Daily Dose of BS October 7

Last night my son Zak and I went to the Dierks Bentley show at the La Crosse center, the seats we had were awesome.  It was his first concert.  I remember my first concert when I was 8th grade I saw Montly Crue and Ozzy Osborne.  This show was a far cry of a rock show from the 80’s but was a good show with great showmanship.  I was truly impressed with the stage presence of Dierks Bentley.  He really rocked the stage and the audience I think was pleased with the show.  I used to be the guy at a show who would go the front of the speakers and try to be right in the line of sound ….lots of loud music at many decibels times 25 plus years caused a hearing loss for me but thanks to Beltone, I can now hear again.  Last night at the show I wore surefire sonic defender ear plugs, these are no ordinary ear plugs they fit into your ear and allow you to take in and enjoy the show without blasting out your ear drums, no ringing in my ears today thanks to the surefire earpro ear plugs….not that Dierks Bentley didn’t try.

Daily Dose of BS October 6

I am getting a little irritated by people who don’t read signs, for example when a sign at a park says no dogs…leave your dog at home.  Don’t get me wrong I love my dog Spark.  The sign is there for a reason, first of all for the safety of the other park go-ers, the second is some people are afraid of dogs, the barking bugs people, your dog is distracting to others around you trying to watch the football, baseball, soccer etc game, they draw kids and they get in the way of the people trying to watch said game, and if they bite a kid….your in trouble.  Read the sign if it says no dogs….then leave your dog at home.

Daily Dose of BS October 4

I think that bathroom doors in public places should swing out.  Here is the reason why.  How often have you been in the bathroom and the person in the stall next to you flushed opened the door and left the bathroom without washing their hands?  I find this sickening…this is also the reason I don’t eat popcorn at bars.  I know this is just another look into the weirdness that is me.  Have a great day and don’t forget to do as the sign says in most public restrooms employees must wash hands before returning to work.

Daily Dose of BS September 30

I remember going to Q convenience store when I was a kid and getting fountain pop.  They had small, medium, and large.  One day they had a new cup the extra large cup…32 oz of my favorite pop.  I was excited.  I bought one drank about half of it and thought to myself how can someone drink all that pop.  I continued to try and finally was able to choke down that much carbonated sweetness…flash forward 25 years, I no longer drink that much pop, my kids do, but me…not so much.  I was looking last time I was at Kwik Trip and the 32oz extra large from when I was a kid is now the medium sized fountain pop, and we have all seen those insulated mugs that look like little garbage cans sitting on our co-workers desks.  It is no wonder that we are overweight, jittery and can’t sleep anymore.

Daily Dose of BS September 28

The other day my dog started barking and wouldn’t stop.  I went to see what was going on.  This old man had walked behind my car past my garage into my yard to take, no make that steal the aluminum cans that my kids have been saving for about a month.  I yelled out what are you doing and he responded I am picking up cans and talked to Harters about this and they said it was ok.  I am going to call an audible BS it is not ok, because I called Harters and they said it is against the law to as they called it “dumpster dive” in the city of La Crosse.  Now I wouldn’t mind if I had the aluminum cans out by my garbage cans but to walk into my yard take the aluminum, take money out of my kids pockets, lie to me and then argue with me about taking cans from my yard….well I have a problem with that.

Daily Dose of BS September 26

I have been in radio for over 22 years and for the most part have loved every minute.  I have been able to help out with different fund raising opportunities, come up with and execute promotions,  interview and meet many of my favorite bands, got to meet lots of famous people, even got to spend some time with President Bill Clinton.  It has been a real cool job.  There are some things about the job that I usually don’t like doing…most notably riding in parades.  I had to ride in the Oktoberfest opening day parade on Friday, and it really wasn’t bad.  The parade I really wasn’t looking forward to riding in was on Saturday the huge Mapleleaf Parade.  This is the first year I got to be a part of a float rather than just driving a station vehicle in it, and I really had fun.  Saw tons of people I know, got a few high five and a bunch of smiles.  Up next the Torchlight parade, see you Thursday night.

Daily Dose of BS September 21

A friend of mine heard a comedian say that you should never think about what was washed last with a bar of soap while you are standing in the shower.  I have tried to live by that since I first heard that…however sometimes you got to wonder… I am a bar soap guy I hate the liquid soaps that are flooding the market.  I think it is because you have to use one of those weird scrunchie things to wash with.  I tried to get in this century and use the bottled soap but just can’t do it.  Give me a good old bar of soap and I will have a happy shower.  There is a point in which the bar of soap gets to be about the size of a hotel bar and too small to use, that is when a new bar gets brought out.  The reason I bring this up is that we had guests on Monday night, they all showered yesterday after I left for work, used the rest of the soap and didn’t replace it, so I had to use my teenagers liquid soap this morning, I guess what I am saying is that I am excited to see if AXE soap really works.

Daily Dose of BS September 20

I saw what you did.  Have you ever looked around to see if someone was watching when you did something from adjusting yourself to when you tripped over the sidewalk or on the carpet at work?  I know when I do something like that I always look around to see if someone is watching or if someone saw what I did.  Sometimes you get lucky and there was no one around, but that is not being the case in today’s society.  There are cameras everywhere, and I mean everywhere, I read that on an average day we are on someone’s camera at least 75 times a day in the US and over 300 times per day in London.  I am guessing that, that number is a bit lower in our neck of the woods, but there are still cameras watching your every move…and if the camera misses it I am guessing that someone saw, and is watching, someone knows your secret.  As a matter of fact, dude in the red car driving down Jackson Street early last night, right before the sun went down…I saw what you were doing, next time grab a Kleenex.

Daily Dose of BS September 19

Weird weekend, I stayed home because my son asked me to.  I could have gone on a trip to Northern Minnesota for my Father-In-Laws 80th birthday.  My son had to work…I ended up having to also.  I realized that I am not a good be at home by myself person.  I don’t mind being at home for short bursts of time, but give me a weekend and I am going stir crazy.  I got bored, I grocery shopped, I went out for a few beers, I had diner with a friend, I did some cooking, cleaned the fridge out, emptied the dishwasher, filled the dishwasher, emptied the dishwasher and refilled the dishwasher,  went to a movie (don’t see Drive by the way waste of time)  I cleaned my office, ok I moved some things around in my office and it took me 4 hours to do it, I get easily distracted, I pick up some papers to throw them away and end up reading those papers before throwing them away, do this times a thousand papers it ends up taking hours of time.

Daily Dose of BS September 16

These last few days it has felt like fall is in the air.  I refuse to turn on the heat in the house until at least Oktoberfest.   I was tempted to yesterday.  I took my usual nap after work and had to grab a blanket.  I also have the windows closed.  I don’t know if I am getting old or it really is chilly.  I turned on the car heat both yesterday morning and this morning to help with the moisture on the windows, but grabbed a jacket on my way out today.  I like the seasons we have here, but does fall need to start so early?  I am still planning on wearing shorts till the first snowfall….

Daily Dose of BS September 15

The La Crosse police department wants to do away with crossing guards.  They say that this will cut about 51 thousand dollars from the budget.  Isn’t this cost a necessary cost?  As a parent I am concerned especially since there are tons of vehicles on the busy streets of LaCrosse not paying attention, and having a crossing guard there is an extra pair of eyes for the excited child just finishing school.  What is the cost of a child getting hurt?  Pulling the crossing guards now????  Weird since the Childhood Obesity Coalition is pushing for kids to walk and bike to school with the safe routes to school programs, and there are different programs at the different schools that encourage kids to walk and bike to school.   These programs are working as more than 25% of the students in La Crosse County are walking to school and these numbers have increased over the past few years.  I believe that the crossing guards not only help with the kids safely crossing busy intersections but that they are also a “positive role model and a trusted adult” on the long walk home for many children.

