Daily Dose of BS Dec 31 resolve

Oh crap! It is the last day of 2013, did I do all that I set out to do this year? NO, I did not. I had one goal this year, it was to be able to run without stopping a mile and a half. I was on track to do it, I got my membership at Anytime Fitness, and was going a couple times a week hitting the treadmill and a month into 2013 I broke my leg, 8 weeks without going to the gym. I attempted to head back, did for awhile but ended up failing my goal. 2014 is a new year and the start of a new slate. I am going to do that mile and a half this year, I am going to start with baby steps and will build slowly to it this year. By end of year I will be successful in my quest. I often don’t make resolutions because I don’t like to do you make resolutions? If so what do you resolve to do in 2014?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 30 vanilla

Baby its cold outside. I very much dislike being cold, which is funny since I wouldn’t give it up for anything. I like having the 4 seasons, I feel sorry for the people who have just one, two or three seasons. Being able to dress for the season is part of the fun, see if you can get it right, if you can properly wear the right amount of layers to not be too cold or too hot. I guess even though I like to try new things I kind of am vanilla. And as I just now came to realization it kind of bugs me that I am but as I look at the choices I have made I kind of am a vanilla person, but I do like sprinkles and other stuff mixed in.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 27 expecting

We are a society of people who expect. When I flush a toilet I expect it to do its job, when I flip on a light I like the light to go on and when you push the button on your remote you expect it to do what it was intended. I expect things like this to work because we took out the human element. It is funny when we turn on the light and it doesn’t work that we are the victims, ever had that happen to you? I was thinking about expecting when I heard the stories of the big delivery guys not getting all the Christmas gift delivered, how is it UPS or Fed Ex’s fault that you didn’t order your item quick enough or that whomever you ordered from didn’t get it out fast enough? Why are you not at least a little responsible for not buying that product locally? From what I heard about this over the past 24 hours that Christmas was ruined because a gift didn’t make it in time-Really? Your whole holiday is based on the arrival of a gift? As I started out saying we are a society of people who expect, and I expect that some will take this wrong and others will blame the President, me I just like when the toilet flushes, and the channels change.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 26 boxing day

They say that you are not supposed to fight when you get together with family yet if you over stay your welcome for Christmas, there it is on the calendar Boxing Day. I don’t know about you but where I grew up if there is a day named after fighting with my brothers I was going to take it and then claim innocence because it’s on the calendar. It would be funny if they renamed it MMA day. I noticed a few trees on the boulevard on the way to work this morning, weird that all the time, effort, energy and cost that goes into Christmas and it is over in moments. The unwrapping of the gifts at the Schmidt house lasted under a half an hour and that was drawing it out. As the whirlwind of activity was happening I was thinking of all that went in to the planning and wrapping. WOW. Besides the few trees I saw on the way to work that got the Christmas stuff put away, I wonder how many people will still have their tree up in March?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 24 Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas. Prior to last year I have always just said Merry Christmas and got upset by those that said anything different. During the past year I have had the chance to talk with many people about this, friends, foes and allies, as well as a few church leaders about the saying of Merry Christmas. Rabbi Saul Prombaum I think said it best, saying that we are all so politically correct these days, that we let the little things bug us, and I agree, we let the little things get under our skin, what one person says or doesn’t say isn’t going to make or break my day or my life and why should I let it. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Seasons Greeting, and here are hopes for a great New Year to all my family, and friends both old and new. May you enjoy the best of days.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 23 prices

Oh goody, gas is up. I saw a 4 cent rise in the price of gas since Saturday. I know 4 cents isn’t going to break us but I was hoping that the drop in the price was going to be a trend. I was wrong. Sometimes admitting that is a tough thing, I am not sure how you are with the w word but admitting that you are wrong is freeing. I got a reminder email from my cell phone company that my bill is due in 5 days, so I logged onto their website to wonder why my auto pay didn’t work, they changed everything and I was behind in my bill. This stinks as I hate being late on any bill. When looking over my cell bill I wonder are there any great inexpensive cell phone services out there? I have been like everyone else where I have become addicted to data and texting, maybe if I were to down grade I could afford a cell service again. The bill I pay for 3 phones is close to 200 dollars per month. With gas up and cell phones up what else could go up, oh yea everything.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 20 tolerance

This is still America right? We have the rights to our opinions, right? Many before us and many after us will be fighting for just that right, the right that we have as Americans to think what we want and have the right to say what we want. With that being said, I think that we are way too politically correct these days, we cave too easily we think that if we don’t that we will tick someone off, we may lose a customer or someone will look down on us. What about the general public and what the general public thinks? Are you going to base your whole business model over one person and one person’s opinion? Isn’t it just that an opinion, I bet that each person coming into contact with my thoughts here today have a difference of opinion than others in your family, your friends, your peers, your political group. This is what is wrong with America we are trying to tell everyone how to think, how to celebrate, how to live. I think that this is BS. I think we all need to be more tolerant on both sides, all sides of each argument, in fact I have been smiling and saying thank you when wished “Happy Holidays”, I wish a Merry Christmas but am doing my part.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 19 what to give

Don’t you hate when you ask what is wanted for Christmas and you get the answer nothing or surprise me. I am going to admit something that everyone that knows me already knows; I am a horrible gift giver. I try to think outside the box and usually end up on the next block, I am a man and I need help. Each and every person I asked what would you like for Christmas, I got the same kind of responses, I don’t know, give me a card, just having you in my life is present enough. Like I believe this, if I as a man do not buy a gift and the right gift, I will be in the preverbal Schmidt house, and I even though I’m a Schmidt it isn’t always pleasant in that house. So I need your help for Christmas ideas, and I need them quick as Christmas is a few days away and the stores are getting busier. And to help my fellow man if asked what would you like for Christmas have at least an idea to share.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 18 santa

A kid sitting on Santa’s lap goes against everything that we teach our kids. The other day I got to help with North Pole duties and saw first-hand how some kids are afraid to go sit on the big guys lap, yet other kids are up and ready for the challenge. We are constantly telling our kids to stay away from strangers yet here we bring our kids to sit on the lap on a big loud man wearing red proclaiming Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas. The thing about being a fly on the wall at the North Pole was that the old school toys were the ones that kids wanted the most, don’t get me wrong there were lots of asks for Xbox 1 and Ipad, but legos and barbies were the most consistently asked for presents, the weirdest ask that I heard was for a pig, cause the kid loved bacon. It is also nice to see that kids still believe and they were there with a smile and I also noticed when Santa said Merry Christmas that kids and the parents smiled and said Merry Christmas back. If you have not been through the Rotary Lights yet this year, bundle up grab some canned goods, and take a stroll through the park to enjoy the sights, the sounds and the atmosphere of the Rotary Lights at Riverside Park- and don’t forget that Santa and the reindeer are there until December 23.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 17 germs

I am not a fan of germs. I have gotten better but I still don’t like to open the door handle of a public restroom without the help of a paper towel. I am a fan of the automatic turn on sink, the hand soap squirt, the auto flush, and the wave at the towel dispenser, dispenser of towels, I do however wish that they would give you a bit more than what most are set at. I have never figured out why public restrooms don’t have swing out push doors, because there are more and more people who like me don’t like to touch the door handle. Which brings me to the antibacterial hand lotion/soap that is out on the market, the stuff that claims to kill 99.9% of all germs, how does it do it by getting the germs drunk? There is so much alcohol in some of those, I get a contact buzz from using them, and don’t get me started on the dried up hands. And now the government is saying that another chemical in the wash is harmful to us. Have you ever thought if the government never told us what was bad for us or not that maybe just maybe we would be a happier people?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 16 security

