Daily Dose of BS May 30 Rosanne

Did ABC do the right thing by canceling Rosanne’s TV immediately after her tweet, or should they have waited until after the backlash and then fired her?  I feel as though there is a double standard when it comes to network TV and what you can and can’t say, what you can or can’t do, what you can or can’t show.  I also think that people post way too many slams against people on their social media and use it also for airing dirty laundry.  I really try not to air dirty laundry on mine, I also try to not bully people on my social media accounts.  Hell, even on my radio show which is personality and guest driven and not a news-based show, I try to portray people in a good and fair light.  Did Rosanne deserve to be fired, yes if the networks are going to hold all-stars to the same standards, no if they are buckling to a certain demographic and firing her because she is pro-Trump.

Daily Dose of BS May 29 weird stuff we eat

I just read a story about how cockroach milk is the next superfood.  Who in the hell is the first person to try that and say this is not bad?  Then study it and then make it available for others to drink.  I am still grossed out by some foods that are actually parts of the stuff we eat now, like the organs, and the feet.  It took me a long time to eat farm fresh eggs just because they looked different from the ones I was used to.  When the tv show Fear Factor was on and they had to digest some odd things, I totally felt the gag reflex start low.  But I guess someone has to be the first to try different things, for example, all of the foods that we eat.  I couldn’t imagine how the first taster of milk got others to try it, of the person who first tried an egg or how about the first burger.  I am guessing that having cockroach milk wouldn’t be the worst thing, probably knowing what we really do eat would probably surprise us the most.

Daily Dose of BS May 25 judge not

Doesn’t the old saying say, judge, not lest ye be judged?  I am sorry to say we are all judges and juries as we all judge and try people on a fairly regular basis.   I do it myself.  I try not to but we have the walls that we put up to save ourselves from getting hurt.  Weird because I too get judged on a fairly regular basis, I get mine because I am a big guy with a soul patch, and if I am not smiling I look as though I could be mean, those that know me know just how mean I am.  A good friend of mine who is tattooed from head to toe with gauge earrings and silicone implants is visiting me in La Crosse, and last night we went to a store then out to dinner, as we walked around the store, I was surprised by the looks that he got, at the restaurant we went to downtown La Crosse, the same thing.  People judged before they knew him.  If I am being honest, I must say that I too would have judged him had I not had conversations with him on my radio show before we first met, he broke down those barriers, weird to me that they were even up.  I can say that because of my tattooed friend most of those barriers are broken, or at least weakened. My friend Joshua has helped me to not notice the art but to notice the man.  By having Josh in my life has helped me to open my heart and my mind to explore those that are not like me.  Manners and Motivation a couple of things that we all could work on.

Daily Dose of BS May 24 NFL stance on anthem

The National Football League is making a stand on protesting NFL players saying that players must stand during the National Anthem.  Do you agree with this?  Before you answer, take this into consideration, what if everyone was to stop what they are doing regardless of where they are in the stadium?  What if concessions stop, the bathroom closes down, that the tv cameras don’t focus on the players or the stands but focus strictly on the flag?  What if the people at home had to stand, and if listening to the game on the radio you stood and sang.  Does that change your perception?  Do you think that NFL players or anyone for that matter have the right to sit out during the National Anthem?  I think that that absolutely you the players and the fans have the right to do what they believe is right, this is after all America.  Sit, stand, kneel do whatever.  I, however, choose to stand when at a game live, and will continue to sit in my chair and watch the game if televised.  I wonder if the NFL changed this up just to appease the advertisers and the tv ratings?

Daily Dose of BS May 23 best food

Over the past few years we have been bombarded with La Crosse best lists from best car lot to best radio station to best fill in the blank.  What I want to know is what are the best foods?  There is always a list telling us what some people think is the greatest burger, pizza, donut or sandwich.  Those lists are based on what?  On what people like, right?  I don’t want to sway you one way or another on this so I am not even going to even give you any categories, who in your mind has the best food?  What foods do you crave, and what is your favorite beverage?  Who has the best servers or bartenders?  Who is the best of the best?  Also, what food or restaurant would you like to see where you live?

Daily Dose of BS May 22 100 per child

I am certainly not going to get rich with the $100 per child tax credit that the state of Wisconsin is offering.  Governor Scott Walker is sending the supposed surplus back to the taxpayers of Wisconsin.  I wonder if it could be better used to perhaps fix the potholes in the state, maybe work on safety in the schools, how about a couple of free days in the state parks or Mississippi River clean-up.  There are a lot of great things that the state could improve upon with a pile of cash.  While I am not opposed to collecting $100 per child under 18, A hundred bucks isn’t going to make or break anyone.  A hundred bucks will pay for a family to go out for dinner at a nice with maybe a movie rental afterward, a couple pairs of shoes for your child, maybe a couple of new outfits for school, or a cheap bike.  Don’t get me wrong I already filled out my paperwork for ours, and I encourage you to do the same, but do you really think that $100 will make or break a family?