Daily Dose of BS September 14

I haven’t worked retail since I was in high school.  I have a few friends that work it now as a second job.  I am surprised that with many retail stores have call-in shifts, where you are on the schedule to call in to see if you are needed.  I would think that as productive member of the community you would have better things to do than to schedule your life around the “possibility” of working.  Don’t get me wrong, having a second job is a good thing for the economy.  But having a “chance” to work at a job and not get paid to be on call….not being paid for the opportunity to not work and then scheduling or not scheduling a family event or a vacation or a get away in order to not work seems silly to me.

Daily Dose of BS September 12

This weekend was a weekend filled with emotions from the Steppin Out in Pink walk on Saturday where 5400 people walked for breast cancer, to the Freedom walk yesterday and all the emotions that, that brought up.  My middle son had home work over the weekend, he had to interview us about what we were doing and thinking on September 11th 2001.  I was on the air with another radio station here in La Crosse and a listener called to say a plane hit the world trade center, we turned on the TV and like the rest of the nation we were in shock.  My oldest son was in first grade at Holy Trinity School, they pulled the kids into church after the terror attack, to pray for victims and to talk about what happened.  I like most, called all my loved ones and cried in disbelief.  In this past Saturdays La Crosse Tribune Kari Knutson wrote a column about never forget September 12…from how we reached out to friends, family and even neighbors, and how she chose to remember a nation united in it’s greif.  I am sad that we have lost some of the camaraderie that we had for about 3 months after the attack.  God bless America and as Kari Knutson wrote lets never forget September 12.  read it here  http://lacrossetribune.com/news/opinion/editorial/columnists/article_0a5af71e-db63-11e0-8444-001cc4c03286.html

Daily Dose of BS September 6

Ten years ago this Sunday is a day that most in our generation will remember like the, landing on the moon of the generation before, and the death of President Kennedy of the generation before that.  Why is it that the networks think that they own it?  If you have watched any network tv in the past couple of weeks, they claim to be the best and the first.  I will be willing to bet that you don’t remember where you heard it or what channel broke the news to you but you remember the feelings you had…the patriotism that felt, the American Pride that you had for the days, weeks and months after the tragic 9/11 attack at the World Trade Center.  I was working on the radio here in LaCrosse when a listener called and said a plane crashed into the World Trade Center and then a few minutes later another caller and then even more callers called with the news.  We reported the news and the feelings of the people who were living it, experiencing it, seeing it.  It was weird to have all air traffic cease after that day and when it finally resumed, remember how weird it felt and sounded?  I hope and pray that we never have to relive another 9/11 type attack on America.

oops..Daily Dose September 1st...forgot to post

My middle son is a teenager today, for many of the past 8 years he has started school on his birthday, this year is no different.  I give him lots of credit, I would have been upset going to school on my birthday.  I grew up in Minnesota and when I was a kid we never started school before Labor Day.  Now the kids start September 1st and go till the first week in June.  I think that is a long school year, see my post yesterday, I don’t think it is bad just long.  If there are any snow days the kids get a “freebie”  then after one, they start adding days at the end of the year.   So in theory we could go to school till July if we have a bad enough winter…it is sad to think that this is a possibility.  Could you imagine going to school even past the first week in June?  Anyway happy birthday Zak and hope everyone had a great first day of school.

Daily Dose of BS August 31

Don’t blink…awe ya did.  For the kids in La Crosse and Onalaska today is it…the final day of summer.  Kind of funny the different perspective that is out there on this day, kids are bummed summer is over yet excited for the new chapter in their lives and parents are excited that the kids are headed back to school, and even more excited that the kids to be out of the house for the day…no more messes to clean up after work, there will be food in the cabinets.   But there will also be sadness around the neighborhoods as you won’t be hearing the kids playing catch and tag in the back yards or riding bikes in the alleys, or splashing in the pools.  The dogs won’t have anyone to play with them in the mid-days and the electric companies will have to find a supplemental income since the tv watchers, gamers and computer kids won’t be using their electronics during the days.

Daily Dose of BS August 30

I celebrated number 43 yesterday…I don’t feel any older.  I notice the young guy with a baby face in a few pictures at home isn’t the guy I look at in the mirror anymore.  I wonder what ever happened to him?  All the hopes and dreams that I once had…had I realized them?  Have I accomplished all that I set out to do?  I believe that I have done most of what I have set out to do, but as you know things change, opportunities come and go, you are faced with different choices and the some choices are good and some are bad.  Changing your goals isn’t a bad thing….realizing that instead of someday working in radio in the Twin Cites that I love LaCrosse is not a bad thing it is choice.   Have you lived to your potential or lived your dream?

Daily Dose of BS August 24

Today's Daily Dose of BS is adapted from the Beloit College Mind Set List.  It can be found at http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2012/ .  Every year in August for the past 11 years a couple of staffers at Beloit College come up with a list of things that have always been for the new class of College Freshmen.  This years list includes.  karaoke machines have been annoying people at parties, They have always been looking for Carmen Sandiego, Coke and Pepsi have always used recycled plastic bottles,Shampoo and conditioner have always been available in the same bottle. Gas stations have never fixed flats, but most serve cappuccino.,Haggen-Dazs ice cream has always come in quarts,WWW has never stood for World Wide Wrestling, Pee-Wee has never been in his playhouse during the day, Caller ID has always been available on phones,Soft drink refills have always been free,There have always been charter schools...it is amazing all the "always has been's" that are still new to us.

Daily Dose of BS August 23

Every year at about this time, I start to feel old…I guess it is because next Monday I turn 43.  I really don’t know what happened to the time, I used to be the young guy in the group.  Now I am one of the old guys.  I was talking to one of the college students that works part time at the radio station about the Poison, Motley Crue show a few weeks ago, and he looked at me with a blank stare.  He knew a song or two from each but didn’t know much more than that didn’t even know the band members names.  He then mentioned some band…it was my turn for the blank stare.  What happened?  I thought I was up to date on the new, I work in radio after all.  I keep, or so I thought I kept up on the latest trends, I do have 4 kids ya know.  My kids look at me like I am an idiot but aren’t they supposed to?  I guess it is like Steve Miller says…Time keeps on slipping….in to the future.

Daily Dose of BS August 22

Summer is almost over for the kids.  Hard to believe that there is only one more weekend until the kids start school.  It is the first time that I can think of where my kids are not looking forward to the weekend.  LaCrosse and Onalaska schools open this year on September 1, which happens to be my middle son’s birthday, he turns 13 this year.  As the summer wraps up the kids are getting ready to take on a new chapter of their lives, parents are getting ready for the little celebration known as finally a clean house day other wise known as snacks can be in the cupard for more than a day…day, or the end I’m bored season.  Up next for the parents is oh yea I need to bring 2 dozen cup cakes to school tomorrow day…good luck.

Daily Dose of BS August 17

Ever got one of the dreaded honey do lists?  I got one yesterday with a handful of things on it, it started out with going to the bank.  Usually not an issue but the checks I had to deposit were for my business and the bank changed the way they deposited business money.  Next on the list was to stop by a fast food place to bring back a gift card that was purchased as a gift because when it went to be used it was blank…I talked to the manager on duty got sent to the 800 number on the back of the card then called the local management company.  They looked into it and got back to me it got taken care of, over 2 hours of BS for a 10 dollar gift card (it’s the principal).  Next on the list was to figure out how to get music on the ipad….failed, then stopped by an office store to pick up usb drives for the kids for school, they wanted the turtle and the penguin ones they were out—wasted trip.  A couple of other negative things happened as well, but all in all it was still a great day.  I guess if you have a positive attitude it is hard to get you down.

Daily Dose of BS August 16

I have an itunes account and do not know how to make songs play on my Ipad.  Is there a trick?  Why is it so hard to get an mp3 that I own play on the Ipad?  I have had mp3 players in the past and got the music to play on them just fine, however transferring the music over to an ipad, no such luck.  I can get the music to play on the computer in itunes but when you go to transfer to device no dice.  Any help would be great bob@wlxr.com

Daily Dose of BS August 15th

When I first moved to LaCrosse I was surprised by the fact that there is something going on almost every weekend.  This past weekend no different, I attended my first Irishfest, in past years I was out of town on vacation or had something else going on.  This year I made it and was intrigued and entertained.   My kids and I really liked watching the Highlander Games.  Watching both men and women compete with the hammer throw, the weight throw, weight over the bar and the caber toss, I mean where else can you see athletes tossing a telephone pole?  Watching these games while enjoying a Guinness outside, it just doesn’t get much better, up next weekend, Kornfest…not the band but a celebration of Corn in Holmen.   We’ll see you there.

