team? Did Cam Newton do wrong? I think that he should man up and pay the guy for the sign, and apologize.
Daily Dose of BS Nov 11 veterans day
Some in the service saw combat. Some of the veterans were behind the
scenes. Some of the brave never
returned. Each and every one of the
stories are different, but for the men and women who lived them, their time serving
was unforgettable. Today is Veterans
Day, a day to celebrate our freedoms, and the Men and Women who have given of
themselves to keep us free. This
Veterans Day, we honor all those who've made sacrifices many of us can only
imagine - If you are serving or have served, thank you, if anyone in your
family is or has served, thanks to you as well, because with that service came sacrifice
to your family. When you see a Veteran
today or ever thank them for their service to our country. God Bless America, and remember that our
freedom is not free; someone paid the price for your freedom.

Daily Dose of BS November 6 crowdfunding
It seems as though more and more are turning to crowd
funding these days. From people looking
to fund movies, to those that are trying to get an idea off the ground to those
that are trying to beautify a neighborhood, to those looking to fund their
college education. When is enough –
enough? Are we going to keep going to
the well looking for more and more funds for things that in the old days you
would either have to go to the bank of friends and family or a true bank? Last year there was a guy who used
kickstarter to try to raise ten dollars to learn how to make potato salad, he
ended up making $55,492. Come to think
of it, I would like to learn how to make a killer coleslaw, any ideas?

Daily Dose of BS Nov 3 music
The way we add music to our libraries has changed. I used to have 8 tracks, cassettes, albums
including 45’s and cd’s. Now I don’t even
have a player for any of those mediums at my house. I have a cd and cassette player in my cars,
but none of the others. I used to be a
big fan of the Sony Walkman and then the Discman, now most of my non radio
music comes from either my phone or a radio I bought a while ago that accepts
SD cards. Where our music used to be tangible
now it is just a bunch of zeros and ones.
Movies the same thing, we just don’t have the collections of audio and
video that we once had.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 29 parking
The one thing you hear people complain about most in La
Crosse is parking and that will soon be at the top of minds when alternate side
parking is implemented next month. We
always have alternate side parking November 1st through April 1st if there is
snow or no snow. 151 days to try to get
it right. I like to look at it like a game you can’t win. I am lucky enough to
have garage parking but my son isn’t as lucky. He gets to park behind the house,
at least it isn’t on the street. I
personally dislike the alternate side parking law. I have been living in LaCrosse for 23 but
have only had 2 tickets for parking on the wrong side of the street. With all this fine money collected, I wonder
where it all goes?

Daily Dose of BS Oct 28 not my job
I can’t be the only one who notices when signs are messed up
can I? For about the past week and perhaps even longer the sign for Highway 35
/ Great River Road at the curve on George street right in front of Kwik Trip is
upside down. This isn’t the first time
that I have talked about a sign in the city that is messed up. These types of noticed bug me because I wait
a few days to see if it gets fixed before I mention it, and I know I am
not. Speaking of signs there is a sign
on the Western La Crosse Sign that someone scrawled the F word. I know I am not perfect nor do I claim to be
but I do try my best and if I notice something within my personal or work space
I try to take care of it. I guess that today’s
lesson is open your eyes and notice things around you.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 26 mustard
There are those who do and those who don’t. Which type of person are you? Personally I am one who doesn’t, well let me clarify
that, I don’t most of the time. I will occasionally
use, but only in a rare case. There are
many out there that are using every day.
They are putting the stuff on everything from fries to sandwiches and bananas,
I have even heard of some putting it in their hair. Really the only time I ever use mayo is when
making egg salad, tuna salad or a blt.
Now for me I am of the other camp, I love a good hardy mustard. There are many flavors of the yellow stuff
out there, but I prefer either a whole grain mustard, a stone ground, regular
or horseradish mustard but not a honey mustard, yuck to sweet. Which is weird because I love peanut butter
and honey. Anyway which camp are you a
mayo, or mustard person, or the rare bird, both?

Daily Dose of BS October 23 ethical question
An ethical question was raised yesterday in class. If you were a engineering a train and on the
track ahead of you were 5 workers and they couldn’t get out your way and would
die if you continued down that track, and on another track that you noticed had
only one worker that would die if you switched tracks at the last second what
would you do? I spoke first and said I would
let the train continue to go down the first track instead of switching to the
other track because the original track was something that I had no control of,
if I were to switch tracks I would be the one who killed that one person. After I explained my logic I had a handful of
classmates agree with my way of thinking.
If you were in that situation what would you do?