Last week, World leaders including the President of the United States, and many former Presidents came together for the funeral of Nelson Mandela. By weeks end we heard that the sign language interpreter that was on stage to sign what the speakers had to say was a phony. I have had the chance to meet President Bill Clinton when he was the sitting president and the security around that event was amazing, there were secret service all over, anywhere you looked you saw them from roof tops to in the crowd to the men who were by his side. In fact when I waiting to talk to Mr Clinton I put my hands behind my back and two secret service men moved in behind me closer, I wonder how in the heck a fake interpreter was able to share the stage with so many leaders. Thankfully everything else went off without a hitch, and that no one got hurt.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 13 do we read

Is social media relevant in your life? Do your posts make you who you are? I often wonder if the stuff that I write on fb is actually read to the end or just to the natural break facebook puts in there for the longer posts? I often wonder why some of the stupid cat pictures get shared so many times and the pictures and stories that have meaning often do not. Are we as a society addicted to wanting to know what is going on now and what our neighbors are up to? You may be answering yes in your head that this is the case, but if it was don’t you think that if we really wanted to know what was going on right now in our own backyard, that we would be looking to the local sources? That we wouldn’t be plopping down in front of a monitor either computer or tv but instead would be looking to local radio or local newspaper, or local tv news? I am just wondering if you read this to the end?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 11 snow

Overnight about a half an inch of snow fell. I shovel my walk when we get any amount of snow but I was wondering when other people shovel. There are plenty of sidewalks around that still haven’t been shoveled, and there were businesses that were having their parking lots plowed this morning. When is the right time to shovel the walk or plow the parking lot? I also wonder when the city decides to bring out the plows? There are days that I see plows running on the highways and main streets but in my neighborhood not so much.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 12 sign here

What happened to taking someone at their word? I am not that old and I remember when a handshake was a deal, now a days it seems as though you need to sign over your first born, have a notary public and video proof that you agreed to something. I saw a national news story the other day where a mom, Roxanne Jones who is a founding editor of ESPN The Magazine and a former vice president at ESPN, told her son to get a text to have sex. Her quote was “Never have sex with a girl unless she’s sent you a text that proves that the sexual relationship is consensual beforehand.” Am I out of the loop, is this needed? Are we needing contracts for everything from hooking up to jobs to what’s next a signed contract to have dinner at a restaurant? What happened to assumed liability?

Daily Dose of BS December 10 back from vacation

You have really got to love the first day back to work after vacation. I was up on vacation but not as early as I get up for work, and traveling…don’t get me started. It is always fun being a tourist, my youngest brother Brian turned 40 last week and he lives in Livermore California which is about an hour from San Francisco, we celebrated his birthday in true Schmidt fashion, we ate and drank. I have been out to Northern California a few times in the past and had the chance to mark a few of my bucket list items for there off. I have always wanted to go to Alcatraz, and to In and Out burger. Done and done. I also wanted to hang out with my brother also done. As we were enjoying a few hours of good quality time together we decided that this past weekend was about the only time in our lives that we can remember just the two of us hanging out together without our other brother or someone else tagging along. I am glad I had the chance to really get to know my brother before it is too late.

Daily Dose of BS Dec 3 kids

I think many think that kids have it easy now. I agree that in some ways they do, but in others I am glad I grew up when I did. I don’t think we were as micromanaged as our kids are now. I am as guilty as the next guy, I get my kids involved in things, and sometimes it seems like too many things. For example we have basketball two times a week for practice then weekend games, add CCD to that and school, band and homework, that is a busy kid, and that is only one of them, I have four. When we were kids we took off on our bikes without a helmet mind you played till dark. Rode our bikes behind the mosquito spraying truck, went sledding, wait for the tv dinner to be done by watching threw the glass door, getting up at 6:45 to make sure you had breakfast in you when you set yourself up to watch good cartoons on any given Saturday morning. What memories do you miss from your childhood?

Daily Dose of BS Dec 2 lights

Friday not only brought out the shoppers it also brought out the lights. I am guessing that my house isn’t the only house that decorated for Christmas over the weekend. After watching the lighting of the Rotary Lights the Schmidt house started in the Christmas spirit with getting the tree set up and lights strung. We also got the village set up in the dining room. This year we tried something that we hadn’t done in a while, we strung lights around the back deck and hung lighted wreaths and a brought out the lighted snowman. With the expected snow the next couple days, it will be feeling like Christmas in no time.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 27 black friday

Are you up for the big fake shopping day? I admit I have been up in the past to try to get the best deals, set my alarm and headed to the store on the day after Thanksgiving. I have scored a few deals, that ended up being the same prices that those stores had a couple months later. This year, I am not too sure that I am up for getting up early for the early bird deals, also what is with the name Black Friday, wouldn’t you think that with all the deals that it would be called Green Friday or does the Black refer to getting up extra early? With all the deals being rolled out early this year maybe it should be re-named the “we are taking away your Thanksgiving dinner sale, sales event.”

Daily Dose of BS Nov 26 couple things

I heard this morning on way to work that family sizes are smaller now than before. The average size is now 2.5 my little Schmidt family is more than double that with six of us. There was also a story about superstitions and how most people have them, from not walking under a ladder to tossing salt over the shoulder to not driving forward if a cat crosses the path, to a lucky piece of clothing. I am not sure if I have any but I do know this, most of the trouble I have got in to in my life I have been awake. I figure this will give me a good excuse to nap later. There is no special tie in with my two thoughts today, but if you want to try go ahead.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 22 lots

Great news from my Dad, heard yesterday that the Doctor got all the cancer, he has to go in every few months for checkups but thanks so much for all the prayers. On November 1st, I started on my quest to grow my mustache and only my mustache, I have been letting it do what it does, I am not a hairy person and I think my teenagers have a fuller stash than I. Please consider donating to the Movember.com campaign for men’s health. This morning was the first snow of the season for La Crosse, it is weird to watch people trying to drive again for the first time, like the old Paul Simon song Slip Sliding Away. Drive safe and give yourself the time needed to arrive alive. Also today marks the 50th anniversary of the death of our 35th president JFK, many have said that is the one date that always sticks with them, was that date 50 years ago a bigger event than September 11th?

Really he forgot???

The mayor of a town in Utah will keep his job for another two years after "forgetting" to inform residents that it was time to hold municipal elections. Wallsburg, Utah's four city council members will also be reappointed by default after the screw-up that is being blamed on a city employee in charge of election oversight.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 21 football players

There are certain risks with every job right? When you work as a professional football player you would think that you would know that you are getting beat up every week by a brick wall. The men of the NFL are huge muscle bound guys whose job it is, is to stop you, by using their bodies. When you run at another man at great speeds and they are running at you at great speed, you are going to crash. As an NFL player you get paid a great wage, a wage that most of us only dream of. As a practice squad player the minimum is 6k a week and as a one year NFL player the salary is over 400 thousand dollars. With men the size of trucks running at you, you are going to get hurt. I have an issue with the players who are going after the teams and the NFL because they suffered this that or the other. They knew the risks and got paid handsomely. I have tinnitus which is ringing of my ears, I’m guessing from headphones too high early in radio career. Does this give me a right to go back and sue former employers? Is the paper cut that you got at work last week going to get you paid? With a job there are risks.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 20 advice

Best advice ever? Try hard, don’t look back, look to the future, but don’t wish your life away, DREAM. I have been having lots of heart to heart talks with my 18 year old son. You know as a Dad you can learn a lot by just listening, but sometimes I have a hard time turning off my interview mode from work, where I have to keep conversations going, I sometimes get accused of grilling him and the other kids. My response is if you answered in more than just one word answers or grunts conversations would be just that a conversation. What are some of the gems you got from your parents when they thought you weren’t listening? I always remember don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty cause you can always wash them.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 19 deer camp

I don’t care if you hunt or not, you should have on your bucket list to go to deer camp. You should also allow your children to attend if they have never been. I love venison and like a lot of other wild game. I however do not like to hunt. But I have gone to deer camp at least the past 15 years and I have brought my kids up with it. My buddies are all hunters, they live and breathe this time of the year. My two older boys love the hunt, and this year will mark the first year that my youngest son is going to be in the woods armed, and one of my friends will be mentoring him on the safety and finesse of the hunt. The reason everyone needs to go to deer camp is the camaraderie that goes with a camp. I have been bringing my kids for many years so that they can see how friends react around each other, see that it is about working together, it’s about telling tall tales, and it’s about the love of outdoors. What is your deer camp story?