Daily Dose of BS August 12

Don’t know if you heard this or not but Newie’s North Star and Newie’s Varsity Club are up for sale.  I was shocked when I heard this; I am guessing if you ever enjoyed the surroundings of either of these places you too are shocked.  The reason for them moving is that the Neumeisters, the owners of the two bars for sale wanted to put a new up scale sports bar in the old City Wear location downtown, and the city planning commission voted against getting them a liquor license.   When I first moved to LaCrosse downtown was in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most bars per capitia.  I know that we are no longer record holders in that category but, there are still plenty of bars on 3rd and 4th Streets.  I don’t understand why they won’t allow one more bar run by guys who know how to run and manage a bar.  I think if you are ticked off about this, you need to talk to your city council member and find out where they stand in this issue and do something about it.

Daily Dose of BS August 11

I got hearing aids from Beltone a couple of months ago.  It is amazing the sounds that I have been missing out on for the past umpteen years.  Maybe I was a bit vain to not go in before and get the hearing help, but at 42 I shouldn’t need help right?  WRONG!   I believe the past 24 years of radio and concert going as well as other loud activities I have enjoyed have taken a toll on my hearing, and being in radio it is important to hear.  Family life has become easier as no one has to keep repeating things over and over and over again.  My kids have said dad you don’t yell at us anymore, I never thought I was yelling, I was just talking loud enough so I could hear myself, the ringing in my ears has all but gone away….and the tv volume don’t get me started.  If your husband has selective hearing…maybe make a trip to Beltone rather than to divorce court.

Daily Dose of BS August 9

Today is my Dad's birthday... Today something is happening that usually happens on my brothers birthday in early November.  Today is election day.  True story my brother who is 2 years younger than I got to vote for the first time on the same day.  His birthday was election day and we both got to vote for president on the same election. I rarely have missed an election, in fact we take the kids with us when we vote so that they can see the importance of going to vote, plus if you don't vote you can't bitch.  So go out and exercise your right as an American and vote today.  Polls are open till 8.  Oh yea and Happy Birthday Dad.

Daily Dose of BS August 5

I am looking forward to the Motley Crue, and Poison concert at Ft McCoy tonight.  Two bands I kinda have a history with, I have seen both numerous times and love the music from the 80’s, I guess that is why I host the best of the 80’s on Saturday from 10-noon here on Magic 105.  The very first concert I went to was Motley Crue, Ozzy Osborne back in 1984.  I’ve seen Motley Crue 5 or six other times in the past 27 years, the worst being at Rockfest a few years ago when Vince Neil forgot the lyrics to his own songs…they still rock for being old.  I got to meet Poison front man Bret Michaels while interning at KDWB in 1988, then went back stage at the show that night, I was standing back stage with all the radio guys I grew up listening to and Bret came up to me said hey Bob and gave me high five, been a Poison fan ever since.  I am ready to rock tonight at FtMcCoy.

Daily Dose of BS August 4

I like living in the city.  You are close to the action.  I also like to visit the country and the sights, sounds and the smells that accompany country living.  A couple of weeks ago I was down at the family cabin and saw about 10 turkeys, a snake a few feral cats and a deer.   Yesterday while driving home from work from Onalaska to La Crosse, I came across the unmistakable stench of a skunk, now this smell is not so bad when traveling 65 down the road with the windows rolled up, but yesterday was the 1st non-humid day in many weeks and the windows were down and as I mentioned it was in the city, so city speeds.  At least I didn’t get any on me.

Daily Dose of BS August 3

This is the day that the air is turned off for the first time in about 3 weeks.  Finally a new feel, a new outlook on life, a new breath of fresh air in to the home, just by opening up the windows.   Don’t get me wrong, I love the air conditioning, but I also love fresh, non humid air.  It was beginning to be like the closed up feeling that you have in the winter with the heat running.

Daily Dose of BS August 2

It has been 19 years here in LaCrosse.  I moved here in August of 1992, thinking that this would be my stepping stone to go to the Twin Cities.  That was my plan all along…but something happened, I fell in love with the area, my kids were born here, I became a home owner, I bought a cabin, I made tons of friends.  I really do love La Crosse.  We have much of what the big city offers, such as a baseball, football, and hockey, there are tons of places for the arts, we have shopping and great schools both primary and secondary.  You can’t forget about our beautiful scenery from the bluffs, to rivers, to the breath taking views.  No other place where I have lived is so giving…every time there is a need and the local media sets up in front of the La Crosse Center, the Omni Center the Mall or where ever the call to action is, the people of this area hear the call and respond in the masses, it is overwhelming.  I guess what I am trying to say is thank you La Crosse area for allowing me to call this my home.

Daily Dose of BS August 1

Where I used to work I didn’t have an office, my desk was in the middle of the room and all used by all as a place to pile stuff…it was also the supplier of pens to all….so I thought.  I have had an office here since I started.  I used to be in that corner, then got moved to this corner, one guy moved out and another moved in and with each move things changed…I hate change.  I still end up with stuff piled on my desk and my pens still go missing.  I wonder if it is a conspiracy or if I am just that unorganized?  If you know me you know the answer, but I am going to go on thinking it is a conspiracy.

Daily Dose of BS July 29

Yesterday I was talking about my kids and going to games at the Shelby fields…it paid off, my sons baseball team won the in-house  tournament and my daughters softball team took second in their tournament.  I don’t know about you, but I had about 3 good ideas for my topic today and ran them through my head a few times thinking I will remember these.  Guess what I didn’t remember any one of them.  What is it with our memories lately?  It is not only mine but others I talk with as well.  I know I suffer from Can’t Remember Stuff, and I thought I heard of a self help group for it, but I can’t remember where it is.  I will admit that sometimes it is selective remembering, if it is something that I don’t want to do or a chore that is on the hunny do list, I may forget that, but some serious things have been forgotten over the years, like that idea I had for world peace…

Daily Dose of BS July 28

My oldest son just got his license and a car.  He is complaining about gas prices already.  Yesterday he put $40.01 of his own money into his car and said “Dad it was only ½ tank.”  I think now he realizes that things are not free.  Including time.  As a parent of 4 kids I often find that my “free” time is taken up with watching this or watching that.  In fact over the past 2 weeks I have been to countless baseball and softball games at the Shelby ball fields (missing out on Logger games)…and many double headers and a few divide and conquer games where we each take a game.  The final game of the regular season- in -house tournament is tonight for both kids in ball and tomorrow starts the final tournament of the season.  Up next…football, wrestling, hockey x2 and basketball, and don’t forget trips up to Mt La Crosse for snowboarding.  Thank goodness for all my “free time”

Daily Dose of BS July 27

Life is too short.  If you think about it our whole lives could end in a second, we will all leave unfinished business…each and every one of us will.  I came up with a quote about life long ago and I will share it with you…Life is too short to work at a job you don’t like, hang with people you don’t love, eat things you don’t want and to drink crappy beer.  If you think about it, life is too short to do the things that don’t make you happy.  Why should we put ourselves in the situation of not enjoying all the gifts that we have?   I am not saying that we are not going to do things that we don’t like cause that is part of life, but why set yourself up for misery, or failure?  DO the right things to get your life on track…and every once in a while enjoy something you love.

Daily Dose of BS July 26

I have really bad handwriting.  In fact I am a horrible speller as well, I think I talked about that before; I also hate talking in front of people.  Weird I am a radio guy…plus my mind wanders.  Back to having horrible handwriting, I had a teacher in 7th grade, Mr Schwartz, that came up to me one day in class and suggested after trying to  read my cursive writing that I resort to printing.  I did this for about 3 or 4 months when he came up to me and told me I should really look at typing.  I didn’t bother with learning to type until I was an adult.  I ended up with a highbred form of writing that would rival any doctors writing, I print, write and use squiggles and straight lines to form my words, in fact my writing is so bad that when I try to go back and read my writing I sometimes have no idea what a word is, that happens more often then not.