Daily Dose of BS Oct 21 guns
There is a letter to the editor today in the La Crosse
Tribune that suggests that there be a plain clothed defender assigned to each
school that could be a familiar face in the school and be trained to protect
the innocent. I like this idea. I was at a store yesterday and they had the
posted no weapons allowed sign hanging on the door. I thought to myself if I was up to no good
and had a gun to bring in, would a sign stop me. The answer to that is no way. But if I was up to no good and I knew that
the possibility of someone within the walls of where it was posted no weapons
had a weapon, I think I would rethink going in to that place. I think that ideas like this have merit, don’t
you?

Daily Dose of BS October 20 skateboarding
Yesterday was such a beautiful day. How did you spend it? I raked, and played outside with my
kids. When the kids got home from school
we BS’ed for a few minutes then I asked who wanted to play catch, neither did,
but they wanted to play a little basketball, I have got to be the worst hoops
player in the world after taking about 50 shots and missing almost all of them I
was about ready to hang it up and head inside with my head held low. My daughter then pulled out the long board
and asked if I would pull her around the block, I did, then told her I used to
skateboard when I was her age. She didn’t
believe me, I then very nervously mounted the board and did something that I haven’t
done in probably 33 years, I skate boarded, slow at first, then a bit faster, and
it felt awesome. I guess that the lesson
today is don’t be afraid to try something again for the first time.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 19 playboy
I heard over the weekend that Playboy magazine is going nude
free in the future. Starting with the
issue in March of 2016 there will be no more nude pictures in the
magazine. I guess all those times when
people said that they were reading it for the articles really were true. As a young man it was always a rite of
passage for you to sneak a peak of the magazine. I guess that went away when people stopped
buying magazines. Speaking of change, I am
not a fan of the throwback jerseys that the NFL have forced down our throats
these past few years, watching the Packers game yesterday brought the comments
from more than one that it doesn’t look like they are wearing pants. To me it is just another way for the NFL to
take more money from us fans.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 16 freedom honor flight
I was never in the Military, I do however respect all those
who have chosen that path. Some real
important people in my life have gone in the service from my Grandpa Schmidt,
to my Dad, to many of my buddies, and more.
We all have special people in our lives who put Country first, many have
come back from serving only to not get the thanks that they have deserved,
which makes me sad. If not for the
sacrifice of their time and efforts we would not be free as we are today. The reason I bring this up today rather than
on a Veteran’s holiday is that my good friend Lloyd is making the trip tomorrow
to Washington DC as a Hero, on board the Freedom Honor Flight. From the first flight in 2008 FreedomHonorFlight.org
has been making this a special day for our Veteran. To my
good friend Lloyd and to the others on the trip, thank you for your service.
Daily Dose of BS Oct 15 overdose
Why is it news when a celebrity overdoses or is on the verge
of death when they brought it on themselves?
There are thousands of cases of regular old people who are struggling
with addiction each and every day. I
will bet that you are close with someone who is or is recovering from substance
abuse. When the national media glorifies
the fact that this celebrity has gone in to a coma or that celebrity has died I
think it takes away from the local problem that we have right here, in our own
back yard. I am sorry that these
celebrities have issues, and cannot deal with the celebrity machine that they
have built, but it was something that has been done by them, as it is when it
happens here with someone you love. All we
can do is reach out and offer a hand, and an ear. And let them know that there is help. Let’s stop glorifying drug use and abuse.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 14 phone
I did the software update in my phone sometime in the past
two weeks, and my phone has been acting up ever since. I went in yesterday to ask why my phone was
telling me that I had no space left, I don’t have anything on my phone but a
few hundred pictures and a handful of songs.
With the update my phone started propagating contact info from all my
accounts and it didn’t know when to stop, my contacts ended up eating up over
half my phones memory. I got that
fixed. Ever given much thought to how
things change? Life is what happens in
between your planned events. I got a
call from my Dad yesterday afternoon saying I will be there in about 90 minutes
we are just outside the Dells. I had no
idea what he was talking about as apparently I wasn’t getting texts because of
my phone issue, I am glad that I got to spend some time with my father.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 13 capx
The landscape has changed.
You used to be able to drive about anywhere and see wooden utility
poles, now the rural landscape is peppered with monster rusted metal poles
holding powerlines high above the terrain.
The CapX power line is done and there is a dedication ceremony today to
celebrate the fact that they finished ahead of time. At a cost of 2.2 billion dollars the cost of
these power moving lines will be shared over the 16 states that are receiving service
from these lines. I personally think
that they are ugly, and an eye sore. I do
think that it was pretty cool though watching what construction I was able to
watch, but that doesn’t change the fact that they look like rusted out dead
trees peppered on the roadsides of the Midwest.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 12 dine and dash
Well it took me till 47 years old to dine and dash. My son and I headed up to the cities over the
weekend to hang out with my brothers, and it just happened to be a get together
of some of my high school classmates. My
brothers and I headed out to meet up with them to get together to BS about
life. We had a few beers and then left
to head back to my brother’s house. I didn’t
think anything of it, till I heard from one of my friends the next day telling
me I left without paying. I honestly thought
that my brother was picking up the drinks.
I was wrong. Needless to say I owe
someone 20 bucks because one of my classmates picked up my tab. My brothers and I also hit up a bar that our
Dad and Grandpa’s drank at one time.
Besides forgetting to pay for my beers at the one place it was a pretty
awesome weekend.