Thieves take note:

Your days of stealing baby Jesus from your town's nativity scene are coming to an end. Makers of nativity scene characters say they're getting more requests each year for GPS-equipped baby Jesuses, Marys, Josephs, Three Wise Men and nativity animals.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 18 sounds

If you live in La Crosse Wisconsin and were home on Friday night, did you hear the booms? What the heck where those? It is funny how different noises bring up different feelings isn’t it? When the Blue Angels were practicing through the area a few years ago the sounds of the planes flying over our community at first was kind of cool, but if you had to hear that noise all the time it would drive you nuts. During duck season if you live where the ducks are you are going to hear the pop of a shot gun. By a railroad track you will hear the hum of a train going down the track and occasionally you will hear the blowing of a horn. When I first moved to La Crosse I lived by a fire station, I got used to the lights and sirens and when I first bought my house I missed it. It is a funny thing about noise and sounds when they are first around they are shocking then they become just another part of life and just back ground.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 15 Happy Birthday Twins

Today my twins are 12 hard to believe that they are already 12. Happy birthday to Robert and Kenedi, it is funny when we found out we were having twins and that they were going to be a girl and a boy we had to come up with names. I wanted to name my other boys after my Dad and wanted to call them Robert the 3rd and was always shot down so didn’t even think about it for the twins, my wife always wanted the name Kenedi so our girls name is Kenedi and since I was always shot down with wanting to name my sons Robert I suggested Lincoln, needless to say I lost that one also but won as well cause we do have a Robert. It is funny to think that two babies spending 9 months together and living in the same house have such different personalities. I am glad. Did I mention that when I was dating my wife that she wanted to have twins. I always wanted to be retired and rich by 50. At least one of us got our wish. Happy Birthday Robert and Kenedi, I love you.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 13 prostate cancer

Today my Dad has prostate cancer surgery. Please say a prayer for him. I am driving our new family car today as I am heading to my Dads home to the Twin Cities after I get off the air to visit with my family, and the car has amazing the bells and whistles, that I am not used to. I am used to adjusting the seat by hand, and turning on lights, also used to turning around to check behind me, with this vehicle you don’t need to do any of those things. It has electronic seats, the lights go on when you start the car and there is a camera that shows all behind you. It came with satellite radio, but being a radio person I don’t know if I will play around with that on my drive. I also got Onstar, which I may try cause I have to find a hospital I am not familiar with. As I mentioned at the beginning please say a prayer or at least give some positive thoughts for my Dad.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 12 wasted food

I hate to waste. I took out a tube of hamburger yesterday afternoon and forgot it on the counter when I went to bed last night. Five pounds of burger wasted. Thank goodness that this doesn’t happen too often but I had planned on making chili for dinner this afternoon and was going to brown the burger and save some for a later day. I know I should have put the burger in the fridge to thaw but I really don’t like to wait. I guess when they say patience is a virtue there is a method to it. I also dislike when other food gets tossed because of improper putting away like bread, or fruits of veggies. I searched for food wasted on google and it says that about twenty five percent of our food budget is tossed away every year. For a family of six they say the average food bill per week is $291 so about 15 thousand dollars per year. Wasting about 4 grand per year on throw away. It just hurts to think that, that much is wasted.

Miley at it again.

Miley Cyrus twerked and toked at the European version of MTV's VMAs -- puffing a fat joint on live TV Sunday night while accepting the award for Best Video.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 11 Veterans Day

Thank you. If you are a Veteran or if you are currently serving thank you from the bottom of my heart. If it wasn’t for all the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to service in the armed forces we would not be able to do what we do. I have heard stories from my Dad and other friends who had served in Vietnam about how they were spit on and called names when they returned from their posts. For that I am saddened. I like the way we as Americans now thank our service men and women for their service. I have also heard of people buying dinner or a drink for the service man or women who is at a restaurant in uniform. For those who are selfless and offer up years of their lives so that we may be free I thank you, and for those families who have been affected by your loved ones serving I thank you as well. God Bless America.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 6 medians

What is it with all the medians that are ending up in La Crosse? First there was the one in front of Kwik Trip on Losey Boulevard, now they just finished adding one to Jackson Street in front of Viterbo University. I for one am getting confused with it. I also do not like the speed bumps that have been added to roads and the round abouts don’t even get me started. Oh and I noticed a new road painted sign the triangles right before the cross walk, are they there as arrows to point where the cross walk is? Because we can’t see a glowing rectangle painted on the road.

The cost of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving dinner will cost a little more this year. Agricultural experts say the cost of a meal for ten adults will run $50.01 -- about $3 more than last year. That price includes turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, rolls, peas, cranberries, a carrot and celery tray, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream for dessert.

Daily Dose of BS Nov 5 doggie cpap

If you read my daily posts please give me a like. My dog slept in my room last night, usually he sleeps in with the kids, but for some reason we won the dog lottery last night. I know I am a loud sleeper, I used to toss and I turn, snore and stop breathing, I have sleep apnea, and for that I wear a cpap machine. The cpap has saved my life, with it, I sleep like a baby, and no that doesn’t mean up crying every hour or two. I really sleep through the night. With the dog on the floor at the foot of the bed, it brought something new, I think my dog has a snoring issue, in fact I know he does. Since when does a dog sound like a freight train? I kept expecting to see train lights and was ready for the horn to blow. I just think the dog needs to blow his nose, or maybe a doggie cpap machine. Either that or he needs to sleep in with the kids.

Daily Dose of BS take responsibility for your actions

Who is to blame for the shooting at the Los Angeles Airport? I think we need to stop looking at finding someone to blame and blame the shooter. The man who brought a gun to the airport and shot and killed people should be to blame not anyone else. Why is it when there is a tragedy that we feel like we need to blame someone other than the person or persons involved? If you get caught speeding is it the fault of the builder of the road because if they hadn’t built the road to handle the speed, or the maker of the radar device that clocked you at that speed, or better yet the police officer that was doing their job? No it is the fault of the person doing the crime, unless of course we can find a way to pin it on the time change. We need to man up and quit pointing fingers and take responsibility for our own actions.