Daily Dose of BS July 25

Yesterday I had the chance to head up to the Twin Cities to see the Minnesota Twins.  I grew up in the Twin Cites, but have been in La Crosse for 19 years and am more of a Brewers fan than a Twins fan, but since they each play in different leagues…I guess it is ok to like them both.  I bring this up because of the fun that I had on the bus ride up and back.  I know I preach of camaraderie often.  But nothing really beats a bus trip with a bunch of people you both know and don’t know.  You get a chance to meet new people and visit with old friends.  When given the chance to go on a bus trip to a concert, sports event or city visit, I would suggest that you spread your wings and take the trip.

Today is day 4 in operation sweaty body…heat indices of 105-115.  Just a reminder that on days like today to make sure you keep yourself well hydrated.  Now that word is one word that I never used until the advertising agencies decided that it was a word, and now you hear it all the time.  Mostly dealing with sports drinks and bottled water, which is something I never thought I would drink but since I am not a big pop drinker I tend to lean towards consuming lots of water in the day.  I guess what I am trying to say is keep cool, and hydrated with the beverage of your choice on this hot day…is it pop or soda…I guess that could be a discussion for another day.

Daily Dose of BS July 18

Hot enough for ya?  I hate when people say that. If it is too hot for you why would you ask someone if it was hot enough for them?  I am writing this on Sunday afternoon as my kids play at what they call the the star park. It is really the Trane park on the soth side, the call it the star park cause it has the water sprayer in the shape of a star. You know we are lucky to live in a community where there are so many parks and they are all beautiful in their own way. And this heat it is good...sometime, but I am ready for a break in it though...at least a break in the humidity.

Daily Dose of BS July 15

As I was getting my show ready today, I started to think how lucky we are to have information at our fingertips.  When I was a kid and wanted to know how to spell something my Mom told me to look it up in the dictionary, now I just type it in a word program and it auto corrects.  If I wanted to know about the history of the United States, I had to look in the encyclopedias in the den then go to the library to do more research.  Now I don’t know anyone with an encyclopedia set at their house, and the last time I went to the library to do research was quite awhile ago…now going to the library is fun, getting books, music, or DVD’s, oh yea to vote also.

Daily Dose of BS July 14

Christian Lopez…may not be a name your familiar with, but I bet if I say the guy who caught the Derek Jeter 3000th hit ball I’ll bet you know who I am talking about.  Now this guy Christian catches the ball and then gives it to Derek Jeter with out wanting anything in return…a ball that could be worth 500,000 dollars.  I have done some soul searching since this has happened, and wondered if it was me that caught the ball would I have returned it to Jeter?  I really do not know what I would do if in that situation, the money would be nice, but I am guessing that the benefits that are going to fall on this young man are far going to out weigh the half million dollars that he could have got if he sold that ball.  Not only that but I think that Christian Lopez is a stand up guy who has a great future ahead of him.

Daily Dose of BS July 13

I am listening to Bob and Sherri while writing today's Daily Dose of BS and the song “Ya had a bad day” by Daniel Powter (see video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPHo72HjzYc ) is on the radio right now, it got me thinking…Don’t we make our own destiny?  You could be dealt lemons and you have the choice to make it lemonade or to be sour about what cards you were dealt.  I am a firm believer that we reap what we sow… if we are happy and show our happiness we will have a happy better day than if we are constantly bitching and moaning about how bad our lives are… so buck up Sparky and have a great day.

Daily Dose of BS July 12

I have always had a high tolerance for pain.  I went to “boot camp” fitness class yesterday and it kicked my ass.  I hurt in places that I didn’t even know that I had muscles.  I have never been the Adonis, always been a big boy, but in the past 2 years I have been going to Snap Fitness and doing the circuit weights and the cardiovascular machines, I figured it was time to step up the excising…and do a “boot camp”…I am looking forward to the next class, that’s if I can get out of this chair.

Daily Dose of BS July 11

I think that dogs should be in the back seat and restrained while in a car.  I saw a dog on my way to drop off a kid at an event, Dads taxi service is another topic.  While driving to drop off my daughter at softball there was a dog pacing in the car in front of me on the back ledge of the car, now being a guy i said to my daughter wouldn't it be funny if that dog pooped in the car.  That got me thinking that it was a distraction for that dog to be walking and thus could have caused an accident, this is why I think that dogs should be in a restraint...it still would have been funny if it would have pooped.

I don’t know about you but when I cook I plan for leftovers on a daily basis that way I have lunch.  I have planed-overs if you will everyday.  I am not a guy who likes to have a pb and j that is a good snack but not a lunch.  The reason I bring this up is I like to cook with spice and almost on a daily basis I have someone say wow who is trying to ward off the vampire or some smart alex comment on the amount of spice I put on my planed-overs, in fact one of the guys I work with eats Ramon noodles for lunch everyday and when I first started here he warned me that my garlicky lunch better not wreck the taste of his Ramon… I told him that it can only improve his lunch.  He has yet to complain.

Weird how you get used to something as small as a cell phone. I forgot mine at home today and wow do I feel lost without it. Crazy how you use your phone for everything from talking on the phone to checking Facebook and emails to recording the important things you run into with the built in camera. If we carry a phone we are tethered to the world, we can be found and find ourselves. I hope I don't forget my phone again.

Daily Dose of BS July 6

Motivation….what motivates you?  I am not sure what does me.  It depends on the day, some day’s it seems as money is the motivator and the next the family, the job, or the promise of relaxation, the outlook to the weekend...on short weeks I tend to look more forward to the weekend.

Daily Dose of BS July 5

Missed opportunity?  How often do you not make eye contact with someone while somewhere?  I like to people watch…this past weekend I was in Duluth and saw a person that looked familiar, I asked this person if he was so and so and it was a guy I went to Roseville High School with 24 years ago, it was good to catch up, of course we are both heavier than we were in our prime, but what the heck, it has been 24 years right.  Today’s BS thought …keep your head up, eyes forward and an open mind, cause you never know what you will find.

Daily Dose of BS June 30

Yesterday evening I stopped at a fast food restaurant to pick up something cold to drink while watching my sons baseball game at Shelby.  I went in as there were about 5 cars ahead of me in line.  I ordered my drinks, from a great trainee she was pleasant and cheerful.  I appreciate good customer service, and I think that the girl who was working the register will go far….I moved over to the waiting area of the counter to wait for my drink, all 3 of the drinks were about an inch from the top and the girl working that station kind of shook the cup and squeezed one of them to fluff up the cup.   I asked her to fill the cup full, I got a dirty look but she reluctantly agreed to fill the 3 cups full.  Was it wrong to ask for a full glass?

Daily Dose of BS June 28

Friendship is a great thing.  I am blessed to have such great friends; my kids think it is weird that I have friends that are both the parents and the kids.  I was a LaCrosse Jaycee for many years before I aged out and in the years I was in that group I met many great people who had kids that grew up into great young men and women.  In fact one of the guys I go fishing with is a good friend and I am friends with his dad as well…my friend Brad who is getting married this weekend is the son of one of my best friends.  Friendship is a great thing. Thanks to all who truly are my friends.

Daily Dose of BS June 27

Have you ever been out to eat and got something bad?  Something that you weren’t expecting, something raw, or over cooked?  Did you call the waitress over to bitch about your meal?  I bet that you did…or at least thought of it.  Now flip the page over and imagine you just had the best meal you ever had at that same restaurant, did you call the waitress over to tell her that?  I bet not.  Why is it that we are free and open to bitch and point out the faults of someone or something but are reserved when we are brought greatness?  I don’t know the reason for this either, but it is pretty sad that we do not go out of our way to point out the right or the exceptional.  I for one am going to try to start doing this.