Daily Dose of BS money Oct 9
I read sometime in the past week that is costs about 2 cents
to make a penny and about a dime to make a nickel. It got me wondering, are we at a point where
we don’t need to make these pieces of money any more, or should we find a
better more efficient way of making them?
I for one would bet that if we dropped either or both of these iconic
money pieces that prices would go up to the closest dime rather than drop to
the closest multiple of ten. I also
thought if the cost is higher than the value isn’t that for the first time use
then with each use after we split that cost, and eventually it would be
insignificant, right? I also wonder if
the cost of the metal to make the coins is higher than the value of the coin, won’t
that cause hording of the money for the value of the metal. Oh the things I wonder.

Daily Dose of BS texting Oct 8
You know that texting and driving is against the law
right? Daily I look at the people around
me the others that are sharing the road with me and my family and friends. Daily I see distracted drivers plowing through
their lives eyes down on a phone or other device while they should be paying attention
to the stuff going on around them. Daily
I see a distracted parent texting while in the car with their most precious of
cargo in the back seat. I have even seen
senior citizens looking down at a phone while driving. This is a problem, a serious problem that not
only is affecting us, but affecting people all over the country. The laws have been written to keep people
from texting and driving but that hasn’t helped. The police in La Crosse for 5 days this month
will be cracking down on distracted driving including stopping those who are
texting and driving. Remember that whomever
you are texting can wait.

Daily Dose of BS fair? Oct 7
Everybody wants life to be fair, guess what it isn’t, and it
never will be. I think of all the times
that things were fair in my life, and really truly they never were. Someone always has the advantage or the upper
hand. How we deal with that is what
makes us who we are. I recall when I was
a kid and my brothers and I would fight over the last piece of anything and mom
would always jump in and try to make it fair, offering to cut it up into thirds
the “fair” thing to do. Someone always got
the smaller piece or was the last to pick or wasn’t happy for this reason or
that reason. Fast forward to life now,
people get opportunities that you never got, how unfair is that? Guess what life isn’t about being fair it is
about making your own opportunities and knowing when to take them. Quit whining about life and take it.

Daily Dose of BS breakfast for supper Oct 6
McDonald’s has heard the call and starting today will be offering
breakfast all day long. Breakfast for
supper has been a staple around the Schmidt house for many years, who doesn’t like
a quick bowl of cereal and toast when there isn’t something else around. I have made oven bake French toast for dinner
and the family loves it when homemade biscuits and gravy is the evening meal. There is something about having breakfast for
supper, it is comfort food at a time when most of us need to be comforted, we
are just getting home from a hard day at the office or at school. McDonalds I’m loving the fact that you are
now doing breakfast all day, now you just got to expand the menu to include my
favorite McGriddles.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 5 trash
My parents taught me not to litter, to pick up after myself,
to leave things in better shape when you are finished using something. For the most part I believe that I do all of
the above. I really enjoyed Oktoberfest
this year, I like that for the most part that people were respectful of others,
and of other people’s things, there were a few issues like there always are
when your community grows by a hundred thousand for a day, but mostly things
were good. What I don’t get is the
litter that is strewn on the parade route and the cyclone of trash that is in
the college neighborhoods. I didn’t venture
to deep into college town, but on West Avenue I think that the visitors into
our beautiful city forgot to pick up after themselves. How hard is it to pick up your beer bottle,
chip bag, or solo cup when you are finished with it and put it in the
trash? Remember you Mom doesn’t live
here, pick up after yourself, in fact even if your Mother did live here, pick
up your own stuff.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 2 Oktoberfest
Year two for the shortened Oktoberfest, I said it last year
and will say it again. I liked the fest
being whittled down into 4 days of action packed fun instead of dragged out
over 9 days. You know that things need
to change or face doom, and this was a step in the right direction. After living in La Crosse since 1992 I have
been around Oktoberfest for 23 years, participating in the Maple Leaf parade
and always amazed at the amount of people who come out of the wood work to
watch and cheer. I always wondered
though, do people take vacation to go stake their claim of park land or
boulevard for a 5 hour parade? One last
thought, no matter how you celebrate Oktoberfest, I hope that great memories
are made. Here is to a safe, fun,
trouble free Oktoberfest. Gemütlichkeit,
Ein Prosit and Old McDonald has a farm, ummm I mean EiEiEio…have a great fest. And join us at the American Legion Post #52
for the slicing of the Golden Brat.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 1 prices
I love a bargain, really who doesn’t? Starting today Target is now matching prices
of their online rivals, isn’t this something that has always been done? I guess I always assumed that when you bought
something from a national online store that you automatically got the lowest
price. I do know if you have an ad from
somewhere and the price is lower that you bring it to the attention of the
cashier that they will often discount the item to the lower price, I guess I always
assumed that it was available to online shoppers also. I like that this feature is now available,
but it can’t help to make me think, is this a good thing? Hear me out, will this end well for us
consumers, if everyone is matching everyone else’s prices, won’t that just push
all retailers to not have sale prices and just use the manufacturers suggested
retail price?