Daily Dose of BS November 1 movember

I hate cancer. This year my family got hit with the big C in multiple ways, from my Mom and Dad, to my Father in law, to a sister in law with a huge cyst removed, to many friends with bumps and lumps. Today is the first day of November and I am not going to shave for the month. This past week I have had fun with my facial hair from the “General Burnside” to the Charlie Chan and a few in between. This will be the first Movember that I will take part in. Movember encourages men to join the movement by growing a stashe for 30 days. I will be posting pictures of the growth of my stashe on facebook and trying to raise some funds for the “Movember Vision” which is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. I am growing my mustache for my Dad. If you would like to donate to help the cause, or if you would like to follow my facial hair growth please check out my personal movember page http://us.movember.com/mospace/7687581.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 31 alternate side parking

I hope you enjoyed where you parked last night. It was the last night of parking without alternate side parking until April 1st you have 151 days to try to get it right. I like to look at it like a game you can’t win. I am lucky enough to have off street parking but my son isn’t as lucky. Sometimes he can park behind the house but for the most part it is street parking for him. Looks like the rates have gone up also, for your first and second violation its 10 bucks for violations three- five it is 20 dollars and if you have 6 or more it is going to cost you 40 bucks each and that is if you pay on time. Lets say that you leave your car in front of your house just for principle sake you can cut the amount of days to 75. If you decide to not move your car and just pay the fines, it will cost you $2,880 if you pay each within the 10 day grace period. If you wait on top of that, it is going to keep doubling each 10 days. Remind me again what this money goes to.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 30 end daylight savings time

It is time to do away with the time switch. I have been beating this drum for many, many years and I think we should get rid of daylight savings time, we should switch it this Sunday at 2am and never touch it again. We should go to standard time and call it good. There are lights that are highly efficient now and we can light everything up with leds and other lights that do not use much power. I have heard the arguments of what about people who work during the day? They are missing out on daylight. I say that is what weekends are for, or get a job with a different schedule, or better yet deal with it. What about us that wake up at 4am so now when the clock goes back on Saturday I will really be up at 3? Then in a few months when my old body gets used to the time switch, it will switch back. We need to stop the madness.

Quit Smoking today.....even though most people think about it on Monday.

If you are thinking of quitting smoking, it is probably Monday Researchers monitored Google searches for five years and almost every week, searches about kicking the habit peaked on Mondays.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 29 70mph

All I can say is it is about time. People have been crawling through Wisconsin at a snails pace since all the states around us raised the speed limit. The state is talking about raising the speed limit to 70 and I will say it again it is about time. They say time is money right and you will never ever get more of it, cause there is always something sucking out time right away from us, why not save a few minutes on our trip so we can have more time at grandmas, or on vacation. Since they are looking at raising the speed limits I hope that they also start looking at the idiots who are driving under the speed limit in the passing lanes, or the person who holds up traffic.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 28 technology

I think we are owned by technology. Try going a day using old technology from a few upgrades ago. I was thinking about this over the weekend when I had some problems with my 4 wheeler while I was in Wonewoc Wisconsin, for a get ready for the big deer hunt at a buddies parents. My 4 wheeler quit working so I brought it to a small engine repair shop in town, he told me the part I needed, I headed back to home base and was taken back to old school internet where the “high speed” internet was just internet. I sat for hours waiting for the page to even load, ok it was seconds but felt like hours. Maybe it isn’t the upgraded technology but what the technology has brought to us quicker that has pushed our patience to low levels.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 25 see it say it

I have big shoulders, you have an issue please talk to me, don’t go to someone else and say something to them. Address it head on. I think this is the problem with society, no one wants to say something to anyone because they are afraid of stepping on toes, or hurt feelings. If I am involved in something please talk to me, as I hate having someone else come up to me and say someone has an issue with this that or the other thing. It kind of gives me a feeling like when my kids come up to me and ask me to have their brother stop doing something, man up and face your fears, you might even like it. As they say, grab the bull by the horns, and then my friend hang on for the ride.

Scary Food

Daily Dose of BS October 24 healthcare.gov

Turn your head and cough, and cough and cough. We have just over a couple of months to head to healthcare.gov website to sign up for insurance if you don’t have it. We saw the government launch a website for sign up and on the same day we saw the government shut down. The insurance is supposed to be in place to fix you when you are sick, who is going to fix the government? The shutdown ended a week ago and we are still seeing issues with the healthcare.gov website, who is going to fix it. Also do you think it is a good idea for the government to step in and tell you that you need insurance?

Daily Dose of BS Oct 23 staycation

We work hard and some play hard. As the seasons are changing I am reminded of the fun things to do in our own back yard. A staycation if you will. I love where I live and love to play here as well. From Ice Fishing to Rotary Lights, to Skiing at Mt La Crosse and cross country skiing at Hixon Forest, don’t forget about hiking and snowmobiling as well. We have State Parks within an hour of here and one of my favorite things to look at right across the river with the ice chunks that hang from the bluffs in La Crescent. So many things to do in our area and so little time. What is your favorite thing to do here?

Daily Dose of BS October 22 save money

So am I the only one who gets irritated when I open up a webpage to see a list of lets say 50 things and have each of those items as their own separate page? While researching this Daily Dose of BS I wanted to have a bunch of things to talk about for saving money. From the common like turning off the lights when you leave a room to “visualize the” why you are buying a product. And give yourself 10 seconds to decide if it is really something that you need. I think we are all good at buying products but are we good at using the stuff we buy? If you are like me you have a drawer full of stuff that you bought cause you thought you needed it and there it sits in the package until it either expires or the technology becomes obsolete. I am guessing that you have done that on more than one occasion. Another tip for saving money is to get rid of magazine subscriptions that you don’t keep up on. I used to have time to sit and read a handful of different magazines, now I don’t have the time and this is a good way to save about 100 bucks a year, it doesn’t sound like much but it is a good night out. Saving money on the products you buy doesn’t have to be hard. Just look around.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 21 soup

Making soup is different now than it was even a few years ago. I turned on my heat on Friday night the first time this year, my house was cold. I kind of do heat like I do the crock pot, I set it and forget it. I usually put the heat at 68 or 69 degrees and let it sit there. About 12 years ago we insulated the house, got new windows and got a new more efficient furnace. At the same time we cut our heating bills in half. Yesterday I was glad the heat was on, after spending the morning and afternoon putting in a garage door, I was cold. The kids wanted soup, since it was so cold I did as well. Back when I first started cooking it was open a can of campbells add water cook. I then learned how to cook, I made the broth, added the meat and veggies, it was a labor of love, and it showed. The soup was delicious. Fast forward to about 3 years ago when the dried soups came into vogue, now homemade taste is just a few minutes away. Last night I made the chicken wild rice soup mix but then I added leftover chicken, rice and veggies. You still can’t beat homemade soup but adding to the mix is better than canned.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 18 expired food

The other day while looking for something for lunch I spotted the container of potato salad. Mmm I love potato salad. How often is it when you spot that extra piece for lunch or a bit of leftover for dinner that you notice it is just past the due date? I was bummed that here was a brand new potato salad container that had not been opened yet and had a date that was 2 weeks old. I know that we toss more food at our house because it either expires because of date of because it has been opened. I am usually good at eating leftover in fact I often plan for them so I have something for lunch, but get disappointed when we have to waste food. Is my family the only family with the two week past the due date food? Some things I will push the date on, but others not so much.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 17 snuggle house

I’m a hugger. I enjoy a good hug. I also like to cuddle, there is a job out there in Madison for those of us that like to hug, cuddle, and snuggle. The Snuggle House in Madison offers professional cuddling and snuggling, officially opened its doors Tuesday. So what does it cost for a snuggle at the Snuggle House? Customers pay $60 for a single snuggle, $120 for a double-cuddle and $425 for an overnight session, and it is a snuggle house only, no funny business. Wait how can they say no funny business, I find it funny that someone pays to hug, cuddle and snuggle. I’ll hug ya for free.