Daily Dose of BS June 24

I remember hearing stories about how crabby the people working at the DOT are.  I have not seen that in the many times I have been to the DOT.  In fact yesterday I had yet another date at the DOT as my oldest son took his drivers test.  He passed, the lady who did the test said he did a good job and told us about a couple of things that he needed to work on.  We then waited for the automated voice to tell us we were next, oh great another bureaucrat to deal with…pay for the license, switch a title, and get out…not the case of course, according to my son I gotta talk with everyone.  Needless to say I found out that Maria who helped us out was a Magic 105 listener and has been told by a person in line that she was too nice…is there such a thing?…I promised I wouldn’t embarrass her, ok maybe a just a little.  Long story short no need to fear going to the DOT.

Daily Dose of BS June 23

I am one of the lucky parents who get to spend lots of time with my kids, so far this summer we have had a trip to the Dells and a Brewers game, and have had many conversations around the fire pit.  It is amazing to listen to them talk and dissect life.  In fact listening to my middle son yesterday evening talk about how he thinks about consequences of his actions makes a Dad proud.  It is not very often that even adults think through to the consequences of their actions…..and to think through something like…what if….something we did today changed our day and in turn maybe changed our life.  Actions have consequences and consequences have outcomes, some good some bad.  It is amazing that an overheard conversation between my children opened my eyes.  It is time to step up to the plate and take responsibility for our actions.

Daily Dose of BS June 21

Went to the Dells over the weekend, and used the WI Dells season opener cards.  What a great way to save money and enjoy what the Dells has to offer.  If you had the chance to pick up the cards, you can save on everything at the Dells from places to stay, to food, to shopping at the Dells.  But best of all you can save on many of the attractions at the Dells including some free and some $3 admissions.  My family got to go on the Jet Boats and also took in an upper Dells tour as well.  Some shopping was also done and don’t forget about water parks and goofy golf.   If your looking for a fun vacation close to home, check out the Dells.

Daily Dose of BS June 17

We live in a pretty safe area, why do so many people lock and alarm their cars?  I very rarely have anything of any value in my car and if I do what is to stop someone who really wants what I have from taking it?  The reason I bring this up is a few weeks ago, I locked my keys in the car.  Stupid right?  I had to walk back in to the store where I was shopping and ask for a wire hanger, I luckily had the window open a crack so it was easy to get in.  The other day a co-worker had locked her keys into her car, so I did a bit of internet research to help her to break into her car.  No luck, I did find lots of bad advice on the internet and lots of myths that are out there to be busted.  She ended up calling a tow truck to break into her car.  Lesson learned….at least till the next time.

Daily Dose of BS June 16

What are you suppose to do with the extra soap from a bar once it gets to small to hang on to?  I hate when I get into the shower and all that is left is a little sliver of soap.  What are you to do with that?  It is too small to wash with and if you try molding it to the next piece of soap it doesn’t stick to it and if it does it slips and makes the bar uneven and hard to use the next time and then it eventually falls off.  Also have you thought of what the last person who used the soap washed and the first thing you wash?

Daily Dose of BS June 15

Fathers day is coming on Sunday.  As a Dad I am looking forward to what my kids will say or do on this day.  I remember when I was as kid that I was always bugged by the fact that my Mom and my Dad had their own special day and as a kid I only had my birthday, Christmas, Easter, the tooth fairy, Saturdays and Sundays, the last day of school, when Grandma and Grandpa would come over and just about every  other present getting day that was out there, their a wasn’t kids day.  I remember it like it was yesterday when my Dad said everyday is kids day …. at the time I didn’t realize that he was right.  We tend to give our kids a lot, and that is ok, as long as it is not too much.  This coming Sunday if your Dad is around, I suggest that you take a few minutes out of the day to either stop by and see him or give him a call, and if you haven’t spoke to him in years, look him up and say hi.  I am lucky I have a great Dad, sure there are times that we disagree with each other but we love each other and it is one of my most cherished relationships that I have.  For you Dad, enjoy your day, and remember I love you….Happy Fathers Day.

Daily Dose of BS June 14

On days when it is rainy we are hoping for sun, on super hot days we wish for cool and on cold days we thinking about the warm days.  Why is it that we can’t be happy with what we have?  I am as guilty of it as everyone is, in fact my office window faces East and every morning as I am doing my show prep for the radio show if it is super sunny I end up closing the blinds as I don’t like the sun shining right in my eyes.  On a dull and dreary day I am wishing for sun….crazy we should all be happy to accept what is thrown our way.

Daily Dose of BS June 13

Everyone needs a weekend away with friends.  I got to spend the weekend with some good friends fishing in Algoma Wisconsin.  Our group chartered a boat -From Fishin Magician Charters, for the 7th straight year- we caught 8 salmon and 1 lake trout.   A trip like this is not about the catching of the fish -it is a big bonus- it is about the time, the quality bonding time you get to spend with your buddies, giving each other crap and drinking beer, also telling fish stories.  If you ever have the chance to take a charter fishing trip, I would suggest it.  These memories are good for the pages of your life.  The first charter fishing trip I took was 10 years ago with the sponsor of The Daily Dose of BS, Dr. Micheal Uss invited me to go on his trip.

Daily Dose of BS June 9

I started doing Improv about 3 years ago, which is weird since I hate performing in front of groups.  Also weird that I am in radio but that is a story for another day.  A co-worker had got me involved in it, and I tell you what it is one of my favorite things to do.  Every Monday night my group, Sum Assembly Reekwired gets together and plays.  As an adult we are taught that playing is not for adults…I am here to whole heartedly disagree with that statement.  Playing I believe is what keeps our minds lubricated, useful, and creative.  If you are interested in learning more about the art of playing, join us for Improv tonight thru Saturday at The Muse Theatre.  Or contact me to find out how you can “Play” with us.

reduce reuse and recycle. We have been hearing of this for the past how many years now? I have taken this to heart when working on the family cabin. I have bought windows from the Habitat for Humanity restore, I have used reclaimed wood from friends projects and the grill I have been using for the past 4 years was one I got from a friend of mine. My grill has finally died and I would like to continue my streak of using a reclaimed grill. I just missed my neighbors grill by an hour, as she put it out by the trash, mentioned to me that it was there to only find that one of the recyclers stopped by earlier to grab it. So if you have a grill that works, and don't feel right about throwing it away, I would be happy to take it off your hands. bob@wlxr.com

As hot as it was yesterday, thank God for Air Conditioning.  I must admit that the air is on at my house and will be for the next few days.  I do like to be able to fall asleep and not wake up in a pool of sweat.  Yesterdays heat brought out the fun in my kids, sometimes when it is hot we are crabby, at least I am…yesterday my kids set up the sprinkler and a second hose and had it running down the slide, they then made water park tickets and handed them out to the family.  I went to the Schmidt water park for an hour or so, and didn’t spend a dime, and had fun.  Try to keep cool today, and enjoy what you got.

Daily Dose of BS June 6

Have you ever been underwhelmed by a store?  I have heard good things about a local business so I thought I would try it out.  I wanted to give my money to a local business rather than a big box store or order online.  I needed a specific part for a specific piece of equipment.  I ordered the part I needed from this local business and was told that it would take 2 business days, I waited 3 days and returned to the store only to be told that it hadn’t come in yet.  Ok, not a biggie (not their fault, shipping can be delayed), I was told that the part would be by Friday, I went back to store on Friday to get part also to pick up something I dropped off to get fixed, the thing I dropped off to be fixed had not been worked on and the part that I ordered didn’t come in.  Talk about ticking a guy off.  As a small business in a small town you would think that service would be king.  I guess not….