Daily Dose of BS Sept 30 drinking at fest
We are going to be seeing many people drinking to excess
this weekend. It unfortunately is a
fact. I contend that you can go to
Oktoberfest and either drink just a couple to be social or not drink at
all. I have been on both ends of the
spectrum over living in La Crosse for the past 23 year, I gotta say the years
that involved less drinks were just as fun and maybe even more fun than the
ones that had overindulged Bob. I
understand that at festivals and especially ones where everyone seems drunker
than the next person, you feel the pressure to drink to excess, as I try to
show my kids in moderation it is ok, but don’t let it get away from you. Think before that last drink.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 29 animals
On my way into work this morning a possum ran out in the
street and under my car. I somehow
missed it. I also saw a mouse crossing
the road, when I saw the mouse I started laughing and thought to myself why
would a mouse cross the road, then immediately thought well to get to the other
side. I was lucky that I didn’t hit
either of these animals, I have in the past thought about the point value, you
know the old game there’s 10 points, but then kept on driving. One time a squirrel ran right under my wheels
and I felt bad, another time a rabbit did the same thing, suicide by car, not a
cool game in the animal kingdom. I especially
hate when the person in front of me gets a skunk.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 28 thanksgiving dinner
I got an email on Friday announcing that the annual Community
Thanksgiving Dinner was going to be cancelled.
Even though I had only attended that diner once, I had always talked
about it and thought it was one of the gems about living in our community. The reason for the cancellation is because of
lack of volunteers to step up and help. I am hopeful that this gem will return even
brighter than before. I guess that this
goes to show that even if something is good and helps the community that the
community needs to get behind and share their talents with these events, remember
that they don’t run on their own. If there
is an event that you like, this could be the wakeup call for maybe you to step
up and help out, I know it was a wakeup for me.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 23 happy birthday song
I always thought it was funny whenever there was a birthday
on tv or movie that they never sang the happy birthday song there was always
some made up song that went along with that birthday. Well that may change as the holder of the copy
write for that piece of music may only own the copy write for the piano music
and not the lyrics. I don’t know I will
kind of miss the different renditions of the song that we have grown accustom
to. Speaking of birthdays, my wife has a
big one tomorrow she turns the big 5-0.
Happy birthday Marcia and here is too many more birthday tunes for you.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 22 Christmas in September
I was walking through Shopko last week and they were already
pushing Christmas, over the weekend I stopped at Kmart and guess what the same
thing. When is it too early to start
pushing Christmas? Also what do you
think the take away for Christmas is these days? It certainly doesn’t have the same meaning as
it did when I was a kid. Now it seems
like the more crap you can get in the hands of the consumer the better. What about the simple times? One of my favorite Christmas memories was
when my kids were babies and we went to church as a family, had a great meal
and good family time. We did all this
with the traditional Christmas décor and of course the classic Christmas carols
in the background. Christmas used to be enjoyed in December not pushed down our
throats starting in September. Merry
Greedmas, and lets ho ho hope for lots of profits.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 21 Farm and Fleet
Have you driven from La Crosse north to Farm and Fleet? How did you get there? The Wisconsin DOT is working off a grant from
2003 to extend the turning lane on to Kinney Coulee Road. If I were Farm and Fleet I would be mad as
hell, I am mad and I am just an occasional consumer. I am mad that I have to either go up by
Woodman’s and turn around or drive onto the interstate and loop back around to
head westbound on Highway 16 to turn into the store. Not cool, not cool at all. When the DOT comes up with their plans don’t they
look at the impact of businesses around?
I also wonder if now that you have to plan for an extra mile to get to
Farm and Fleet if they will get an entrance from parking lot over by Target
now? How inconvenient for consumers and
employees. Also how rude for the
planners to shut down access to a business.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 18 Favre
Big year for Brett Favre first his number 4 is going to be
retired on Thanksgiving night and was just announced that he is a nominee for
the 2016 pro football hall of fame. It
is funny when you bring up Brett Favres name there are some that love and some
that hate him. One of my good friends
Tom never liked him even in his hay day.
Another buddy Jim loves him. Me I
thought that Favre rocked the game and was an iron man and was amazing when he
was on. I remember being like lots of other
Packer fans and wondered what the heck were they thinking when they choose to
start Rogers over Favre, honestly I was quite mad about it. I guess that goes to show you what I know –
not too much apparently.