ADDICTED TO OREOS? YOU MIGHT BE

Oreos are as addictive as cocaine, at least for lab rats, and just like us, they like the creamy center best. Researchers (at Connecticut College) found eating the sugary treats activates more neurons in the brain's "pleasure center" than drugs such as cocaine.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 16 flu shot

Today I am getting my flu shot. By the time that this is played on the radio for the first time, I will have got my flu shot. I have heard both sides of the story about why not to get the shot etc, but I work in the public and see lots of people and shake lots of hands, and I mean I do shake hands none of the fist bump BS. I also have kids and talk for a living so getting influenza is out of the question for me. Lots of people think if I get the flu shot will get the flu, or you won’t get stomachaches or headaches. Its not the case, you won’t get the flu, and you may still get head and stomachaches. The flu shot will help you from getting influenza which is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. It spreads easily and the Flu symptoms usually start quickly. The first symptom of the flu is a fever but can include: Body aches, Chills, Dry cough, Increased breathing symptoms and much more. I would get you the info from the CDC website but the government is shut down, and apparently passing on information is non-essential.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 15 texting and driving

Here we go again. Another reminder of people breaking the law. Heard a report that 80% of college students are texting and driving and about 50% of adults are also. I have to admit that I sometimes do too. I won’t for the most part but every once in a while I will speak to my text to talk to send off a quick message. I will also occasionally when at a stoplight glance at my phone to check what is going on. I have tried to put it away and not text, but sometimes the draw to know what is going on in the inner circle is too much the draw. I have a friend who traded in his semi smart phone for an old school phone to get rid of the temptation. You used to only see young people glancing down at their crotch and smiling but now you are seeing lots of people doing so, I even saw a senior citizen looking down and laughing the other day, but maybe they were happy it was just a fart.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 14 life

Who has time to listen to secret meanings on songs and listen to songs backwards? I have a hard enough time listening to some music forward let alone backward. Why is it that many look for something that isn’t there from life to music to satisfaction at home, work, school you name it. Life is too short to do the things you hate doing. I got some family news last week that puts life into perspective and you know something life is too short. We spend far too much time finding the bad in things, the stuff that we want to put up or dukes over, ready to throw down at any time. I think we should work for peace and work for unity instead of trying to tear down each other. We all have those friends that when you say up they say down. Why do we put up with this?

Daily Dose of BS Oct 11 I got nothing

I usually have a hundred things flying around in my head on a regular basis. Today, I got nothing. As a person who is in a creative line of work and usually observant is quietly stewing in a mass mush of nothing. I thought if I started to type that something will come to me but still I got nothing. If you have any ideas on what I could talk about today, please help, ideas are always welcome, my worry is what will I talk about on the radio and can I bs about nothing for an hour? If you would like to help, please call this morning 608-782-2554. Thank you.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 10 gas prices

Not quite 3 for 10. Gas prices are down a bit and the prices are a bit misrepresented, here is what I mean the price you see in red neon is 3.33 per gallon. What we are really paying is 3.339 per gallon or 10.017 dollars for ten gallons of gas. I know that many of the gas stations have the penny jar there, so you could sneak that extra .017 out of the price but simple math in my head tells me I get 3 gallons for 10 bucks. It is a sad day when I drive by my local gas station and see that price and think to myself look at that gas is cheap. When did I become that guy to think that 3.339 is a cheap price, it is not. I think at this point I would be happy with 4 gallons for 10 bucks or 2.499 per gallon...or cheaper.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 9 stop bullying

October is anti-bullying month. I think we have all experienced bullying in some form or another, what starts sometimes as good natured ribbing can turn into the worst experience to that point for a kid and can be a stressor for that child. We all give our siblings and our friends a hard time, but once in a while that hard time keeps up and the line gets crossed, that is when it is considered bullying, we picture the bully to be the hard ass kid from down the street, but in fact it can be anyone from a brother and sister, to your parents, to friends, family, teachers and bosses. Here is how to define bullying its Intentional- aggressive and a deliberate attempt to hurt another person, it is repeated- over time to the same person or group of people and there is a power imbalance- the person bullying has more physical or social power than the child or children being bullied. Lets stop the bullying.

Anti-Bullying Day October 9

I had a chance to talk with La Crescent student Max Merrill a few months ago, Max started his own clothing line he calls MeInfinity, which is meant to remind people to be who they are forever. Tomorrow is Anti-Bullying Day.  It reminded me of Max and what he has overcome.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 8 day 8

Is your job essential? I’m not sure mine is. In fact I know mine is not. I have few friends who are being affected because of the shut down. We are in day 8 right now and enough is enough. If the government truly wants to make a difference instead of a point have the whole government shutdown. I am guessing that that will not happen cause the man never goes without. Could you imagine the people in congress or the senate say no to a pay check? There may be a few out there who will as a gesture give it up but really? It isn’t affecting them anyway it is cutting to the core the backbone, the people who are in the trenches and are busting their hump for the man. Lets put politics aside and unite as a country and put these people back to work. The gesture is there we “shutdown” the government now lets show the world that America is open for business.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 7 nothing on tv

Bruce Springsteen had it right back in 1992 he sang about our unhappiness with life. Think about it his song 57 Channels and Nothing on, if you think about it, it could have multiple meanings from us being unhappy with our lives even though we have everything we could want. And our constant quest for more, and still not being happy. To the obvious choice of all the tv that is out there. I think it is odd that we keep getting more channels and more choices but none of them are getting better. We do have over 57 channels are are still struggling to find something to watch. I am thinking of pulling the plug on cable tv since we only have the basic 2-20 channels now no extra sports, no extra news, no movies, still too many channels of nothing on. Have you pulled the plug, and if so how did you survive the nagging from the kids?

Daily Dose of BS Oct 4 reduce reuse recycle

We have heard of reduce, recycle, reuse. I have been good about the repurposing of products, getting most of the supplies for finishing off the family cabin from places like the restore. I am a frugal man so the reuse comes easy but the reduce I have not been very successful at that, we still have at least a bag of garbage a day. I am going to have to learn how to reduce my garbage because of the new rules that go into effect at the first of the year. I have heard from friends who have moved here from other communities that this new system will be “awesome” I guess we will have to wait and see.

BS SIGNS YOU’RE HAVING A BAD DAY:

-Your blind date turns out to be your ex.

-Your boss tells you not to bother taking off your coat.

-The pest exterminator crawls under your house and never comes out.

-The plumber floats by on your kitchen table.

-Your new lover tells you last night was terrific and you were home by yourself.

-The Department of Biological Warfare has asked for your stew recipe.

-You see your financial adviser hitchhiking out of town.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 3 4 years and a day

Yesterday was my 4 year anniversary for getting laid off.  With that being said, I am happy to be where I am.  On Monday I was finally able to close the door on the feeling I was festering for the past four years.  I finally forgave and let the feelings of anger go.  I am in a much better place for me.  Thank you for all my friends who stood by me and were there for me when I needed to talk, and thanks for La Crosse Radio for taking a chance on me.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 2 no labels

Not sure if this is possible or even probable but to me it makes sense. Why not take away the labels? I know there are die hard Democrats and die hard Republicans, why not take the names away and vote on the person and what they believe in? This way we are voting in the best person, not the person having the label we like the best? It is so funny to me that we are all quick to jump down someone's throat for labeling someone different than us something, but here we are labeling each other and labeling our politics. I have voted for people from each party, I vote more for the way I feel a person will govern our great country, rather than a label that was thrust upon that politician. SO if we throw away the parties and let the politicians wear their colors on their sleeves I am guessing that we could all reach across the political aisle and be friends with and agree with each other more. I am also guessing that there are lots of people who agree with a thing or two about what this that or the other politician believe but are afraid to look because of the label.

BS SIGNS YOU HIRED THE WRONG BABYSITTER ON THE WEEKEND:

-Asked for payment in advance in order to put a deposit on a keg.

-Carried the baby by sinking her teeth into the scruff of its neck.