Daily Dose of BS June 3

One thing that angers me is when people have no regard for your time.  I hate when people are late, when computers are slow and people have no to be me first.  Life is too short to have computers be slow and for you to not take the time to enjoy what is offered to you.  Take in and enjoy the gifts that you have been given.  To touch on the late issue, life is quick and when you keep pushing your meeting especially with loved ones, you are going to miss out on the important things in life

I don’t know about you but I crave information.  I like to know things and like to have access to them at my fingertips.  This is why I love the internet, I love that I can go online from just about anywhere to access the information that I crave, now.  I also do some writing, journaling if you will….blogging and have ideas hit me at the weirdest places.  Up until a few months ago I was at the mercy of writing down my ideas and then emailing them to myself.  This worked out great till I went to my father in laws and the complex where he lives doesn’t have internet, I was able to save the writings on my hard drive, guess what my hard drive crashed and I lost all my stuff.  Enter “The Safe” from LifeLink not only is “The Safe” a portable USB drive that is built to take with you it also offers preformatted easy to fill in forms so you can carry your information with you.  You don’t need to worry about your info falling into the wrong hands either “The Safe” offers a built in security system.  So if you crave information and are like me and want what you want now, check out “The Safe” from LifeLink www.lifelinksafe.com .... Would you like one?  If so email me at bob@wlxr.com and I will pick a winner from all who reply by June 6th

Daily Dose of BS June 1

Played in a softball game yesterday evening and I did everything I have been preaching to my kids over the years.  I tried my hardest, I hustled on and off the field, I listened to the coach, I had fun and a smile on my face.  The reason I bring this up is after the game, I felt like an all star.  My kids still look to me as their hero, my daughter asked me for my autograph, everyone of my kids told me I did a good job and one of my sons asked if he could wear my jersey to school today.  I know I didn’t play the best on the team, but I did play to my best ability, and am thankful I was able to get out of bed this morning (a 42 year old overweight body is not built for softball) Did I mention I didn’t even play in the sand…

Daily Dose of BS May 31

It is funny this year we were waiting for a warm day…. Yesterday we got that day.  It was actually hot. And what did I do?  I did the American thing, I turned on my air conditioning.  Funny when I was growing up my parents were so cheap about turning it on, now when I go to visit, they both have it on anytime that their heat is not on….in fact my Mom has told me that the heat and air have been on, on the same day.   Yesterday my daughter asked me at about the time that my sweaty head had sweat on my sweat…Dad can we turn on the air.  I said if you close the windows I will turn it on.  She did and so we have the air on….now the house is comfortable, the big question now is when do I turn it off?

Daily Does of BS May 27

I remember when I was a kid and we had a phone in the kitchen, the family room and the basement… that was it.  I finally talked my folks into letting me have one in my room, and remember talking to girlfriends all hours of the night and when my mom and dad would come in to say good night pretend to be sleeping so that I could continue the conversations with my girl.  That also lead to the not hang up game remember that one?  Not being the first to hang up after the conversation….. I think I had one that lasted all night, but my memory is starting to get old.  But the point to my story is that a phone was a privilege to have not a right.  When did having a phone become a right?  I have 4 kids as I have mentioned many times before my oldest is 15 and has a phone, everyone of the kids he hangs with but one has a phone.  My 12 year old does not have one but tells us that all the kids in his school has one…. I call BS.  The way that phones are used by kids now is that they do everything with them but make phone calls.  and if that is the case, why do you even need a phone?

Daily Dose of BS May 26

After seeing what I saw last night I don’t think that we have anything to worry about.  We are in good hands.  You hear people complaining about teenagers and the lack of respect and the me first attitude, and as a father of 4 I see it once in awhile, but I am sure, in fact, I guarantee that we all had the same attitude when we were growing up.  I was at the Central High School athletic letter recognition ceremony, and how impressive are the new generation of student athletes.  I am so proud of the kids and what they have accomplished in their short time in life.  The reason I was invited to the ceremony is because my oldest son lettered this year as a golfer, what a proud moment in a parents life when your children do something great.  Not only did my son letter but so did many of his friends, and classmates.  I am so proud of each of these young men and women.  These kids are the future of our country….and our world.

Daily Does of BS May 25

With High School graduations right around the corner, it is good to throw out this bit of advice to your high schooler…..Time is the great equalizer.  Over this past weekend I had the chance to get together with about 25 of the people I went to High School with.  It is amazing what a difference 24 years will make.  I graduated from High School in 1987 and have been to 2 of my 4 reunions….if you have never been I would suggest you go.  The walls have had a chance to erode…the groups that you were in have faded, you are now on a level playing field.  We have all had successes and failures in our lives but it doesn’t matter, the life you have lived has made you the person you are today.  Celebrate what you have become and stand tall….and the next time that Roseville Area High School has a get together I will be there.

Daily Dose of BS May 24

With the tornado that hit LaCrosse on Sunday we are reminded of the kindness of strangers, if you walk down any of the streets that were hit by tragedy on Sunday you will find countless strangers working together for the common cause.  To fix, repair and clean up the neighborhoods and businesses that were hit by the ef2 tornado.  The countless heros that were on scene on Sunday….a supposed day of rest, were not resting.  From the Police and Firefighters, to the power company to the great folks at the Salvation Army to the American Red Cross and all the unsung heros, the everyday heros, the Moms and Dads who watched over their kids, the neighbors who looked after their neighbors, the strangers who offered a hand when needed.  We are blessed to live in such a giving place.  For those affected by this latest set back good luck, and for those helping to make the setback a bit less of a shock…Thank you for helping our neighbors.

Daily Dose of BS May 19

I have been called on the carpet for doing this in the past, and was thinking about it yesterday, and thought I would share it with you.  A couple of winters ago my kids picked up a shoveling job, as the Dad they have asked me for a ride to do the job.  I obliged and in turn helped them to shovel.  I charged them ½ of what they made for the job.  I have also made them buy their own shovels and chip in for gas if they are using my mower.  I talked about this on the air a few years ago and many listeners came to my side.  The split of people were overwhelming tilted to my side.  The reason I bring this up this time of year is that with summer on the horizon and kids getting their first mowing jobs, as a parent if your kids are using your equipment, to charge them so that way they know that there is a cost to doing business.  You could always save that money for them for a rainy day, or when they ask for money (and you know they will) what do you think?  Hit me up with your thoughts bob@wlxr.com

Daily Dose of BS May 18

Online games….I never thought I would be the person to play them, guess what I love the games.  For a person who grew up with pong and old school Nintendo I am addicted to the facebook game farkle and I really like Angry Birds.  I read awhile back that the over 200 million minutes are spent each and every day on the game that could be done doing something of importance….like your job.  I am glad you can play it with out sound and that you can hide it from the boss and the family….it is an addiction….you know it is when you start to dream about being a bird and knocking down boxes…. However in my dreams….never mind this is a family show.

Daily Dose of BS May 17

The Wisconsin dot is running commercials to click it, why risk it.  Reminding you to get your seatbelt buckled each and every time you get in your car, they will be patrolling for this thru June 5th, with more than 300 local law enforcement agencies participating in this.  This is something that my generation has been doing for most of our lives.  I remember when I started driving that it was important to buckle up, my parents generation on the other hand put us in the back seat with out car seats when we were babies, heck I remember when we went on family vacations as a kid we even rode in the camper that my parents pulled behind the car….. and there are no seat belts there….and it was always fun to do so, until my brother and I got into a fight and he fell and cut his arm, we never got to ride in the back again… so remember on your way home today and out later to put on your seatbelt and know it is much better to click it rather than to risk it.

My son got confirmed yesterday at Mary Mother of the Church, The Bishop spoke… a very charismatic and well spoken speaker.  After the confirmation we had a family get-together we invited some of our friends and neighbors…. Isn’t funny when you plan a party in your mind you picture many more people eating lots of food, so you over buy.  I threw a dozen Kansas City Strips and a bunch of boneless skinless chicken breasts on the grill expecting all the food to be eaten, long story short we will have chicken and steak for the next week and a half.  Does anyone have any ideas on leftovers?

Daily Does of BS May 12

The number 21 has many meanings…. In blackjack it means you win or at least push.  The 21 gun salute is bestowed as a high honor to a fallen soldier.    It is the sum of my favorite number multiplied by itself, my favorite number is 37 so 3x7=21.  And if you add years to that…..21 years is a long time.  At 21 years old you are legal age to do just about anything that is legal to do.  At a time when most relationships don’t last as long as your jeans, 21 years is a long time… so my Daily Dose today is a salute to my wife of 21 years, putting up with my crap for that long is a life sentence to most.  We’ve been through stuff and survived.  You are my friend, you are the mother to our 4 kids and you are my love… Happy 21st Anniversary Marcia.