Daily Dose of BS September 17 racism
According to you do we live in a racist society? I am not sure that I qualify to answer this
question, as I am a middle aged white male.
From what I see I think that we are living in a racist society, I believe
that racism has no color boundaries, that there are people in every shade that don’t
like or want to talk with another race.
According to Google when you type in define racism the answer you get is
“the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities
specific to that race, prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of
a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.” After hearing that definition I wonder if
people truly are racist or if people are just egotistical and they don’t know
about other races or people other than themselves.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 16 panhandling
Three times this week I ran into panhandlers and it is only Wednesday. Two over by Walmart on the south side and
yesterday while sitting at a light for about 5 minutes out by the Mall. I want to say get a job. The effort that is taken standing out there
with a sign is more than they would have to do for many jobs. As I have been getting older I have become
more cynical and when I see the sign that says will work for food, or anything
will help or down on my luck. I want to
say we all have bad days, how we choose to let those days guide us is up to
us. I have heard from others around town
that they have given food and drinks to some of these people and it has been
left there on the side of the road. I
also notice that once someone leaves from a particular panhandling place that
often that place is left littered with candy bar wrappers and pop cans.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 15 jerseys
Should major sports allow advertising on jerseys? The stadiums have almost every inch
sponsored, why not use the jersey for advertising, but use it to offset the
cost of the tickets. It is getting to be
outrageous for a family to go to a sporting event these days, you need a loan
and payoff plan in order to take the whole family to a game, then when you are
there don’t forget you gotta eat and drink.
Maybe they should look at sponsoring the jerseys etc. There are already the Nike swoop on some of
the jerseys or the Under Armor x on others, instead of trying to be sly do it
like Nascar and have the sponsors all over the jerseys. Save us fans some money.