-As you were leaving, asked if you happen to know the country code for Australia.

-Had her boyfriend move hidden ‘nanny cam’ to your nightstand to better capture the show

-Offered to throw in a circumcision for an extra 10 bucks.

Daily Dose of BS Oct 1 government shut down

The start of the month and the government has shut down. This is real great on our already struggling economy. Who is to blame? Who is going to be impacted the most? I am mad that this has had to happen, why play politics with peoples livelihood? We will all most likely feel the effects, from food safety and health to work safety. A few years ago in Minnesota they had a government shutdown while we were traveling and the beautiful state parks were all closed with today's shut down all national parks, and the Smithsonian Museums, are closed . Talk about a disappointment. Talking about disappointments we will still have to pay our taxes.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 30 oktoberfest

Oktoberfest in La Crosse, what a wonderful time of the year. It is fun until someone gets an eye poked out or car tipped over. What the hell? Why is it that people have to over consume so much that they feel it is ok to tip over a car, or do some other act of destruction? I had a job in Iowa when I first started in radio and one of my buddies tried talking me into cow tipping, after visiting a farm, I realized that this was an impossible task. I watched in amazement this weekend as many not only college aged students over indulged but as many of my peers did as well. In carpooling to get kids from this parade spot to the other and back home again, I noticed so many killing brain cells. I am not saying that I have never done this because I have, but I have never been part of a mob scene that ruined someone elses fun or property. I hope that the La Crosse Police finds, and then makes an example of these idiots, also that it these are students who are attending one of the higher education facilities in La Crosse, that the school also comes down on them. If you do the crime, you should be held responsible for the punishment.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 27 oktoberfest

The day you have been waiting for since last October is finally here. The tapping of the golden keg. I have been enjoying Oktoberfest for the past 21 years and there is a lot to enjoy. I moved here right after the beer throwing ended, I am glad for that because I couldn’t see wasting that much beer. Over one hundred thousand people line the streets of La Crosse for Mapleleaf Parade. It is the great La Crosse Get Together. What is your favorite part of fest? This year I am looking forward to hanging out with friends on Monday night for the Bret Michaels concert. Also remember when someone this weekend says ei ei ei o to you respond with Old Mcdonald has a farm.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 26 Christmas before Halloween

It is not even Halloween and already we are seeing signs of Christmas. What the heck? I am wondering why we are seeing this holiday creep into our sights earlier and earlier each year? Last week Kmart started with Christmas and other stores are following. A few years ago we went from bah humbug I am not saying Merry Christmas to anyone because of the fear of upsetting someone to now already displaying Christmas in September. I don’t understand what was the cause of the change? Are we seeing God sneak into our lives? Oh no what will we do? Are the people who hate Christmas going to not shop at these stores or is it a conspiracy for all of us to be so unsensitized to Christmas and everything to do with Christmas that we start to not pay attention to it? If you know please explain cause I am at a loss. Ho Ho Ho happy Oktoberfest.

A butter dance to Adele

One of the weirdest things I have seen.
A butter dance?????what the heck?

Butter dance

Daily Dose of BS Sept 25 sex

Sex sells. Not the act but the promise of being sexy. Why else would a chainsaw company put out a girly calendar, or would commercials use pretty people. There was an uproar a month ago about little Hannah Montana going over board. Guess what there is nothing real about Hannah Montana, she is Miley Cyrus and she wants to sell records. I get it, be absurd or controversial you will get people to talk about you. Be over the top people will remember you. Remember that guy who liked peanut butter and nanna sandwiches? What about those long hair rockers from Liverpool from the 60’s? They both pushed the buttons with what? Sex. For one gyrating hips, the others long hair and being different. Pushing the buttons and the norms of the time. For Miley Cyrus and the next generation of pop keep pushing. For the rest of us when it is over the top stop looking or reacting, it will go away once there is no waves or anyone talking about it.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 24 saving money

When it comes to saving money. Where do you save it? Are you a coupon shopper, do you wait until what you are looking for is on sale, are you a second hand shopper? Do you hit up the dollar store, or reuse bread bags? It is funny to see the different ways that people save money. I have watched the extreme coupon shows on Netflix and thought there is no way I would do that. I do however clip coupons, from the grocery store deals that are in the Sunday paper to the flyers that are also there. I have not printed off too many coupons off the internet. I was grocery shopping the other day and got stuck behind an extreme couponer and they saved about 50% of their bill. I still don’t think that they needed a case of air fresheners, who will ever even use that many? Dollar stores can save you money and so can shopping clubs but you have to watch what you buy. Do you think it is better to buy an inexpensive something and replace it every year or spend more and replace less often?

Daily Dose of BS Sept 23 stealing food

I think there are people scamming the system. There is no way that everyone who is on food stamps needs them. I heard on the radio last week that one in seven Americans are on food stamps, I have a hard time believing that everyone who is receiving this benefit is in need of it . If you need food stamps, great you should get them, but if you are scamming the system, shame on you. I am bugged that people get in the system and then work under the table so that way they do not need to get out of the system. We are in a world of financial hurt as a country and people lying, and cheating and stealing from the government are adding to this problem. When I say there are people lying, cheating and stealing from the government, I am not only talking about food stamp fraud but now other frauds as well, shame on the businesses who charge governmental agencies more than they charge other businesses. Remember when you are scamming and cheating the government you are stealing from all of us including your Mom.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 20 running

No land speed records were set. Not a one. I work with Lois and she was telling me how she ran for a mile and a half without stopping. I am proud of her, this is my goal this year. I had the goal of doing two pull ups by the time my 25th class reunion, that didn’t happen, not for lack of trying. I then had the brilliant idea of learning to jog, a big guy running cue the evil laugh. I did a couch to 5k last year, and I tell you what I was as close to a couch you could get. I was winded just walking and the thought of a 5k, wow don’t get me started on what went through my mind for that. Well I did it and did a few 5ks last year more walk than run but they were finished. I had the goal in 2013 to run a mile and a half without stopping, well having Lois do it earlier this week is pushing me toward my goal, Yesterday at Anytime Fitness I ran .7 miles without stopping, and like I said no land speed records were in harm of falling, I am a step closer to my goal this year of going a mile and a half without stopping.

Would you eat this?

Gross? Kinda makes me wanna puke a bit.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 19 cookies

When I say cookies lots of you will think of the things that are attached to our computers that make our computer do and think things, right? I love cookies and not the kind that I just explained but a Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie that is made with real butter and is a little crispy. I really dislike when someone makes chocolate chip cookie bars, they just don’t taste the same. And don’t try messing with the toll house recipe. I am also a fan of monster cookies and m&m cookies, but not the fake m&m cookies that are out there, why bother when it comes to the fake ones. It’s funny when I started writing this I was just going to talk about cookies I now feel compelled to also let you know I also like the edge piece and corner piece of brownies and I am a fan of ice cream. And you wondered why I am so sweet.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 18 garbage

We all make garbage. At my house it seems like we end up with more throw away than we do anything else. It is amazing that when you go to make a meal you end up with more stuff for the landfill than you do on the table, why is this? My big concern is that the city is now going to dictate how much trash I can generate at my household. I have six that live under my roof and I am going to get the same garbage container as my neighbor who has herself and no one else. I don’t get it. Also we are going to be required to sort our garbage a bit better than we are used to, like save our plastics number 1-7 what about 8 and above, they aren’t good enough? Also if the recycling is offsetting the cost of the bins, what about the pickers who are going through your trash taking out the metal for scrap and the aluminum cans to recycle on their own.