Daily Dose of BS May 11

I noticed that gas prices were going down from 399 to 379 thought I would wait a day or two and see the price drop again before I fill up….. mistake.   What the hell is it with these gas prices?  I noticed that one station had gas at 419 a gallon so I quickly drove to my favorite gas station on Losey Blvd and put 30 bucks worth in my 97 Honda…..not much more than a half a tank.  Ouch.  If the prices get any higher I am going to have to retro fit my car with the Fred Flintstone deluxe addition…. You know, the hole in the floor so that I can help “run” the car.  But then I am going to have to get new shoes.  Where does the spending stop?

Daily Dose of BS May 10

Why is it you need a PhD in toilet paper these days?  It comes in all kinds and what is it with these so called double, triple and quadruple rolls?  I bought an 18 pack of tp yesterday that was supposed to be “double roll” pack meaning the normal roll of 18 should have been a 36 pack…..  a 36 pack of not many sheets that is for sure.  I mean really why is it that companies can get away with telling you that these rolls are double rolls when in fact the double roll is about a 3 quarter of the rolls of old.  And don’t get me started on toilet paper color and scented or unscented…. That is a rant for another day.  As Mr Whipple used to say please don’t squeeze the Charmin…

Daily Dose of BS May 9

Last week I spoke about the need for people in the left lane to move over to the right lane for those of us who want to go faster than the speed of snail.  Today I was the only one on the road minding my own business looking forward to coming to work, when I noticed Johnny Law on the side of the road, the lights came on, I pulled over before he even whipped the U-Turn on West Avenue.  I got a warning and a reminder to start carrying my insurance card and that my tags were expired.  So to the cop that pulled me over, thank you…. For not only doing your job at keeping our streets safe but for not giving me a ticket, and for being a polite, normal guy rather than what we all seem to picture cops to be.  Would I have been pissed had I got a ticket, I am not going to lie to you… I would… but would it have been deserved, the answer there is yes.  Remember to slow down and keep your eyes open.  Again thanks to the Police officers out there for all you do.

Daily Dose of BS May 5

I am sick and tired of people driving under the speed limit in the passing lane, if you are going speed limit or below move over.   How often has this happened to you where you were in a hurry to get somewhere and the person in the car ahead of you in the left lane is going slower than the person in the right lane, causing a traffic tie-up.  These people should be ticketed for impeding the flow of traffic.  Please for my sanity and for the sanity of others who have a life, if you are driving under the speed limit or not keeping up with the person in the right lane…… Move over!

Daily Dose May 4

I am sick of the cold weather.  I was thinking about this on my drive into work this morning as I was passing cars that needed to be scraped.  Scraped on the 4th of May.  What is Elton John going to think?  Elton comes to LaCrosse tonight after postponing his show last month because of the weather.  Will it happen again?  I hope not.  Any way back to my rant about the weather.  I was thinking about all the weird weather we have been getting not only here but all over the country.   Maybe Mother Nature is mad.  We celebrate Earth Day and Mothers Day (btw it is this weekend, a free heads up) Why don’t we celebrate Mother Nature day or at least give “ Mom “ something good for her efforts?  Instead of tossing our trash maybe we plant flowers for her.  Happy Mothers Day early…. Moms

Osama Bin Laden is dead.  For the past almost 10 years he has been one of the most hated people for most Americans.  The report came last night that he had been killed and buried at sea…I did not understand the burial at sea at first, but sources say it is in accordance to Islamic Law.    The operation was authorized for Friday but for weather reasons, it was pushed to Sunday.  Four helicopters swooped in to the compound and the Navy Seals fought a close quarters gunbattle.   At the conclusion of the firefight, bin Laden's body was quickly taken away by U.S. forces for a DNA test to confirm his identity.  Bin Laden's DNA was matched with that of one of his sisters who died in Boston and whose brain was kept by the United States.  This action gives closure to those who lost loved ones September 11 2001.  I hope that we see the ground swell of Patriotism we saw 10 years ago.  God Bless America.  And for those who have helped keep America safe and free I Thank you.

Daily Dose of BS April 29

They say that billions and billions of people tuned in to the Royal Wedding today at some point.  Unless you boycott all tv and all radio, you will hear something about the wedding.  I got a wake up call when I woke up this morning when I turned on my morning media the national news had only Royal Wedding stuff on (that includes this radio station).  I went to check my emails at home and Yahoo was screaming Royal Wedding….. Punched up and down the dial and guess what the Royal Wedding.  I even made my daily call to home to talk to the kids and when I asked my nine year old daughter what she was doing she replied duh Dad I am watching the Royal Wedding.  Now ladies I know you think that this is the greatest day ever and that this day you all live for but as a guy…..I think it should be called the Royal Pain in the Ass

Daily Dose of BS April 28

Driving to work in the mornings I often am on the road before the sun comes up.  I am surprised at the fact that many others are on the road as well.  We must live in a 24 hour a day society.  When I was first starting out in radio I was the overnight person in a small town about the size of Holmen and think I was the only person up at that time…..now not so much now people are up at all hours of the night from playing on the computer to working to watching tv and insomnia.  What makes me talk about this today is that there were 2 different people on the road on my way to work the other day who were on the side of the road, one walking the other biking and neither of them had reflectors or lights with them.  Now you would thing the safety would be first and foremost on these peoples minds apparently not.  If you are out at the crack of dawn or a loved one is, make sure that they can be seen.

Daily Dose of BS April 27

I am an early riser.  I like it most of the time but really enjoy staying up late also, you can only do this so many days in a row….before your body begins to take notice, and as I am getting older I notice that the bounce back is not the same as it was in the past.  Age brings many good things like wisdom, and experience but sometimes I wish it brought smarts.  I know that it is not smart to stay up late multiple days in a row and expect the 42 year old body to respond as it did when I was in my 20’s or even my 30’s.  Would I trade what I have now for a time in life before, no, but would like to not be tired on a regular basis.

Daily Dose of BS April 26

I am the only person in my family who likes black jelly beans.  I have been trying not to buy extra candy cause I know that if I buy candy I will eat it.  The joys of being a guy that loves food.  With that being said, I like the day after Halloween and Easter morning.  Halloween cause I get to “check out” the candy for the kids and Easter Sunday because I get to eat all the black jelly beans.  This year I was excited to see that the bowl of jelly beans on the table had a good mix of colors and a lot of black jelly beans as well.  So I sat down pulled the bowl over to where I was sitting grabbed 4 or 5 of the best jelly beans ever made popped them in my mouth, started chewing, and made that face that is saved for total disgust as the kids said now even dad doesn’t like the black jelly beans….. I do when they are the right flavor….. these black jelly beans were grape flavored….. what a waste of a good jelly bean.

Daily Dose of BS April 25

I have to admit it I love ham.  That is why Easter dinner is so delicious to me.  My dad and step mom joined my family of six for Easter dinner yesterday.  I made the meal.  We had ham, homemade twice baked potatoes, the green bean casserole with durkee French fried onions, and rolls.  As I mentioned I like ham so I bought a bigger than needed ham hoping to get some “planned overs” after the big meal.  I thought when getting a ham that I should allow 1 and a half to 2 pounds per person like you do with turkey.  Guess what I was wrong.  I made a mistake, I goofed up.  I have more ham than I know what to do with, I bought an 18 pound beast of a ham and have about 15 pounds left and this is after I stripped the meat off the bone for a soup bone.  I don’t know what I was thinking but……I am going to have to watch Forrest Gump again so I can get the shrimp recipe ideas and turn them into ham ideas. Lets see I can barbecue it, broil it, bake it, sauté it, have it in gumbo, have ham soup, pineapple ham and a ham sandwich on rye of course.  Tomorrow what happened to the jelly beans?