Daily Dose of BS September 10 hs football
By now you have most likely seen the video of the two Texas
High School football players who intentionally tackled the referee in last
Fridays game. This was malicious and intentional;
I want to know who thought that this was ok?
There was a claim by some of the students that there was some racial
slurs said to the two players others are saying it was retaliation against the
referee for missed calls, either way it was wrong, and blindsiding this referee
is unacceptable. I think that this
incident should be made an example of, so that it doesn’t happen again. If it was a bad call, you need to live with
it because guess what- there are bad calls at each and every game. Plus you can’t retaliate each and every time
that something doesn’t go your way.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 9 fat shamming
Comedian Nichole Arbour stirred the pot last week by introducing
a 6 minute video titled “Dear Fat People”.
The video says that obesity is not a disease and that fat shaming is not
a thing saying that fat people made that up that it is the race card with no
race. She goes on to say what are you
going to do chase me? Well Nichole, being
a fat guy myself I would like to ask this question, who do you think you are
making fun of a group of people? Would
you make fun of any other group? I don’t
know who you are but, I would bet that you would most likely be one of the
first to stand up for almost any other group, what makes it ok for you to pick
on fat people? You know what if you are
happy with who you are, live life and enjoy what you have.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 28 no facebook
Social media and texting have been a big part of my life for
the past I would guess 7 years. I am
going to attempt to do something I have never done before, on Monday when my
vacation officially starts until Labor Day I am going to attempt to not text or
not go on to facebook. This is going to
be tough for me as I have been tied to facebook for work and pleasure for many
years, in fact my facebooking and texting have gotten so bad that I will miss
parts of life because I am looking at the stupid screen on my phone. Vacation this time around isn’t anything
special just going to be taking a staycation hoping to get a few things done
around the house, also plan on carrying on a tradition that my parents started
when I was in school, on the first day of school I have always taken the kids
out for breakfast, and don’t plan on disrupting that tradition. I hope I can make it from August 31 –
September 7th without texting and facebooking, any ideas on how to
do it?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 27 killing
Work place violence played out yesterday on live tv, kind of hits home to me and my coworkers. We aren’t on tv but anyone in radio has been on location broadcasting and not really aware of all the surroundings when doing so. When I heard the audio of the shooting yesterday I got goosebumps then later in the day I saw the tv news coverage unfold, and then seeing the shooters go pro video posted on his social media, this scares me. What kind of copycat type killing are we going to see now? What kind of demented, over the top things are we going to see next unfold live right in front of our eyes? I guess to me hearing and seeing this play out in the same week that we had a murder in La Crosse makes me think that there are people with no regard for life all over the county, and that makes me sad. Life is a gift we need to live it.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 26 preseason football
Do we really need preseason games in the NFL? With Jordy Nelson out for the year, I scratch
my head and wonder in disbelief and wonder what the reason behind having
meaningless games in August. The NFL
expects their players to give it their all for the 16 regular season games,
then up to 3 more for a couple of teams leading to the Championship game, the
one you cannot say without getting in trouble from the NFL. Now there are 4 preseason games added to that
giving up to 23 weeks’ worth of hurt that could be thrust upon these
players. Most of the time the preseason
games are a couple plays with the players that everyone wants to see and then 3
plus quarters of the second and third string players that won’t be around for
the whole season. I guess I look it as
have maybe one or two preseason games, then let’s get on with the games that
matter.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 25 stocks
I am not a financial planner nor do I play one on the radio,
however my dad is one and I have many friends who are. On Monday the market opened then immediately
lost over a thousand points. What does
this mean to the typical person? Well in
my understanding is that if you were to sell your shares of stock when your
shares were down, then you lose some money, however if you were to buy stocks
when the market was down, it would be like buying those stocks on sale. When the market has big swings you don’t really
lose money or make money unless you decide to make a sale on that day at that
time. My dad once explained it to me if
you buy a stock for 100 dollars and you lose 50% you are down to 50 bucks but
if you gain 50% you are only at 75 dollars.
I guess the way I look at it for me, is that I don’t need my stocks
today, so I am going to just let the shares ride, so no loss, except for on
paper.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 24 community
On Friday we had our first murder in La Crosse in almost 2
years. With all the crazy stuff going on
nationally all the anti-cop rhetoric and the whole you shouldn’t talk to the
police sentiment that is being preached to youngsters. There is a fear that is setting in, a kind of
challenging fear, one that is almost a fight or flight mentality. I have heard some say that we as a community are
close to a breaking point, some say that the police have no idea what they are
doing and others like myself that applaud the local police department for what
they are doing. I had the chance over
the weekend to talk to a few people who live in the neighborhood where the shootings
have taken place, in fact one of the women I spoke with owned a home right next
to the apartment where Randall was finally captured. And she said her neighborhood has been
slipping into the toilet for years. Are
you ready to fight for our community or roll over and play possum?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 20 weather
I am guessing that you have heard the old saying wait 15
minutes and the weather will change, right?
I saw a report the other day that said that this year we should expect a
snowy winter. Big woo we live in Wisconsin
and that what winter is around here. Funny
thing about the weather we all complain about it but there is nothing we can do
about it. My buddy Bill Graul has said
many times that with the forecast we always hear what we want for example if
the weather guy says we could see a trace to an inch or rain we edit the
forecast to benefit our day if you really wanted to go and do something outside
and you needed to sell it to someone you would say there is only a trace chance
of rain however if you didn’t want to do the outdoor activity you would say
that we are getting an inch of rain I heard the weather person say so.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 19 waste
About every eight days I have the same problem the bar of
soap is too small to use, I have tried morphing the smaller sliver of soap into
the bigger new bar of Irish Spring and you end up with a lump on one side of
the soap. What are we supposed to do
with those little slivers of perfectly good soap? Think about the wastes that go on in the
bathroom alone. Let’s say you’re on the
thorn you look at the paper and damn there are about 3 squares left for you to
finish your job, three squares are not going to make a dent. What do you do with those 3 extra
squares? I don’t know, I leave them for
the next guy, not really, but sometimes I do.
Think of tooth paste, if you squeeze from the middle you miss lots at
bottom and sides, I squeeze from the bottom
then about half way done I start the roll of the tube, then try to get the last
drop out, but there is still the bit at the top that you can't get. Which leaves me with the deodorant pack, if
you make it down toward the end of the deodorant you will either break the
piece off at the bottom or you will hit the sides of the container with your
armpit. Bathrooms truly are a place full
of waste.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 17 shooting
I moved to the 900 block of 5th ave 23 years ago when I first moved into LaCrosse, it wasn’t the nicest neighborhoods, but it was home for a couple years. I never felt unsafe, I never had anything stolen or in the case of this past weekend, I never got shot at nor did my house ever get shot at. What is our city becoming? Our family had discussion at dinner last night about the multiple shootings in the city over the weekend, and my youngest asked if there were shootings everyday like we had in bigger cities like Chicago? I told him unfortunately yes there are shootings in big cities all the time, in which he responded why. That is a dang good question, why? I read a blog yesterday that said if we rode our bikes more and had more green space that this wouldn’t happen. I hope for humanities sake that they were only kidding.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 14 wi dot
Houses didn’t used to have flair and inviting look that they
have now, when you go to build a house now or go to remodel an older home you
want your home to have a certain look, you want it to be individual and to have
the style that the homeowner likes, right?
Sometimes the general contractor makes the look of the home the way they
want it, and not taking in the account of the people that are going to be
living there. I kind of feel that is how
an entrance to a city should be also, don’t you? The city of LaCrosse is facing this same type
of thing with the exit 3 work that will be going on over the next several
years. The Mayor wanted the city council
to reject the Wisconsin DOT plan for rebuild, the city council doesn’t want to
spend the money to even have it looked at.
Where were these folks when the plans were being drawn up? Didn’t they attend the meetings to give their
ideas for the planning? Do you think the
city should pony up the cash to make the changes to the exit?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 13 bathroom spray
I am not and have never been a fan of the spray. I am talking about the masking scent that
lots of people spray in the bathroom after destroying a toilet. Almost every place that has a can sitting
there has someone who likes to press the button, and pressing the button is
fine for a moment, the goal of having the cover up there is not to see how much
of the can you can empty into a little room.
I am not sure why I don’t care for the stuff. I just know that it doesn’t make the room
smell like flowers. I also don’t care
for the natural smell either, but that is what the fan is for. Speaking of bathrooms, I think that the
public restrooms are learning after many use the paper towel to open that door,
putting the garbage can by the door- that is a brilliant move. You know what would be even smarter don’t you,
have the doors push out.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 12 forgotten kids
I saw a campaign on facebook to leave your phone in the
backseat when your baby is in the car, not so you don’t text and drive but so
you don’t forget your baby in the car.
Huh? Did I read that right, unfortunately
I did read that right. How in the hell
can you leave your baby in the car? I
just don’t get it. When I was a kid we
stopped to have dinner at a McDonalds and my brother wouldn’t get into the car,
after my parents pleaded with him to hop in, he didn’t so my dad drove around
the block and came back to pick him up.
Now days you would probably go to jail for that stunt, which brings me
to the family from France who drove 90 miles before realizing that they left their
3 year old daughter at a rest area. As a
dad myself, don’t you check the car seats or look in the mirrors at your kids
while you are driving? This phenomenon
of parents forgetting their kids happens so often it has a name it’s called
Forgotten Baby Syndrome. Here’s some
advice, look before you get out of your car, and look before you take off.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 11 neighbors
They say that 12 % of people hate their neighbors. How are yours? At one time I was living in the neighborhood
that I had always dreamed of, great neighbors who care about their lawns, we
took care of the elderly that lived close by helping with window washing and
lawn mowing. I still know most of my
neighbors but not all, at one time I knew every single family that lived on my
side of the block and about half of those across the street. With our society as it is with it being so
fluid, people have moved in and out of the neighborhood, and I don’t know if I just
got lazy and content with my space, but the friendships that I once had with
lots of neighbors has whittled down to the few of the neighbors who I’ve become
good friends with. Do you reach out to know
your neighbors, or not?