Daily Dose of BS September 17 save our Library

Come on LaCrosse...We have lots of bars and new ones opening every year. We have 3 libraries in town, the Main, the North Side and the South Side branch, and you want to close the South Side library? Really? To save 160,000 dollars a year? I bought my house in that neighborhood because of that library. I am not sure what you are thinking. You close that library and you wreck the neighborhood. I will start looking for a new house, I bet others do as well. There are people in and out of that building everyday. Libraries are used differently now than when I was a kid, now the library is as a meeting place, a place to take a class, a safe sanctuary, a quiet place to escape the daily grind, a place to live and a place to learn. Oh yea you can get questions answered there, go online, read a book, a magazine or a newspaper, you can learn a new skill, or be read to. Do not close our library, if you are looking for a budget to cut, look else where.

Daily Dose of BS September 16 new car smell

WTH?  When did cars become as expensive as my first house?  We are looking at a new to us car and I can not believe it.  We are looking for something that will move all six of us from here to there and back again, but not a mini-van.  Not sure why we need something new but, that is another story.  When it comes to buying a new or used vehicle what are some of the things I should keep in mind?  I am not a car guy, really I know how to put in gas, check the oil, and put air in my tires, that is it.  I am not sure that all the bells and whistles are needed, I would like power windows, air conditioning and cruise control and a radio that gets am.  I would like to get good gas mileage and want it in my budget, any ideas what to look for?  Any ideas on where to go?  Anything I should steer clear of?

Daily Dose of BS Sept 13 you are not always right

I hate to say it you are not always right. I know it is hard to hear but you can be wrong sometime. I also have to admit that I am not always right. I think that we feel as we get older that it is our why or the highway, and guess what that is not the fact. We can be wrong, deal with it. I post here on facebook just about every weekday that I am working, and I read every single comment that someone posts to my writings. I really do appreciate every single one of them, even the ones that I don't agree with, before yesterday have never edited or took off any comment that anyone has made, on or about my posts, because it is a free country and we have freedom of speech. However a few of the comments yesterday were mean, with name calling and finger pointing, I took those off. I write my Daily Dose each morning as a journal of what I am thinking of for the moment and I put these up to create a vehicle for thought, and always enjoy a bit of feedback, but life is too damn short for us to name call, and bully.

Daily Dose of BS Sept 12 health screening

I had a health assessment today.  I had to fast for 12 hours before I did it, they draw blood, they take your blood pressure and ask you some questions.  I am assuming that after the Affordable Health Care act goes into effect I will no longer have to do this.  When I set it up I asked for the earliest time they had, they said the nurses were there as early as 5am I said sold.  Otherwise I would have to do my show without coffee, and that wouldn’t be good for anyone.    It is good to talk with other morning people.  Most the time I am up early I am at work, fishing or hunting and when fishing and hunting most of my friends are not morning people, so talking with someone this morning other than the grunt of a buddy or a mumble from a family member, it was welcome.  If you are a morning person and like to talk early, I suggest calling a morning talk show, like mine (608) 782-2554.  Talk to you on the radio.

Daily Dose of BS September 11

Today marks the 12th anniversary of an emotional day for many of us as Americans, I recall being on the air and having someone call and say a plane flew into the World Trade Center. The studio had a black and white tv so we turned it on, it was a punch to the gut,  shock and awe was the feeling, here a turning point in American history was playing out live on TV.  I recall picking up my son from school and trying to figure out how to talk to him about what had just happened.  I can still picture the images of the planes hitting the world trade centers over and over again.  I had just been in Boston two weeks prior and thinking and saying out loud that there is no security here.  The days, weeks, and even months after this tragedy we as Americans pulled together.  We flew our flags high, we said hello to our neighbors and held the door for others around us, we were actually polite to each other.  Why does it take a kick in the pants to have this happen, we pulled together again after the Boston Marathon too.  Why can't we just like and respect our neighbors all the time, Instead of after- life- altering events?

twerk fail....fake

Daily Dose of BS Sept 10 death

When the end is near it is hard for all loved ones.  I don’t know if you can ever plan for that day when you don’t have that someone there be it a spouse, a child, a parent, a grandparent, a friend, a boyfriend or a girlfriend.  We all have to deal with loss at some point in our lives.  It is different to see different people deal with loss in their own ways.  How do you deal with the loss of a loved one’s life?  When the end is near for a loved one how do you cope?  What do you say?  How do you comfort?

Daily Dose of BS Sept 9

Should we go to war with Syria? Congress reconvenes today and will be voting whether or not to have a military strike on Syria. US Secretary of State John Kerry now says there is the support of at least ten countries on taking "limited" military action, my biggest question is what is limited military action? Don’t we fight to win? I don’t think that any people of the world should have to be in fear of poison gas attacks like those that happed in Damascus at the end of August. But I also don’t know at what level of assistance we as a country should offer, don’t other people in the world hate us because we jump in the middle of things?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 30 country going to pot

Yesterday was a special day.  I am blessed to have as many friends as I do, thanks to all who made my birthday special.  I woke this morning to a story that made me feel as though I was still asleep, the Justice Department said yesterday that states can let people use marijuana, allow people to grow it and even allow states to allow adults to buy it as long as its kept away from kids.  I am not sure how I feel about this.  Marijuana is considered the gateway drug personally I think of tobacco as the gateway drug, but that is a whole other story.  I think that legalizing pot will bring some of the drug dealers down and bring in millions of tax dollars to the government, and any tax cut would be welcome.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 28 smoking

Tomorrow will be 6 years since I smoked a cigarette.  I had been a smoker on and off from the time I was in high school till 6 years ago, I quit for 4 and 5 years in there at different times but 6 years ago I decided after my oldest son caught me smoking to give it up for a year.  I gave it to myself for my birthday, it was a one year contract that I had with myself.  I then continued to give myself that gift.  That time I quit was easy, as I was doing it for my kids and for me.  Don’t get me wrong there were times when I really wanted to light up, especially when faced with stress, but each day it got a bit easier and the cravings less.  Which brings me to the e-cigarettes that are now seemly everywhere, is that just trading one habit for another habit?  Are the people who are “smoking” these doing good for themselves?  I have a friend who used them for awhile to try to quit, it didn’t work he smoked both the e and regular cigarette now just the regular.  I am now hearing that these are causing cancer similar to regular cigarettes.  I am also bugged by the fact that users of these feel like they can do it anywhere, like the grocery store.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 27 parade

Would you pay 35 bucks to reserve a prime parade viewing spot?  The city of La Crosse is considering a new and different approach to the squatting problem along the Mapleleaf Parade route.  Up to 55 prime parade watching spots could be available for “rent” for the parade.   The city is thinking of issuing $35 street privilege permits to keep people off the streets till the parade starts.  I think this is ridiculous, isn’t this just another tax?  My goodness we already have hoops to jump through in order to watch the parade from a prime spot by having someone stake out the area starting at midnight, now we have to pay for the “privilege” of doing it, no thank you.  Unless this is how they are going to let the parade go on without fees to Oktoberfest.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 26 rape

She deserved it, do you see what she is wearing.  She is asking for it, I’ve heard the stories.  I got needs.  I’m a man.  She flirted with me I could tell she wanted it.  She didn’t say stop, I heard don’t stop.  Her friends said she likes me.  You can’t rape the willing.  Come on MAN UP.  It makes me sick that a sexual assault happens every 2 minutes in this country.  Every two minutes.  We are the land of the free, the home of the brave.  I see nothing brave about forcing yourself on to someone.  Remember NO means NO.   It is about respect and not just for your partner but for yourself as well.  Here’s the thing 54% of all sexual assaults go unreported, if we want to see that number change, start reporting.  I am a Dad, a Son, a Husband and a friend to many women and I do not want to see this go on.  Let’s put a stop to sexual violence.