Daily Dose of BS April 22

Phones are everywhere….. when was the last time you were at the store, bank, or even church and not seen someone either on the phone or texting?  I am just as guilty of the phone pleasure as the next guy.  I love my phone and feel naked without it.  I am however aware of my surroundings when on the phone and try not to talk too loud or say inappropriate things when out in public.  I really hate when you are at a restaurant and hear the person at 3 tables away talk THIS LOUD on their phones.  So when you are on your phone, think before you speak….. now I gotta grab this.

Daily Dose of BS April 21

I don’t know about you but every time I go out to eat…..every time. I always end up with the bent up fork, the one that should have been thrown away 2 weeks ago. And it never fails I could be at a wedding reception, a dinner party at someone’s house, a nice restaurant or a dive bar and with out doubt the bad bent up fork ends up in front of yours truly. I think it started off when I was a kid my Mom used to serve our dinner and 9 out ten days a piece of something ended up in my milk. Maybe it should be a sign I spend too much time around food?

Daily Dose of BS April 20

It doesn’t matter how technologically advanced we get there is still the elements, there is still Mother Nature, there is still weather. Take yesterday for example how many people were all ready to go out on the town, ready to spend money at bars and restaurants before taking in a concert? Elton John cancelled his sold out show yesterday afternoon (the 11th hour if you will).
So not only were the people who set their schedule to go to for a night on the town put out. Think of the people you didn’t think of that were put off because of the canceling of the concert. What about the babysitter who had planned on the extra 30 bucks for this weekend, the cab driver, the server of the food or the drinks at the bars and restaurants that didn’t get the business last night, what about the person who knew that they were going to the show last night and set up to take today off in anticipation of the “next day” do they take the day off anyway? Does the part-timer that was scheduled to work still come in? It goes to show you that weather still trumps technology.

Daily Dose of BS April 19

A friend of mine and I got in to an argument over the word o-f-t-e-n. I say ofen she says offten. I asked the other people around the table at the bar how they pronounced the word and they all said offten as well, I disagreed…. I asked around the building here at work, I asked everyone and out of all the employees here at LaCrosse Radio all but four agreed with me with a pronunciation of ofen. Some of the answers of why they pronounced the word that way was, I am not British, I am not hoity toddy and don’t say tamatoe either, the t is silent, it is standard American dialect, according to the Websters New World Dictionary saying the word aw-fuhhttp://sp.dictionary.com/dictstatic/dictionary/graphics/luna/thinsp.pngn; is first preferred and awf-tuhhttp://sp.dictionary.com/dictstatic/dictionary/graphics/luna/thinsp.pngn is secondary. As a matter of fact to hear the proper way of saying the word often check out the dictionary.com website or just click here http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/often So who is right???

Daily Dose of BS April 18

I read the paper yesterday as I do every Sunday. I like to check out the Parade magazine; yesterday however I was disappointed with Judith Newman the writer of the manners question and answer section. The question was posed I hate it when people who are clearly physically fit and park in handicapped spots. What should I do? She responded “ Wait until the offender has left the vehicle, then let the air out of his tires. Okay, no. ”
It does go on giving the right advice, but with the way that today’s world is and how we tend to just gaze at stories and not really read them, how many people just read Wait until the offender has left the vehicle, then let the air out of his tires. And thought that it is ok to do this. Some people don’t use their heads. If you see a handicapped placard in a car window but the driver seems fine, you might not be able to see their disability. The point is, you really don’t know the full story. And my point is I think the Parade should issue an apology.

Daily Dose of BS April 15

Today is tax day well at least it usually is. Reminder: Tax day this year isn't April 15th this year, and that has nothing to do with a government shutdown. It is because of Emancipation Day, which generally falls on April 16, is being observed in D.C. on April 15 this year. The holiday celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the district.
While many are used to the normal last minute rush to get their taxes squared away before the April 15th deadline, this year things are a bit different. giving taxpayers a few extra days. Taxes aren't actually due until April 18. I still think it is funny that people wait until the last possible minute to file them, do you not know that this is something that needs to be done year after year..... it is one of only two guarantees in life death and you have to pay taxes.

Daily Dose April 14

I am not a litterer I frown on people tossing their cigarettes out the window, it upsets me when I see someone tossing out the smoke, an empty can, a wrapper, any thing tossed should be tossed in the trash and not on the ground...... My kids have heard me complain about this time and time again. Here is the issue when I am eating a piece of fruit and I am done, I toss the apple or pear core to the ground, out the window of my car. My kids have called me on the carpet on this, as I tossed a banana peel out the window one of my kids asked me why I was littering and I explained that it isn't since squirrels and birds can eat the "left over food" prompting my smartalex son to ask what if a car behind you slips on the peel?

Daily Dose April 13

You would think after living for 42 years that I would know better than to get sun burnt.... Not the case, yesterday was running around with my shirt off and burnt parts of my belly that have never seen the light of the day.. I tried and old tried but true method of getting rid of sun burn before it starts, take a few aspirin before bed, that has always worked for me, most of the time it (the burn) would go away... not this time. so if you happen across some aloe vera let me know.

Daily dose April 12th

I am sick of the fact that when you go to buy your favorite products, they say 20% more for free when in fact it is the same size that you have been buying for 22 years. It seems that during economic downturns, it’s common for companies to reduce the size of products, thereby disguising price increases. Sometimes the smaller package isn’t even noticeable: Height and width might stay the same while the depth is shallower, so the product’s silhouette on the shelf looks the same. It’s sneaky, but companies know consumers are generally more sensitive to price changes than size changes. (it bugs me that the 1/2 gallon of ice cream is now 1.56 quarts)

Daily Dose April 11th

I admit it I am a tv junkie. I like to watch a lot of different shows, and I like the new shows as well as the old shows. In the paper yesterday there was a list of the shows that are on the "Bubble" here is a list of the shows that I like that are going to be canceled.
on NBC
Undercovers, Chase, Perfect Couples.
ABC
The Whole Truth, NO Ordinary Family
CBS
The Defenders, Mad Love, Bleep my Dad says
Fox
The Good Guys, Human Target, Traffic Light

There are also lots of shows that are on the bubble on all the networks, Harry's Law, Outsourced, Hawaii 5-0, The Mentalist, Mike and Molly, the 2 Criminal Minds, The 3 CSI's, and Lie to me.
This really upsets me as I enjoy watching these shows every week, thank goodness for my TIVO or I wouldn't have enough time to watch them all, in fact if they do cancel all my shows, what am I to do with my time?..... Read?

Cell phones

We all have them....at least most of us, and you never seem to get peoples full undivided attention anymore. I even notice myself looking at my phone when I am in conversation with some people. And don't get me started on kids or people standing in line at the store. I really do not care to hear your telephone conversation. You do not need to yell into the cell, you can be heard on the other end of the line talking in a normal voice.

Poorly timed stop lights - your daily dose

I leave for work at 445 every morning. I am often the only person on the road at that time. I do not understand why the stop lights in the city of LaCrosse don't do anything but flash at that time in the morning, you do not have to deal with cars.... except for mine. I have had to stop at a stop light 4 times out of the past 5 days on the way to work. AND THERE IS NO ONE ON THE ROAD. Don't get me started on the timing of the lights on my way home. You would think if you had a constant speed (the speed limit) that you would be able to get through the city's of Onalaska and LaCrosse. You would think.

Thoughts

I found in the paper this morning a letter to the editor about reminding people to get out and vote next week. I agree with that. I do not agree with the fact that a letter writer said.... I do not know the candidate very well but he has a good family and that is the reason I am voting for this person.

Oversleeping the alarm

I am usually pretty good at getting up for my alarm. Today however, it didnt ring and I woke up with a case of the ohhhh craps..... (insert favorite swear word here) My wife and countless friends tell me that they set the alarm for an hour before they have to get up and hit snooze many times.... I don't get it.

Here’s How to Stop Oversleeping:
Step 1: Decide to ‘Wake Up’…

There’s no easier way to say it – Oversleeping is an escape mechanism. If you want to stop oversleeping, you’d have to figure out why some part of you chooses to stay in bed. Confront it. Then decide to deal with it, instead of running away from it by oversleeping.