Daily Dose of BS toys
Remember growing up and the boys got GI Joes and the girls
got Barbie’s? I never had sisters so we
never had the traditional girl’s toys at our house. The toys at the Schmidt house were always
gender specific towards boys, my brothers and I used to play also with Legos,
and cars and trucks. Target is now going
to be removing the boy and girl label from most of their children’s department
toys, after complaints from some shoppers.
For quite a while retailers have been moving away from boy and girl type
of label on toys, and quite honestly having 3 boys and a girl at my house,
while my kids were growing up, I often wondered why some of the things were
labeled with either sex. I thought the
more creative items were always labeled with the girl label and more the cars
and trucks with the boy label. My kids
played with both until they got to the age where they started to notice that
this is a girl toy or a boy toy. I get
it with some of the toys, but really.
Who cares, as long as a toy or activity can help with the developmental growth
of a child, let them play.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 7 staycation
Often times our own backyards are overlooked. I am talking about taking a vacationing at
home or a staycation. My buddy Smiley from
Nebraska and his family are coming to La Crosse for a visit, and I want to show
them the best of our area. They have
been here a handful of times over the past 23 years, and we have done the
bluff, gone on the river, walked the marsh and had ice cream at a couple places,
hit the bars downtown the places that we think of first. If you were showing off our city where would
you take your guests? I am proud of
where we live and don’t want to miss out on that overlooked gem of Western
Wisconsin.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 6 forgetful
My memory is not what it used to be. I forget the most basic of things, for
example this morning I was trying to remember to bring a um…thing this
morning. I got about to work and I swore
to myself for forgetting my um thing. My
dad tells a joke where one of his clients stopped halfway on the staircase and
called out to his wife, honey, um do you remember if I was heading up or
down. That makes you smirk because we
have all felt like that at times, forgetting the most basic things. How often have you set your keys down and
forgot where they were, or didn’t grab your phone or watch as you headed out
the door? What about your car in a
parking lot. We have all forgotten
things, but as I am getting older it seems to me that those forgetful moments
are coming more often. You?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 5 to many
Is it to early to care?
I am thinking about the 23 declared candidates for President. There are 18 on the Republican side and 5 on
the Democratic side. Are we focusing too
early on who these people are? I find
it weird that FOX picked the top 10 republicans for debate, while the other 8
have a different slot to fill. I wonder
if the earlier slot for these candidates is because of the equal time rule. I do know that the primary is an important vote
as you get to help to whittle down the amount of candidates from 23 to two. Even though I think it is way too early to even
be thinking of this stuff, we do need to pay attention and be informed on what
policies are important to us.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 3 facts
I find this odd more than 50% of the people in the world
have never made or received a telephone call.
I found that stat over the weekend, then I started to do the math in my
head, ok most under let’s say 3 have never made or received a phone call, then
what? I like these kind of stats if they
can be backed up. The internet spews out
lots of useless knowledge and lots of people who think that they are experts,
heck anyone can write a book and claim expert status. What are some of the weird facts that you
have found that you know to be true? I
know that A 2 X 4 is really 1-1/2 by 3-1/2, and that each king in a deck of
cards represents a king from history.
What strange facts do you know?