WHO EATS THE MOST FAST FOOD?

Some surprising highlights of a new Gallup poll on the topic

80% of us eat some type of fast food monthly almost 50% weekly.

57% of young adults aged 18-to-29 indulge weekly, the highest frequency of any age group.

51% who earn $75,000-plus annually are more likely to eat fast food weekly, in comparison to just 39% who earn less than $20,000 a year.

Only 4% of us claim to NEVER eat at fast-food restaurants....I am not one of them.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 23 forget

There are times that I am in the middle of conversation and forget what I am talking about.  Sometimes I think is there a better way to get somewhere that I go to regularly, there are times that I am thinking of a number between 1 and 10 and when I am asked what the number is I lie because I don’t remember.  But then there are times that my memory is so good that I remember things that haven’t even happened.  I am not sure if these are the signs of old age or because there are always 37 things going through my head at a time.  Sometimes it is so crowed up there that the less important things get pushed out or taken to the slower part of the brain.  Most days at work I give the weather forecast 20 times in a day and then someone will ask me after work what is the weather going to be tomorrow and I give them a blank stare and ask why would I know, the response is always don’t forget the milk.

Daily Dose of BS August 22 ahh um

Today I got nothing.  I am surprised by this as there is always something swimming around in my head.  I was thinking on my way into work this morning about how many times we say um in a day.  I am guessing if you work at Subway you hear it more than the average person.  Try to order a custom made sandwich or a built for you burrito from a made to order place without saying the word um.  I bet ya can't do it.  I tried the last time I ordered and was unable to do it and I mentioned it out loud to the person working, they laughed and said they didn’t notice.  I bet they do now.  I had the chance to meet President Bill Clinton right after the Monica story broke, he spoke in La Crosse and about 15 of us got to meet him and ask questions, being me I asked how do you speak without saying ahh, or um?  He looked me right in the eye and with my best Bill Clinton impersonation said ahh, um…

Daily Dose of BS August 21 speed limit

We all are in a hurry, if you are driving through Wisconsin, slow down.  Most the states around here have a higher than us speed limit, and I hope ours increases soon.   I remember when the slogans arrive alive drive 55 was out, and then we moved it up to 60 and 65.  While driving to visit my folks in the Twin Cities you get to drive legally 70, but if you go only 70 you will be passed.  The state of Wisconsin is now looking at moving the speed limit up to 70 from 65, I personally think we should move it to 75 or even 80, people are driving it anyway, and why not have a little truth in signage?

BS TRUTHS ABOUT KIDS

If you have trouble getting your kids attention, just sit down and look comfortable.
One child is often not enough, but 2 children can be far too many.
Summer vacation is a time when parents realize that teachers are grossly underpaid.
There are 3 ways to get things done - do it yourself, hire someone to do it, and forbid your kids to do it.
A child will not spill on a dirty floor.
The best thing to spend on your children is time.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 20 bored killing

Heard on the radio this morning that three teens shot and killed someone cause they were bored.  Where did the respect for life go?  We killed him because we were bored.  The boys were aged 15, 16 and 17.  I am appalled by this and I think the biggest reason is that there is total disregard for life, secondly I have kids that are close in age to those kids.  How can you be bored?  There are so many things to do from reading a book, to hiking in the woods, to hanging around the mall or playing games, either video or good old fashioned board games.  I do not get the mentality of people who for no reason cause damage to someone else’s stuff, steal from others or take the most precious gift of all life.  Here is an idea if you are bored find something to do.

Daily Dose of BS August 19 marriage

My buddy got married on Saturday and most of our card/hunting group was there, I got into a conversation with one of my buddies on why marriages now a days seem to end more often in divorce, great topic at a wedding right.  He gave me his thoughts on the reason, and for me it makes sense.   We are now waiting to be married and we live together before we are hitched, in waiting we are getting more set in our ways becoming more independent than we were in the past.  We are forgetting about compromise that makes any relationship work, lets say you are an over the top toilet paper person and your spouse is not, bam a fight, you roll your tooth paste from the bottom and he squeezes it from the middle bam a fight.  No compromise.  This works at work also, the people you fight with at work or in other relationships are people who won't compromise with you but one of you ends up backing down and a good foundation of relationship can't be built on that, can it?

BS BALD GUY PICKUP LINES

You’re beautiful, and that’s not just the Rogaine talking.
I will shower you with gifts with the money I save not buying shampoo.
Would you like to run your fingers through my head?
Your eyes are sparkling … or maybe that’s just the glare off my head.
I don’t have any paper, but you can write your phone number on my extensive forehead.
Wanna go back to my place and see my hairpiece?
There are 2 things missing from my life: Healthy follicle growth and you.
Wanna buff me?

Daily Dose of BS Aug 16 don't judge me

I am a big guy, I know that people look at me and think, lazy.  I think that we as a society tend to judge people on their outward appearance.  I don’t know if I am judgmental or if I just am noticing things and either like or don’t like based on what it is that I see.  Yesterday I spent the day at the Wisconsin Dells and you could not have asked for a better day.  I made many observations and want to share a couple of them, first of all why would you go to a water park dressed up in your Goth stuff, (A) it’s a water park you are going to get sun and (B) it’s a water park and you’re going to get wet.  If you are wearing pants over your underpants, why if you are allowing your whole underwear to show, I saw no less than three young men wearing their pants so low, with a belt mind you that they had to walk doing the splits to keep the pants up.  I guess I am glad that under garments were worn.  There were belly button rings, and pierced chests, and I saw lots of cool ink, some really bad ink and a fake tramp stamp that ran.  I guess when you boil it all down it is your canvas to do what you want, but there are lots of artists out there that even their Mom won't hang the art on the fridge.

Daily Dose of BS August 14 computer crapped out

What a craptastic start to the day.  I started off my morning routine then headed to the office to go through emails and check my facebook.  Went to turn on my desktop computer and nothing, the display said primary master drive error hit control, alt and delete.  It went through that twice, then came to the display of reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media.  Well the quick look through the drawer of computer stuff, I found some 5 inch floppys and 3.5 inch floppys some windows 98 and xp start up discs, guess what no windows 7 Asus start up discs.  Uggh what do I do, my business is run from that computer, I have tons of pictures, audio, and memories on that computer.  In fact thinking about it I am starting to get antsy and irritable, any help would be appreciated.

Daily Dose of BS Aug 13 open package

You would think that as a business you would want consumers to try and enjoy your products.  We bought some of the snack packs of the oatmeal squares to go, and they were definitely to go.  Go back to the kitchen to get a scissors to cut the thing open.  It is a nice looking snack pack that stands up by itself, the top of the pack says push down and pull apart, I don’t know what Herculean person can open this package by pushing down and pulling apart but it should be an Olympic sport that is how difficult this task is.  Which brings me to other quick grab and go snacks from chips to bagged lettuce and carrots who designed these tear here strips and what is the success rate?  One in 1,456?

Daily Dose off BS Aug 12 messy desk

We have all heard that cleanliness, after all, is next to godliness.  Boy was I in trouble before researchers at the University of Minnesota decided to take a look at this, you know keep your work area clean and you will be more likely to work your tail off, stay honest, be generous with your coworkers, and on and on.  They found that all the clutter may be part of the reason that we are so creative, so lets grab a coffee stained mug filled with your favorite caffeine and toast the slob next to you.  Remember the old saying "If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"  it seems as though a messy work environment, can bring out a person's creativity and lead to the birth of bold, new ideas, this new research makes me happy.  Now if I could only find my stained coffee mug to make that toast.