Daily Dose of BS May 21 another school shooting

When I got home from my mini vacation I asked, of course, asked my kids how things went and the typical teenager slash parent talk, then I asked the kids about fear.  I asked if they were afraid at school because of the school shooting last week.  The answer was no, but that some kids were afraid at school.  I couldn’t imagine waking up getting ready for school then going to school and instead of being there to learn, having the fear of who is going to cause the next violent outbreak.  The latest school shooting left 10 dead and 13 injured.  And for what?  I heard a report this morning on way to work that the shooter didn’t shoot people he liked and wanted to injure some and not kill them so that way his story could be told.  In my opinion, if you want your story told, do good.  Make a splash with positive not negative and for crying out loud, quit hurting people around you.

Daily Dose of BS May 16 royal wedding

It’s a wedding the marriage of two people who you don’t know, nor will you ever know, or will you be invited to the wedding, dinner or the dance.  Why do you care?  By the next time I work, there will have been a big royal who cares.  I really don’t get the hoopla over the royal wedding.  I am hard pressed to find a reason to go to weddings of those I know, let alone care about the marriage of two people that live far away and have no meaning what’s-so-ever to me or my life.  And what would you get a future king?  A blender, some cash, some china?  I don’t get it nor will I pretend to care.  I do feel bad for the other people who are getting married on the same day because I am guessing that some are going to miss their friend’s wedding to watch the royal wedding.

Daily Dose of BS May 15 eminent domain

The process of eminent domain is underway.  The city of La Crosse hired a firm out of Eau Claire to oversee dealings with the piece of the puzzle for the entrance of the Riverside North property.  The Board of Public Works agreed to pay a company just a bit over 5 grand to make sure that all the I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed in the dealings with the Wettstein Brothers JRD Ltd.  La Crosse hopes to buy the lot that they own to create the opening needed for the new 65-acre parcel of land the will be developed into housing, some businesses, and some recreation areas.  According to the La Crosse Tribune, the city is moving forward with the eminent domain acquisition to ease the process of purchasing it.

Daily Dose of BS May 14 you can buy anything

You can pretty much order anything on the internet, in fact a grandmother was "very shocked" to find a horse in her backyard after her 13-year-old granddaughter ordered it from the internet.  Even though this happened in England, there are still things that I am shocked that you can find on the internet.  What are some of the weirdest things that you have heard people buying on the internet?  I did a quick search of weird things you can buy online and came up with a bunch that I had no idea you could buy from a potato as a card, to a box of poo, to someone to stand in line for you.  I guess that if you have a weird enough idea and willing to post it, there may be a market for it.  If you know anyone who would like to purchase my latest mouth x-rays please let me know I heard that there are people who buy weird things online.

Daily Dose of BS May 11 anniversary

Tomorrow it will be 28 years of being married to Marcia, 28 years, where did the time go?  I have asked people did your life go as you planned?  If someone asked me that same question, I would honestly have to say that my life is better than I thought it would be.  I have super friends, a great family and a fantastic caring and loving wife that supports all my hairbrained ideas.  I always think it is cheesy when people say I married my best friend, sure maybe at the time Marcia was my best friend, but now, not so much.  Now she is much more than that, she is a confidant, my rock, my friend.  When we were dating we often talked about the future, I think that most people do, we often have grand illusions to what we wanted, places we want to go and things we want to achieve.  I want to take my little space here today to thank Marcia for allowing me to spread my wings and fly to where our dreams would take us.  As in every relationship we have had our ups and our downs, and I think if we were really keeping track that there have been more ups than downs.  I also think that we are more than friends, we are partners.  Happy Anniversary Marcia, I love you.

Daily Dose of BS May 10 vacation

As we head into vacation season here is something to consider the number one decision Americans make on vacation, for instance, is getting a divorce, with 31 percent of respondents saying they’d considered the action while away.  I wonder where these people are going on vacation?  I don’t think I have ever thought that even while on vacation.  The second in line was quitting a job (18 percent of people have considered this), now I could see this as a thing especially if you are lying on a beach somewhere enjoying a cocktail at noon while your coworkers are in a meeting.  It may cross peoples mind but who really quits?  A new survey shows that we as Americans are getting better at taking time off on a survey of more than 4,000 American workers about their vacation habits found that American workers took an average of 17.2 vacation days in 2017, an increase of 0.4 days over the previous year, marking the highest level for American vacation usage since 2010.  I am ready for a couple of days off.

Daily Dose of BS May 9 garage sales

Weekends are famous in the Midwest for garage sales, I used to be a big rummage saler, I used to like to pick through someone’s sale tables and try to find the best deal possible, the once in a lifetime find. Those were the days, you used to be able to go to a rummage sale and find some really good deals, now I don’t think as much. Some people who have these sales get an unrealistic value that they place on things based on what I don’t know, but how often have you been to a sale and one of these four things were there, prices so high that you could buy new for cheaper, that the stuff was dirty, or junky or they were selling things like old cool whip and margarine tub and you wondered why they even bothered with the sale. Every once in a while you come across the holy grail of a sale but for the most part at least the ones I have seen lately have been stuff that I would probably just throw away.