Daily Dose of BS July 31 hunting
Every once in a while we get reminded that there are hunters
that sometimes aren’t ethical, this past week for example, we heard of the
dentist from Minnesota that went safari hunting and took out a giant cat. There are people who hunt out of necessity,
there are people who hunt for the camaraderie, there are some who go for the
history and family time, and there are people who hunt for the trophy. I guess I don’t get the trophy hunter. If you are only going for the trophy or the
kill aren’t you kind of defeating the purpose?
I admit I have gone on a few charter fishing trips and have enjoyed my
catch, I have had friends who have gone on guided hunts and they too have
enjoyed the bounty from the hunt, but to hunt just for the pelt or the trophy, I
guess that I don’t get that, am I missing something?

Daily Dose of BS July 30 brady
Does someone innocent bust up their cell phone and wreck their
sim card? Nope, no way, not at all. I think that the NFL should take away the
Super Bowl from the Patriots for lying, and cheating. If Tom Brady wasn’t guilty why would he bust
up his phone? I think that the NFL and
all sports leagues should put their foot down and make examples out of players
who cheat. Not only did he cheat, but he
changed the course of NFL history. I don’t think that a 4 game suspension is
enough.

Daily Dose of BS July 29 dads
I was lucky over the weekend to spend some quality time with
my Dad. Dad and I have not always seen
eye to eye, in fact we differ on many things still. However, I wouldn’t trade our relationship
for anything. I now know why I like to
talk and tell stories; he is a story teller and doesn’t like a quiet car
ride. I think it is funny when he says something
now I can either beat him to the punch or question why he does something a
certain way since when I was a kid it was this way and only this way. I guess it shows that I have always been a
listener. With Dads comes advice, and
lessons, what was the one lesson that resonates when you think of your
parents? For me a couple stand out like
always be thinking a few steps out, and always pay off your credit card.