Daily Dose of BS May 8 calls

I know I have talked about telemarketing calls in the past but I am getting them in droves now.  Every day my phone rings and every day it is another telemarketer with a bad accent or a robocall or either Janet or Rachel from card services.  The telemarketers are getting smarter and even leaving messages now to give the sales pitch.  I have done my part of getting rid of said calls but that doesn’t mean that the telemarketers are doing what they are supposed to do.  One of the biggest time wasters out there as far as I am concerned is stopping what you are doing grabbing your phone and having it be one of those annoying telemarketers.  What have you done to stop the madness?  I have started blocking certain numbers when I get a call and I have even gone so much as to not answer my phone anymore when I am doing something, I hope that I haven’t lost any business doing so but I hate the annoying sales or not for me calls on my personal cell and my home.

Daily Dose of BS May 7 gardening

A few years ago, I bought my first square foot garden, it came with 8 bags of soil and a road map for success.  I planted the garden as called for with these items in those squares, and these seeds in these squares, only to have some animals swoop in and eat my plants.  I tried it ago only to have my gardening pulverized by heavy rains, and then birds.  I tried one last time and harvested a few tomatoes and a couple of green peppers that first year.  I was hooked.  The next couple of years I made my garden bigger and bigger getting fruit and vegetables.  Last year my haul was fantastic.  This year I got my garden started with 3 different tomatoes, some jalapenos, sugar peas, cucumbers, zucchini, green peppers and this year trying watermelon.  I also have a grape vine, some strawberries, raspberries and blueberry’s.  Not bad for a city kid that only started a few years ago.  I find peace and serenity when I am working on my garden.  What brings you to that point?

Daily Dose of BS May 4 development

For as long as I have lived in La Crosse the Johnson Oil property has always been talked about and has always been an eyesore.  I am not sure how much longer we can call it an eyesore, as the city of La Crosse, has finally chosen a master developer to what I assume to develop that land into something that will include some housing, some businesses, and some recreation areas.  The 65-acre plot is considered one of the last areas in the city for prime development.  I for one will be excited to see what goes in there.

Daily Dose of BS May 3 BSA

The Boy Scouts of America announce a new name change that goes into effect February 2019, after next February the Boy Scouts program will be known as Scouts BSA, reflecting its new membership.  The flagship Boy Scouts of America organization and the Cub Scouts program will keep on with the current names.  The decision to allow girls to join the program is what has prompted the changes.  All the members will now be referred to as Scouts regardless of gender.  As a class of 1986 Eagle Scout I can see both the good and the bad in this.  The good is that it opens up for growth, and will help to fuel what I believe is a dying group of kids who are in Scouts.  But on the other hand, I could see it as a downfall for kids to not have the chance to grow with the help of other young men.  It was a time when we sat around with other young men talked smack and learned to be men.

Daily Dose of BS May 2 Oktoberfest

We have just barely melted off all the snow and already Oktoberfest is making news in La Crosse.  New this year no button needed to attend the yearly drinking fest.  This year the Oktoberfest board has decided to change the game and instead of selling buttons ahead of time for the entrance to the festgrounds, this year’s admittance will be a paper ticket.  Advance four-day tickets featuring the winning design will be available for $10 and they come with a free commemorative button or you can buy single day tickets for 10 dollars with no commemorative button.  I am not going to judge this until I have had the chance to see it in action.  The problem I could see with it, at least for me is losing the pass somewhere or having it go through the wash and have it not be readable, I also think that with the scanning of the tickets it will back up entrance to the festgrounds, but I am going to hold judgment.  Tickets will go on sale in July, with the July sell date, I wonder if they will sell them at RiverFest?

Daily Dose of BS May 1 naming rights

Did you know that the Hubert H Humphry Metro dome in Minneapolis had a name?  I didn’t, it was the Mall of America Field, I wonder if that was good money spent?  I grew up in the cities and I always just called it the dome.  The La Crosse Center is looking at selling the naming rights of the soon to be newly remodeled convention hub of La Crosse.  Again, I wonder if that would-be money well spent, I have been in La Crosse for the past 26 years and I for one have always called it the center, or if on the radio talking about it the La Crosse Center.  I would have a hard time rebranding it in my mind to some different name.  The center is a community building that is owned and run by the city of La Crosse so in essence it does have a paid for name by the group that pays its bills, we as tax payers pay for the center by giving our dollars to the city which in turn pay the bills which in turn has the name of La Crosse on it.  What do you think about renaming the La Crosse Center, would it be a Kaminsky Park – US Cellular Field naming deal?
